In the section called ‘Shot type and movement’ describe what the frame is and if the camera is still or moving then analyse the effect of this. In the box labelled ‘analysis’ you need to look at everything you see in the screenshot and talk about why it’s there and how it appeals to an audience. For the box marked ‘Edits’ you should note what sort of edit or transition is used. There’s an example below. MUSIC VIDEO ANALYSIS Rolo Tomassi – Party Wounds Remember – Don’t just describe. MUSIC VIDEO ANALYSIS SHEET

Textual Analysis

Now that you have chosen a genre and song, you will need to produce at least three individual detailed analyses of similar products for you main task.

Analyse 1 (more you do, more marks) music videos of your choice in relation to cinematography, sound, mise-en-scene, editing and conventions (remember Goodwins. Genre and technical).

Task 1 -

Use the grid below to analyse your chosen music video. Remember you need to analyse how shot types, camerawork, Mise en Scene, editing, intertextuality and representation are used to make the video appeal to the target audience. Don’t describe what you see, analyse how it’s being presented to you.

Take screenshots from the video to illustrate your analysis and use a website like www.lyrics.com to find the lyrics. Write the lyric that matches the screenshot below it. If it’s a musical break then describe it, for example, ‘Drum solo and guitar feedback’.

MUSIC VIDEO ANALYSIS Rolo Tomassi – Party Wounds

Remember – Don’t just describe. You need to analyse the effect it has too. Always try and link it back to how it appeals to audience.

Music Video Textual Analysis- Justin Bieber –Beauty and the Beat ___________________________________________

Shot type and camera movementMid shot of Justin (the artist) handheld tracking shot of him walking through the party.

Analysis

A hand held point of view Mid shot, is used to show Justin walking through this pact party. He is the main focus and positioned central in the frame as he is the artist of this song, thus the main focus. The location of an outdoor party means that the mise en scene is colourful, bright and intriguing to his target audience who are teenage girls. The teenage girl demographic is very image conscious and colour driven so it is very important to appeal to their eyes. Justin is shown in a shallow focus so the dancers around him are blurred. Due to the blurring of the dancers the lyrics “What you got, a billion could've never bought” has more relevance as Justin is not concerned with the dancers he is just looking straight into the camera. This shows his concern with his fans.

Music/lyrics“What you got, a billion could've never bought (eh, eh, eh)!”

Edit/transitionsOne shot used to show Justin’s continuous movement through the party.

Shot type and camera movement- Long shot pan movement

Analysis

This long shot of Justin showcases his dance moves showing him to be multi-talented at singing and dancing. Left and right pans are both used in order to show the dancers around Justin who are all having a good time. The

dancers around Justin, create a positive atmosphere which compliments the fun song. As the dance section begins, it is clear they are dancing outside in water making a “splash.” The word “Splash” connotes fun and youth which are attributes that compliment Justin’s brand at that time, which was for young and care free children. At the end of this scene a dissolve is used to show Justin underwater.

A Two Shot

Analysis

A two shot of Justin and Nicki is shown in the music video during Nicki’s verse in the song. As she is featured on the song, it is important for her fan base and Justin’s to see her featured in the song. Nicki’s fan base are also now more likely to buy the song. The lyrics are very sexual so the fat they two are positioned so close connotes sexual energy.

Music/lyrics“Body rock, I want to feel your body rock”
