K. A. NIZAMI CENTRE FOR QURANIC STUDIES

Professor K. A. Nizami (1925-97) was associated with the Aligarh Muslim

University for nearly four decades. He joined the University in 1947 and served as

Professor and Chairman of the Department of History; Provost of Sir Syed Hall;

Dean, Faculty of Social Sciences; Dean Students Welfare; Director Sir Syed

Academy, Pro-Vice Chancellor and Vice Chancellor. He also served as India's

Ambassador to Syria. Professor Nizami was a prolific writer who authored more

than 50 books on different aspects of Indo-Muslim history and on Sir Syed's vision

and contribution to nation building.

The K. A. Nizami Centre for Quranic Stuides at the Aligarh Muslim University

promotes the study of the Quran and Quranic sciences.

Within the University, it provides a forum for scholars whose academic interests focus

on any aspect of the study of the Quran. Students from faculties of Social Science, Arts,

Theology, Business Management, Engineering, Law, Agricultural Sciences,

Commerce and Life Sciences have taken admission in the Centre. It caters the needs of

University students and others interested in the study of the Quran.

At the national level, the Centre is developing links with other institutions of Islamic

learning in India. At the international level, it is forging cooperative links with

individuals and institutions world-wide.

The Centre's Management Committee is chaired by the Vice-Chancellor and the

Director of the Centre is its Secretary and Convener (Executive Ordinances Chapter

XXXVIII). It consists of distinguished scholars from within the University and

beyond.

INTRODUCTION

The Centre is committed to the advancement of academic excellence in teaching,

research and publication. Its outreach activities promote a more informed understanding

of Islamic culture and civilization.

The Centre contributes to the Aligarh Muslim University's mission of promoting the

educational advancement of Indian Muslims by:

Promoting the study of the Quran and arranging instruction in Muslim

theology, religion and culture;

Promoting the study of Indo-Muslim civilization and culture;

Nurturing links with other centres of Islamic learning in India and abroad;

Cooperating with other universities in such a manner and for such purposes

as may be consistent with its objectives.

SCOPE

The Centre's objectives are:

To provide instruction in reading the Quran(nazira), recitation of the

Quran(tajwid) and memorization of the Quran(hifz)

To promote research in the field of Quranic exegesis(tafsir), particularly with

regard to the commentaries written in India

To give instruction in the art of Islamic calligraphy

To provide facilities for display of Quranic manuscripts and rare books

To maintain a specialized collection of books on Quranic sciences , Islam, and

areas relevant to the academic interests of the late Professor K. A. Nizami

To maintain language laboratory

To hold seminars, symposia, conferences, exhibitions and lectures

To encourage the study of Islamic jurisprudence, Islamic finance, and such other

areas as may be consistent with the broad purposes of the Centre and the wishes

of the benefactors

OBJECTIVES

1. Diploma in Quranic Studies (Course Code: DPQS)

This course is designed for the young and educated Muslim youth with no or little access

to the original sources of Quranic Studies. It offers an introduction to the traditional as

well as modern topics of the sciences of the Quran that includes morals and values of the

Holy Quran, Quranic Recitation, Quran and Science and Quranic Studies through ICT.

2. Diploma in Calligraphy & Graphic Design (Course Code: DPCG)

This course is designed to impart training in the traditional art of Islamic Calligraphy and

covers manual as well as modern Computer Calligraphy. It is aimed at giving the young

aspirants knowledge of rich tradition of Islamic Calligraphy in India and other cultural

centers of the Islamic world.

3. Certificate in Tajwid (Course Code: CERT)

This course, designed for beginners, enables them to recite the Qur'an with the correct

pronunciation (makhraj). Students learn the alphabet and basic rules of recitation of the

Qur'an (tajwid).

COURSES

4. Certificate in Qirat (Course Code: CERQ)

This course is designed for those who can recite the Qur'an fluently and wish to be

trained in qira'at (principles and etiquettes of Qur'anic recitation). Students learn

primary and secondary qualities of the Arabic letters, their correct pronunciation, and

the rules of waqf.

5. Certificate in Learning Quran (Language Lab) (Course Code: CELL)

This course is designed for teaching Qur'an using ICT and software such as Snetclass.

6. Certificate in Quranic Arabic (Course Code: CEQA)

This course is designed to teach Qur'anic Arabic to students who are non-Arabic

speakers.

7. Certificate in Introduction to Quranic Sciences (Course Code: CEQS)

Introduction to the context of revelation helps develop a better and fuller

understanding of the Qur'an.

The building of the Centre has been designed by the world renowned architect, Professor

Abdel Wahid Al Wakil, recipient of the Aga Khan Award for architecture.

The architectural and construction costs have been met from private donations. The

building houses the offices of the Director, teaching staff and visiting fellows; class

rooms, conference room; display area; library; language laboratory and a mosque.

Three big classrooms and four tutorial rooms are available for teaching. One classroom is

exclusively for girl students. All classrooms are equipped with modern ICT facilities.

An air-conditioned conference room provides a pleasant venue for conferences and

seminars. It is equipped with good audio-visual facilities.

The Centre also maintains an air-conditioned mosque which is available for the daily

congregational prayers and tarawih during Ramadan.

This is to be a modern State of the art facility with provisions for safety, security, light

and biological decay protection to display rare and precious Quranic manuscripts.

The Language laboratory provides facilities for reading and reciting the Quran with correct

intonation using appropriate software. It is equipped with master console and student

consoles, interfacing and head-sets, microphones and Snetclass software. Internet facility

is also available. For the benefit of students of Centre softwares like Al-Misbah, Kelk,

CorelDraw 16, Inpage and Mudarris are installed in the language lab.

The Centre's library caters for the both teaching and research. It has a growing collection of

books related to different aspects of the Quranic sciences. All books are online catalogued.

The Centre was formally inaugurated by Dr. M. Hamid Ansari, Vice President of India on th

24 September, 2012.

Two Lectures on “Personality Development” by Mr. Matloob M. Khan (formerly

General Manager, Birla Renusagar Power Division and Chief Consultant NAASH Group

of Industries, UAE) were organized for the benefit of staff and students of the Centre on

11-12 March, 2014.

A three day Islamic Calligraphy and Graphic Design Exhibition was organized in

collaboration with Siasat Art Gallery, Hyderabad on 19-21 March, 2014.
