CCS Information Literacy Standards

The school library media specialist works collaboratively with the entire learning community to

promote literacy. Literacy is the ability to read, write, comprehend, and communicate. For the twenty-

first century learner, literacy extends beyond the functional skills of reading, writing, speaking, and

listening to include visual, media, and information literacies. These new literacies focus on an

individual’s capacity to use and make critical judgments about the information they encounter on a

daily basis. (1)

1. Literacy

a. Students appreciate literature and other creative expressions of information.

b. Students strive for excellence in information seeking and knowledge generation.

2. Social, Ethical, and Human Issues

a. Students practice responsible use of materials, technology systems, information,

software, and facilities.

b. Students understand the human, cultural, and societal issues related to technology and

information.

c. Students develop positive attitudes toward technology uses that support lifelong

learning, collaboration, personal pursuits, and productivity.

d. Students recognize the importance of information to a democratic society.

e. Students practice ethical and legal behavior in regard to information and information

K-5 Information Literacy Curriculum Overview

The information literacy curriculum has been designed to support the Michigan

Grade Level Content Expectations (GLCEs), National Educational Technology Standards

(NETS) for Students, as well as the classroom teacher. As research indicates, schools

with a strong library media program, taught by a certified school library media teacher,

helps to increase student achievement. Collaboration is also encouraged between teachers

and media specialists to further enhance this learning experience for students. The

responsibility of the media specialist during instructional time is to complement, extend,

and reinforce classroom content and state curriculum requirements. The following pages

outline the information literacy scope and sequence designed by the CCS K-5 media

specialists. Listed below are the grade level programs and responsibilities:

CCS Guidelines for Information Literacy Curriculum

Grades 6 – 12

Teaching students the research process and technology applications is highly valued

by teachers, administrators, and parents as important preparation for academic

success, both in secondary school and in college. The Michigan Department of

Education Content Expectations and other MDE documents, such as the Writing

Across the Curriculum guides, call for inquiry-based projects. Library media centers

provide quality books to read because students who read well are higher achieving

students and are more successful in their careers.

1. Information literacy (inquiry) and technology applications are taught through

collaboration between the library media specialist and the classroom teacher.

2. All core classes include inquiry-based projects and the use of technology

applications , through which the CCS Information Literacy/Technology

Curriculum Grades 6 – 12 is taught, as identified on the CCS Information Literacy

Scope and Sequence.

3. Each CHS, CJHS, and SMS media specialist aligns each core curriculum with the

CCS Information Literacy Scope and Sequence. The media specialists work with

teachers to identify the skills that best match the core curriculum for integration

into that curriculum, based upon MDE documents and guidelines.

4. The Big6 research process, an inquiry approach, is taught in grades 6 – 12 as an

example of one approach to conducting scholarly research.

5. The technology applications are integrated into the classroom curriculum through

project collaboration. Examples of these applications are word processing (ex.

Word), spreadsheets (Ex. Excel), presentation (ex. Power Point, MovieMaker),

publication (ex. Serif PagePlus), podcasting (ex. Audacity), digital photography

(ex. Microsoft PhotoEditor), use of the online catalog, Internet use and safety,

database searching, and using EBooks, per the CCS Information Literacy Scope

and Sequence.

6. CCS students in Grades 6 – 12 read for enjoyment and understanding.

CCS provides students with library media centers that offer quality, relevant

literature, intended to increase their reading comprehension, vocabulary, and

overall ability to read.

7. CCS provides students in grades 6 – 12 with library media centers that offer a

wide variety of quality information to support research projects in the curriculum

areas, as well as to pursue personal interests. Quality information is defined as

authored, edited, published material that is accurate, current, relevant, and

comprehensive, in both print and electronic formats.
