KEY. A. WALLACE, Editor. OOEAN GROVE, N. J., SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 26, 1881. VOL. VII. NO, 48 The End of tho W ay. My life is'a wearlaomo journey; I'm slok with tbo dost and tho beat; The rays of the son beat upon mo; Tho briar* arc wounding m y feet- But the city to which I Am tfavollBg Will more than m y trial* repay; All the tolla of the road w ill seem nothin* . When I get to tho end of tho way. There arc so m any hills to clim b upward, I often am longing for.rest; But He who appoints me my pathway Knowajuat what is aeodtvl ar.d beat I hnovy in Hia Word He has pronilsed That my strength shall Wo aa my day; And tho tolls of tho road will aecm nothing TV h en I get to the end of the way. Ho loves mo too well to torsako mo. Or give mo one trial too u u c h ; ; ; All His peoplo have been dearly purchased. And Satan can no*er claim such, By and by I ahall seo Him and pralao Him In tbo city of unending day; And tho tolla ofthe road will seem nothing When I get to the end of tho way. When the last feeble step 'ins been taken, And tho gatea ot the city appear, And tbe beautiful songs of tho angels Float out on my listening ear:( When ail that now B^etais ao'mysterious Will bo pl^ln and clear aa the 'day— Yea, tho tolla of tho road w ill aoem nothing When I get to tho end of tho way. Though now I am footsore and weary, I shall rest when I’m safely at homo; I know I’ll receive a glad welcome. For the Saviour Himself baa said Come.'- Bo, when 1 am weary In body And sinking in upltlt, i Bay: MAll the tolli> of tbo road will seem nothing When I get lo tbo end of ihe way.” Cooling fountains aro there for the weary; Thero are cordials for thoso who aro faint; Thoro aro robes that aro wi»i(ar and purer Than any that fancy can paint, Then I’ll try to press hopelutly onward. Thinking often throogh cach weary day? “The tolls of tho road wllUecm nothing: When 1 get to the end of the way." Praiso and Prayer, Thore ie no duty moro plainly laid down in the Bible than that of prayer, (See 2 Cron. 8 :1 4 , Matt. 6 V 9, Matt. 7 : 7, Luke 18 .1 , Phil. 4 :6, Col. 4 : 2, 1 T im . 2 :1.) In view of these and like passages it ia strange how an inteliv gent person, like Harriet Martineaii could make the statement, “ The prac- tice of prayer is wholly unauthorized in . the New Testament” I t shows a greater bigotry than evor existed in the ChurcV and a bigotry much lees excusabie. But th6re is another duty just aa plainly required which Christians are in danger of neglecting an d of not fully appreciating; I speak ol praise.' There is more praising than praying in the Bible ,• there is more Baid about praise than about prayer; praise is com- manded more frequently . than is p ray or; thoro ore n.ore. examples of , praise than of prayer and we receive a great many more blessings without prayer than wo do with prayer. Thtso facts do not belittle prayer, but they do emphasize the duty of praise. We are commanded to “ Pray without ceasing,” and in the B»me sentence are also di- rected, “ In everything give thanks”—1 that is, praise. Thus our minds, our souls, our mouths, our actions, are to bo full of praise to God for everything thatcomea to us. Not only are’we to pray, but'wo are also to praise. The ^jower of praise is’similar to the power of prayer. It is the means of bringing blessings to us. Thia is taught in PdA\m 17: h, 6: “ Let the peoplo praise thoe, 0 God ; let all people praieo thee.. Then bhall the earth yiold her increase ; and God, even our God, shall bless lis.” And it will be■found ; that blessings will sometimes bo received iri answer to praise, which have not been secured in answer to prayer, ** It shall often hap- pen, when the heart is’torpid and yields • ’not to the actions of prayer, it shall be- ?gln to thaw ahd 'at last1 burst like streams under the breath of spring from its icy prison, with the warm and genial excercise of praise. The dead . ness, the distractions thou deplorest shall flee’away as the* harp is taken down from the willow and strurig to celebrate the divino perfections.” .. N o t •only will praise havo this effect on a torpid heart, but it wH! Bometimes drive away the clouds o f sadness aw’d sorrow, when prayer has failed to do it. Praise will Bometimes bring light.out of darkness when prayer does not. When prayer has failed to1 give ua the vic- tory over the enemy praise may do it. In the year 420 the Britons m et the army of their onomiea with a united shout, three fcimea; of the word1 Alleluia 1 Tlie unusual sound cauBod tfiem "to b’d ■struok with terror and they fled; before the-Britons. / MAy wo u’ot > 0xpoct - as ‘good iri jotir ‘'litful '.’w&fiHre rftbha the use of praise? *■ wheri prayercim- i= not unlock heavon, praise often doe* it," Thus we see that praise is » means of grace just as much ns ia prayer. And thus it becomes true that “ tho happiest, holiest, arid most useful Christians, those most heavenly in their disposition arid state, are thoao who praise God most find best.” Letua learn then from this, not to pray any less, but to praiae a great deal more, that we may have all the' benefits coming . from a combina - tion of praiso and prayer.—Northern. PrwidcncBS. It has been Baid by one ofthe fathers of the Church, that whoever is careful to mark special providences will nevor be w ithout special providences to m ark, But it may bs asked, what do wo mean by providences ? Are not all God’s doings such ? H o sees and orders the end from the beginning, and takes caro of all that he has made. Is there anything that nan occur that is not a providence, permitted or brought to pass by the Great Ruler of all? N o ; nothing ia wanting irithis defini- tion except that which gives it its life, its practical appropriation by each otiis of ua to ourselves. • The question is very much like that asked of old, “Who is my neighbor?" and can be perhaps beat anewered iis that was, by appealing to tbo practical experiences of our lives. Can we help anyone ? He ia our neigh- bor, Do wo from day to day tread an uncertain path, events meeting ua that wo cannot ourselves control, and caus- ing us to feel how much we need a help beyond our own ? Then is the time to ask and look for God’s special provi dence; and is not this tim o almost every moment of our liveB? W e have beer, led to theso thoughts by, the experiences of tho Summer just, ■passed.. Leigh Richmond gives tho following excellont advice to his daughters : “ Be cheerful, but no gigglers. B e seriouis, but not dull. Be communicative,’ hut not.forward. Be kind, but not servile. Beware of silly, thoughtless speeches; although you may. forget them, others will not. Remember, God's eye ia in every eompauy. Beware of Isjyity and familiarity with young men ; a modest reserve, without affectation, ia the only safe path Court and encourage con- versation with those who are truly Beri- oub arid eonvereible; do not go into valuable company withoui endeavoring to improve hy the intercourse permitted to you. Nothing is more iJnbeconiingy when one part of » company is engaged in profitable coversation, than that an- other should be trifling, giggling, and talking comparative nonsense to each other." 'Fam ily Troubles. Was there ever a farriily without its troubles? Adam and Eve had their, troubles in Eden ; and all families have had their troubles. Every family has a skeleton behind the door; every peraon: has a tborn in his side. I t is aiiitf thnt misery loves company, so take courage, belpieas man, wearied woman. You; are in the majority. ‘‘Man ia born unto trouble as the sparks fly upward.” A useless fa m ily would yours bo if it knew no trouble. Trouble is our great teacher, It nerves us with strength ; it gives us courage; tempera our metal ; develops our self control; it ,'juickcnii our inventive powers. Troubles are to us what the winds are to the oiik—what labor ia to tho muscle—'what study is to tho mind Life ls a achool. and trouble i« one o f. the- great lossona, Troubles are not to be courted; but when they cotric wo must get ovor them the be way we can, or bear thetu with the bent fortitude we can arouao. Take courage, therefore, troubled on®. N o t iri'Vain fere your trials.' Th e y iftakei you bravei'stiorig,' aiid it is tobo fi6^od, 'What W ill He Become ? Tbo question is often asked by pa- rents in regard to their eons, and by the friends of. many young men; and,'al- though there is no definite rule for ascertaining, we m ay get some idea of what a young man will become by ob- serving hia actions and worda, Solomon says that “ even fi child S b known by hia work, whether it bo good or evil.” Therefore, when you see a boy slow to go to school, indifferent about learning, and glad of every opportunity to neglect hiB lessons, you may take it for granted that ho will bea blockhead. When you seo a boy anxious to spend m oney, and who spends every cent soon os he gets it, you may know that ne will be ft spendthrift, Whonyou see a boy hoarding up his pennies, and un- willing to part with them, for any good purpose, you may sot it down that he will bo a miser. Whori you aoe a boy willing, to taste Btrong drink, you may rightly BUppose that be will finally become it drunkard. W hen a boy ® disrespectful to liia pa- rents, disobedient to . his teacher, and unkind to his friends and playmates, it ib a sign that he will never bq of much nccouut. When you see a boy looking out for! himself and unwilling to share good thinga with others, it is a sign that he will grow up a aelfnh man. N e x t Sabbath's Lesson. Our lesson is called The Serpent in tho Wilderness.’ Serpents are gener- ally something wa all want to run away from ; but thia ono was a serpent all wanted to see. We know how long the Children of Israel wandered in the wil- derness. Thoy might have roacheri- Catiaan long years before, but because they emne<i God punished them byj keeping them away so long. ^ A t last they came near, and wanted; to go through a land called Ed o m . This the people oi Edom would not allow, ao they uad to march around it. They were very tired, and so anxious tp reach their promteod homo that they t-egiivto' find fault with Moaei, Fault finding is a sjaan pin, for is al ways sees something wrong when there is really no wrong at all. Fault-finding never helpa, but only makes things harder. Tney found fault, tuvl at last even found fault with' God, They found fault even with tho manna, God’s bread from heaven. For this God punished then;. Fiery aer pents bit tho peoplo; and they died. At iiist thoy wore sorry, and eame to Moses to oak God to take the serpouts away. God told Moses lo m aku a brass serpen and raise it on a pole in the centre of the catatp. Then all tfho were bitten neckled only to look up to'tUe brass ser- pent and they would live. We are all like those wicked people. W o are bitten by tho aerpont, sin, and unless cured, must die. W h o can cure ub ? Can you not aing, The QreAt Phynfclan now la near, Thofcymp&tblziog Jesus?" W e need only look to the cross, only tall Jesus we.are sorry, and he will hear and bea) os. Jesus was lifted up, that all tho world might be saved. .When things seen) hard, don’t fret arid complain, or you may end in find- ing f.iult with God.: W e can't know just ’why everything is, but we cap know this, God always does right, and he will surely do all things beat for those who lovo him . Depravity. Brethren, sin stains our piety and pollutes our devotion. W e do not even pray without needing to ask God to for* give the prayer. Our acte of faith have a measure of. unbelief; in- them , for the, faith is never ao strong as it ought to be. Our penitential tears have some grit of impenitence in theih,.arid our heiiyenly aspirations have a measure of carnality to degrade them. The evil of ouk nature clingeth to all that we do. W e have been once washed in the blood of Jeaus, and we are cl3an before the bar of God; . Thanks^ving—Tho First and Last. BY MRS. 8, A. CEAMER. Perhapa the grea’.oat cauae we havo to-day for gratitude ia. that aB a people we fully realize the fitness and prppri ety of a day of thanksgiving. It augura well for the present soundness and fu- ture Safety of a nation aa busy as ours, so fond of nioney^malting and monay- getting, when it fa. willing to take a 'day out ofthe bUBji year, in which to render unto G ckI that which is hin.juat due; that from the rising to the going down of the sun, the whirr of machinery and the sound of the hammer is hushed, and the great mill-wheel stands still, the places of trade are closed, and over all the Republio brooda tho peace of a Sab- bath ailenco, broken only by the chimtjs of church-going belln, . If ever a nation had cause for joy and gratitude to tho Giver of all good, then aurely we have; for never »aa there a land so blest, unless it m ight have been Canaan in the days when Israel was in favor with God. A country so rich iu all that conduces to ihe comfort, happiness and well-be - ing of ils citizens,- and so boundless in its material wealth that we have bread to spare for all the needy nations of tho earth. But there nevor was anything groat, and good; and valuable yet that baa not somewhere and at sometime cost something. A n d this rich heritage of ours was bought with a. price—a sum we scarce can estimate in wordB, mat’e up of privation and an (rering, eacrifice and self-denial, the, lives of noble meri,i and tho tears of orphans and '*idowa.' ' Among the.- first instalments upon this m ighty aggregate waa that paid by the Pilgrim Fathers. When scorned, despised and persecutetl 'by the haughty adherents of the Church of England,' arid farced by the . unjust decrees of Jam es 1. against all dissenters to aaek a home in tho new western world beyond the seas, did it not cost them a pang to look lor the laat time upon their native land? To turn forever away from ita stately homes, its green meadows and thrifty fields, to feol themBelves forever exiled from its shores, henceforth to have no more .part or parcel in tho in-' terests of that great kingdom of which Englishmen were and are ao justly proud, waa indeed a great sorrow ; but: maybe thoy had suffered too much! within its realm* to waste sentiment; upon' leaving it, and we can imagine them turning theij faces resolutely to- wards tbe setting sun, where henceforth their destinies lay. What . a dreary prospect wa<i theira when, after a long, and dangerous voyage, they sighted the: ariow-clad shores nf Cape Cod Bay! Midwinter in a strange, ties? world : no. friendly greeting to welcomo them to its untried shores—only. the .howls of wolves in the'unbroken forest, and wild yells and a ahower of -arrows from the still more aavags Indians. This was their first reception. Did thoy quail in the face of it and look back 1 No I - " They afeook the depth-* ->ntie desert’a gloom With the!- hyiii: - of lufty cneer: Amldnttho storm U>«f inxtg, And Uitt»ta.rK htard. and tho s c , And ifiesoandlog ai.M of ihe dim woods rsiig To the aiuheios of tho freo.” They were free at laat. Privation, want, and even death might be'their lot, but henceforth they were.free From the iron rule ,of kings. ■: It was after the gathering o f their first harvest, tho product of seed saved, from their scanty atores. tbsitadt.y oftlvinim giving'was appoiuted-«-tae firat ever ob served in America. To-duy we observe tho 260th ! How great the contrast be- tween them. 411 around the firat set- tlers lay an unexplored arid unbroken forest, in whoseahadow lurked a stealthy foe; and the sea eang a sad requiem to tbe memory of their dead, whose now- made graves had hallowed the-soil of New England before the plowshare had stirred it. “ In tho dark’nlng wood. Amid thp cno’ and silence rhey knelt down Aud ofliTPd to the Mightiest solemn thanks And supplication.” To-day we, their descendants, sit in the midst of the accumulated blessings of all the years between the two dates, 1621 and 1881. Surely the prophecy of Joel concerning Israel has been verified in this land and people (Joel 2 : 21-r26). God hns been pleased to prosper us in a most bignal manner. The *ailh of our t commerce whiten the navigable waters of every part of the globe, and otir flag is respected among all the nations of tho earth ; yea,' our very existence is a menace to. the oppressor, nnd a beacon light to the. oppressed. Through our open doors on the east tho, unhappy of every clime have sought u home. The tramp, tramp of the incoming hosts echo ail along the years of the centuries past, and still they come, high and low, rich and poor, good and bad. From . snowy Siberia and the frozen steppes of Ru ain, from sunny Italy and vine- clad France, from ice:bound Scandina- via and ihe heather hills of Scotland, from home loving Germany, and. last, but not leii8t, fro m .<-green Erin the gem." And to-day their voices help to swell the song of gratitude over all onr happy land. Whittiar’s ISsminiEconcets. The following letter was written by John G. W hittier to a child in Penn- sylvania who asked him how he spent his days ih boyhood: A mesduby , Mass., Sept, 17,1831. My Dear Yottng Friend:—! think, at the age of which thy note inquires, I found about equal satisfaction in our old rural home, with the shifting pano- rama of the Beajous, in reading the few books within m y reach, and drooming of something wonderful , and grand— aomething iu the future. Neither change n o r lose had then made me realize tbe uncertainly of all earthly things. I felt secure in my mother's lovo, hnd dreamed of losing nothing and gaining much. Looking back now, m y chief satisfaction iat that I loved and obeyed my parents, I tritd to make them happy by trying to bo good. That .1 did not succeod in all respeols, that I fell very far short o f m y good intentions, was iv, frequent cause, of sorrow. I liad, at that tim e, a very great thirst for knowledge and littlo means to gratify it.
