What Djarrgun College achieved with JTSWe performed stories written
by the students, relevant to
their social issues and gave
them a voice, sometimes not
acknowledged or heard inside
the school system.
Team story-telling was highly
successful and they found a real
respect for each others work.
Pulling apart their text really
helped the students
understand the construct of
story and how to build a more
powerful piece of writing for
performance.
Behaviour differs to all other
classroom settings and they
were focused on being heard.
The pedagogy for teaching
confidence in performance is
very specific and uplifting,
which is an essential experience
needed for these kids often.

Shame is a huge hurdle for many to
overcome for successful
participation. Much of the lesson is
taken up with tardiness but we
challenged this and started to see
results in breaking that pattern
with more self pride experiences..
We worked closely with staff to
ensure that the skills were
empowering them to produce a
measurable result relevant to
english class work.
Working in smaller cast groups we
gave a voice to many kids that had
never vocally participated prior to
this term.
Drama and performance often
provides a balanced approach to
learning and affords kids the outlet
to say what they want to say and
learn respectfully how to listen and
form courage and pride.

What is JTS proposing for 2017?
JTS Teaching Artist partners a
teacher for the school term.
Together they explore how drama
strategies can be integrated into any
area of English and literacy as well as
drama, such as narrative writing,
inferential comprehension,
confidence in oracy or descriptive
language.
Over eight weeks the Teaching
Artist team teaches the program
with the teacher in their classroom,
modelling the drama strategies and
empowering the teacher to
confidently integrate these ideas
and strategies into their regular
teaching practice.
Two customised planning sessions
before in-class workshops
commence.

Eight weekly in-class workshops
A wide range of drama strategies to
employ across the curriculum.
Alternative lesson plans can also
include working on published text
and focused drama lessons on
different theatre components to
include all aspects of performance
on and off stage and rehearsed
performance outcomes.
The ability to capitalise on the
groundwork made in the classroom
setting and continue to plan a future
for performing arts at your school
providing the kids a strong
foundation in performance.
Devise a plan / strategy to explore
the true value of a instilled drama

In term four of 2016 the JUTE Theatre Company ran a weeklytheatre workshop at Djarragun College. The mixed genderedIndigenous group of around thirty year 7,8,9 writing studentswere, at the beginning, timid and self-conscious when it cameto expressing themselves publicly. Under the guidance of actorsand theatre-trained professionals, Susan Prince and PetaCooke, the children grew in confidence and courage over thecourse of the term.
Each week Susan and Peta modelled acting performances, introduced stage settings, audience awareness, characterdevelopment and building, on stage and in character, rapportwith different characters. As the term progressed Susan andPeta started working with smaller groups sharing and passingon more nuanced strategies for performance. The studentsrefined their plays during the week and then worked once aweek with the Jute crew.
At the end of the term we had three plays performed oncamera. The real heroes of the group, the kids that showed theearly courage were many of the shyer girls in class. You mightsay they were the mouses that roared like lions. It was this group who grew exponentially in public speakingand straight out great acting performances.
It was inspiring to watch the young students find their voicesin a public arena. At a curriculum level the children studied theGrime Fairy tale, ‘The Handless Maiden’. In an attempt toteach critical thinking skills, the use of metaphors, symbolismand narrative structures we transformed a fairy tale into a playusing treatments and dialogue. From that exercise thestudents, conceptualising the themes extrapolated from ‘TheHandless Maiden’, wrote their own redemptive stories. In a safeenvironment, the students were able to grapple withcontemporary themes that are affecting their lives today. Asone student quipped in another class to another teacher inpassing, ‘I’m no handless maiden.’
While many of our students can show their flair in the sportingarena, they often struggle with the confronting aspects ofpublic speaking and expressing their creativity on a stage. Thisrecent pilot program run by Jute provided growth for ourstudents in their most stunted area of personal and publicdevelopment. I think it was an outstanding success and I dohope we can continue to build our relationship with Jute. Regards,
Dennis McIntosh
