Since our last visit to thissubject, I have researchedsom e of the w ome n's ma gsthat c overed the 'Fern

debate'. What I found was that inthe vast ma jority of cases, those w hothoug ht she w as wrong to 'hide ' hersurge ry and only talk ab out the dietand exerc ise p art of her weight lossreg ime felt 'chea ted '. Seeing her assome iconic figure of the fullerfigured celebrity appeared less of

an issue tha n the 'fac t' that she ha dmade a choice not to reveal hersurge ry. There is some em pathy w iththat feeling, and, as some of youpointed out, she did not have toappear in articles talking aboutdieting a t all. That m ight ha ve ma deit more pa lata ble.

In the June 2008 issue of Woman'sOwn magazine, Fern is quoted assaying I didn't lie and there's noneed to. I do n't want to let anybod y

down but a girl likes to keepsom eth ing to herself. Tha t b eingthe c ase, as ma ny of you and othe rsin magazines point out, she shouldnot ha ve b een seen to infer it wa s alldo wn to will pow er. Also, it seem sthat the fac t that she is the fac e o fRyvita also goes some way to inferthat it was all down to diet andexercise.

Does this now mean that she's outof the fuller figured club? If you'vebeen a 'fatty' are you one for life(regardless of how slim you mayhave become)?

One woman I spoke to, whounderwent the surgery and has sofar lost ove r 5 stones, ad mitted tha tshe ha dn't told a nyone in her familyap art from her pa rtner and one o rtwo close friends because she

didn't think she would get anysupport. They wo uld just say that Itook the easy way out after notbeing bothered to give dieting areal chance, or some of themwould try and say that I'd beenpretending to be hap py a s a fa t girlbecause they are big and wouldfeel I'm judging the m.

The fa c t is, I wa s happy most of thetime. But, like anyone of any size, Ihad my down days, especially

when I went out shopping andcouldn't find youthful things to fitme w ithin my budg et. Som e of m yfam ily trea t me d ifferently since thewe ight loss and it upsets me. I'm nodifferent to the pe rson I was be foresurge ry ap art from feeling hap pierdue to many of the aches andpa ins I had being less seve re now . Idon't und erstand wha t their issue is.

Ma ybe it's jea lousy or fea r. I just w ishthey could be proud of what I'veac hieved and lea ve it at tha t, shesaid.

But she also spoke of the pain shewent through a s she d eveloped acomplication: It was awful. Ithought I was going to die. Oneminute I wa s b iting into a very sma llpiece of p izza and salad . A piecegot lodged in my stomach and I

be ga n to throw up . I c ouldn't eat o rd rink. I had to g o to the A&E and itwas a load of drama there as noone from the surgeon's team wasava ilab le to tend to me, and so aregular nurse tried poking a tubedown my stomach. I went crazyand told them to leave m e a loneuntil some one w ho knew wha t theywere doing was available to seeme.

I spent four days in hospital on a

drip until the blockage went and Iwas able to drink and eat a littlewithout throwing it back up. Ibecame vary wary of what andhow I ate from then on, but it's notalways easy to remember. I'vebe en a big g irl for a long time, so m yhab its are ve ry strong and I have tokeep reminding myself to eatconsciously.

    Kathy is the first to admit thath e r c u r r e n t p r o f i l e h a schanged her life in severalways, the first being her

exposure in the media: I havemade several public appearances

and have a lso ap pe ared on the bigtime te levision sta tion, WHAS 11 -with a segment dedicated to mebeing Ms Kentucky Plus America2008 during a new s at noon fea ture.I have be en on the front p ag e o f ThePioneer News, which is a localnew spa pe r in the c ounty tha t I wo rkin. I have also been on the frontpa ge of the b ig ne wspa pe r TheCourier Journal, which is in thec ounty whe re I live, and I had a full-pa ge sprea d in the fea tures sec tionof the same pa pe r.

    But the med ia a pp ea ranc es are notthe only thing that she has beene n j o y i n g s i n c e w i n n i n g t h e

pageant. Kathy has also metseveral high-profile people too,and has sta rted using her influenc efor the b etter -espec ially in terms ofself esteem. I have met mygovernor and attended several

fundraisers that help promote myplatform which is Preventing ChildAbuse a nd Neglec t. I have do neseveral photo shoots with differentphotographers and also met andhad my picture taken with Hea therFrench Henry, who was the MissAmerica 2000 winner (who is alsofrom Kentuc ky). One o f the b iggestwa ys it has chang ed my life thoughis that it has op ened up more d oo rsfor me to have the ability to helppromote positive self esteem in

plus-size women and meet andspeak with plus size women aboutloving your body no matter whatthe size is on the tag in yourfavourite d ress, she said.

    Kathy, a single mother of twor e c e n t l y g r a d u a t e d a s aparamedic and now works inEme rge nc y Me d ica l Serv ic es,help ing the sick, injured , and dying.Despite being busy Kathy does try

to ma intain a hea lthy balanc e withher home life and new-foundcelebrity: I was and am a singlemo ther of two b ea utiful da ughte rs,Esta shia and Triniti. I tend seek outevery oppo rtunity I ca n to promotethe realization to today's societythat beauty and success definitelydoe s c om e in sizes b igger than a 2,4, 6, 8, or even a 10 or 12. I a lso p laysand volleyball, softball, go to thegym and take ac ting c lasses whiledoing what I can to promote mymod elling a nd a cting c areer.

that you ca n do a nything that youset your mind to and that anynegativity or obstacles you mightcome to face are only mereroadblocks on your path to showeveryone tha t you are who you are.Just b ec ause yo u a re not a size 4, 6,or 8 do es not me an you d on't havethe right to shine. Be yourself andhold your head up high and knowtha t you a re a pa rt of soc iety's elite -the plus-size elite and let thatknowledge help lead you overthose roadblocks; so that in futureinstead of roadblocks they will bemerely bumps that you know youcan handle and let yourself shinethrough, she sa id.Kathy's dedicat ion cannot bedenied and is aided by her beliefthat be auty and succ ess c ome inall shapes and sizes and colours. There is no one in this wo rld anybe tter than the ne xt. Sure, you m ayhave more money, better clothes, longer leg s and a sma ller wa ist, butthat d oes not ma ke you better thanthe next person. Beauty is not onlyon the outside, be auty c om es alsofrom t he insid e . The p lus-sizepopulation is not here to try andta ke over a ll things. We just want tosimp ly be a cc ep ted a s pe op le tooand be given just the sameopportunities as the girl next door -for more often than no t, we are thegirl next d oo r, p lus-size and proud .

dest iny: I was searching theinternet looking for plus size eventsand competitions and found theMiss Plus America pagea nt system. Ihave a lways wa nted to see p lus-sizedivisions in all pageants and when Ic a m e a c r o ss t h is p a g e a n t

dedicated only to plus-size, Iimmediately had to check into itand then decided I wanted tobe c ome a pa rt of it, and she is gladshe d id so.

Kathy a lso p lans to use her influenceas a p lus-size b ea uty quee n to helpwomen suffering from low selfesteem and to spread the messag ethat b ig c an b e b ea utiful: I plan onusing my influence as Ms Kentucky

Plus Ame rica 2008 to ma ke a s muc hprogress as I possibly can in gettingout in the p ublic 's eye and show ingthat size acceptance is extremelyimportant because beauty andsuc c ess doe s c om e in the sizes of 18,20, 22, 24 and even size 30.

I also w ant to work on the fashionindustry because over 60% of thepopulation is plus-size and we likeour clothes to be just as nice andtrendy as the size 2's and 6's. I also

want to work on get t ing theente rta inment industry to o pe n their

eyes and see that the populationbeing over 60% plus size, want tosee more plus-size heroine's in theblockbuster movies and that weplus-size models and actresses cando just as go od if not b ette r ac tingthan our small size counterparts...

Romance does not only come insma ll sizes either... I no t o nly wa nt t orepresent the plus-size industry, Iwa nt to he lp other plus-size wom enwho are affected by society'snegativity in size acceptance tolearn to love their body andthem se l ves ; and do no t l e tanyone's view s of the m d ete rminetheir self worth. I would like to beab le to give spe ec hes and talk togroups about size acceptanceand p rom ot i ng pos i t i ve se l f

success does come in plus-size, noma tter what soc iety or the ge neralpub lic wa nts to try and set a limit to.Additiona lly, get up eve ry morning,

Last month I wrote about ourambitions to include five-a-day in

our annual girly weekend away, and I'm very glad to say we kept toour sched ule (a lthough it wa s hard). The Stra wb erry Da ka ri's we redelicious, served on the Saturda ylunchtime whilst wearing pyjamas. We inc luded Bacardi, orang e juic e,lots of fresh strawberries, crushedic e, prob ab ly a da sh of vodka a nd Iseem to remember cranberry juicebeing added as well. Lots of goodthings in there -cranberry juice isessent ial to he lp keep cystitis a t b ay.

A couple of Dakari's later we wererea dy to tuck into the wa termelon.Very dedicated to her task, myfriend went to the greengroce r andasked for a nic e wa termelon whichwasn't too big and would sit nicelyon its end, and he delivered theperfec t spec imen. This wa s put inthe g arage for abo ut four da ys witha funnel pressed in the top, beingfed vod ka on a reg ular ba sis so tha tit wo uld see p through the flesh. It

wo rked ok, but b eing c areful girls wecut it short of the seven daysrec omm end ed thinking it may spo ilthe melon flesh. (We now think itwould have been OK and wouldhave avoided some of the fleshbe ing prac tica lly pure vod ka). Wedidn't complain though as wesucked the rind d ry and threw it allaround the cha let. We had ourBucks Fizz on the Friday after wearrived, but omitted the orangejuice (so that was a failure I guess,

very nice it wa s thoug h).

Amazing how you can still put onmake up even though you havehad several glasses of the fizzwitho ut the buc ks. This is a kna c k wehave developed over the years

(you just c hoo se the 70's weekendsas be ing the d ec ad e ta ste forgot, if

you have bright b lue a nd p ink eyeshadow in a flourish a c ross to yourearlobes). It really doesn't matter. We had our pizza and even slippe din some salad along with thetomato sauce and mushrooms, topped off with some beer withlime stuffed into the top .

All in all, I think the five-a-dayadventure was pretty successfuland we have already bookedano ther for next year.

A down side to your five a day istexting your pa rtner a t 02:45 (am) to

tell him that you love him, then at02:48 wondering whe re your rep ly is;forgetting that you ha ve g one into70's weekend time which is totallyout o f sync with the rest o f the w orld,t hen aga in a t 03 :00 say ingsomething else unprintable. (Hedid, however, enjoy relaying thetexts to m e w hen I go t hom e)

Anothe r do wn side wa s tha t I c am ehome and had to go to the doctorsas I ap pea red to have c aught a

chest infection (that seemed tohave burnt out some of my brainc ells). I found myself p icking out thewrong words and stagger ingaround with the coordination ofOzzy Osbo urne on the Mo nday a ndwa ited a t a c rossing in the c ar on agreen light. To c ap it all, ab out a nhour ago I put on the umpteenthload of washing and on autopilotsc oop ed a m ea sure up and threw itin the d ispenser. Sound s OK do esn'tit? Only we stopped using powder

in our household a bo ut a year ag oin favo ur of the conc entrated liquidstuff. I had sc oope d up a mea surefull of dried do g foo d and thrown itinto the d rawer. Big sigh, my partne rand kids enjoyed that at myexpense.

Would I advocate our unhealthyfive-a-day? Well, once in a longwhile I think you can be forgiven forletting your hair down -I hope soanyway and if isn't, then that's

alright as it's going to be 30 yearssince we left school next year(eek!). So tha t's a go od enoughexcuse to do some more resea rch,and I ma y have rec overed by then(only just)!
