Errday after school, Emily rides her bus home, excited to see her puppy Bruce. She rides ten

blocks through the neighborhood and past Emran, who lives in a van.

Emily stepped through the door and threw her backpack down. The house was eerily quiet.

Bruce! Im home! she called out to the empty house. Hmm, she wondered. He must be

sleeping.Brrng! Brnng! rang the phone, interrupting her thoughts. Emily, having just turned eight years

old, was often warned not to answer to strangers. But this time, she felt a pull to the ringing

    phone.

Hello? she answered. This is Emily.

Emily! the ominous voice cackled. Just the person I was looking for! Emily gulped, already

regretting her decision to pick up the phone.

Who are you? she asked again, her voice wavering.

Your greatest enemy! the voice replied gleefully. But I will tell you this. I have somethingthat is of great importance to you. Take a look around you, whats missing?

Emily desperately looked around her; she looked from left to right, but nothing seemed out of

place. When she was just about to reply, it hit her. No! she cried. Whatve you done with

    Bruce?

Muahaha! Ive kidnapped him! If you ever want to see him again, you must first meet me at the

Forbidden Forest at twelve midnight. See you there sweetie pie~

Slowly, she turned to face the darkness that seemed to envelope her, expanding with malicious

    intent.

Oh well, Emily thought. I guess its up to me to save Bruce, or I might never see him again,

she mused, a tear trickling down her cheek. After all, she was also known as Emily Excellent

    Girl.

With her new found determination, she put on her cape, and when the clock finally struck twelve,

Emily flew out the door, eager to start her adventure.

As she made her way through the night, the Forbidden Forest seemed to rise out of nowhere, a

thick mass of gnarly branches twisting and reaching for the starry night sky. Emily took a deep,

then plunged forward into the dark woods. There was no going back.

    Ring-ding-ding-ding-dingeringeding, howled a distant fox.

Who, who? asked a nearby owl.

What else could be hiding in these enigmatic woods? Excellent Girl forged on, wrapping her

cape a little tighter. She jumped over fallen trees and trudged through deep trenches of debris and

    leaves.

In the clearing ahead, a hooded figure stood holding a shaded lantern. Emily inched closer,

peering through the brush to get a better look at the mysterious figure.

She stepped back with a look crunch.

Youve arrived! it exclaimed. Emily held her breath and inched tiptoed forward, careful not to

    make another sound.

Who are you? she called back.

If youre ready come and get it , it taunted.

Emily darted out, ready to attack it. Suddenly, she heard a snarl and a ferocious wolf emerged

from under the cloak, snapping its jaws. No fear, for Emily had already anticipated a surprise

attack. She swiftly avoided his deadly blows and struck the wolf in the side. The wolf howled in

pain and shock as he had not foreseen her fighting skills. With a final blow to his head and a kick

to his knee, Emily stood over the fallen wolf, triumphant. But as she was about to leave the scene,

out of the corner of her eye, she saw the wolf reach out with a weakened paw.

No, no, I dont mean to rekindle the fight again. Now that I have witnessed your skill, I have

faith that you will be able to defeat the trickster thief behind all of this. Can I assist you in any

    way? the wolf offered.

Lead the way wolf, tell me how I should proceed, Emily replied with hesitation.

The wolf limped forward into the darkness, Emily following only a few steps behind. Before she

knew it, they had arrived at a fork in the path. They halted immediately before it, unsure how to

    continue.

Oh no! I dont know which way to go, do you? She asked as she looked down at the wolf,

which just shrugged in reply. I cant remember, it toldher. I had just received many blows to

my head, it must have slipped my mind. I believe in you. You can see the clues and make the

right choice. Emily glanced from the left path to the right, not sure which path to choose. She

walked to the first option and looked down the trail, trying to pick up any clues that would lead

her the right way. She saw nothing. Emily went over to the other choice and looked there too.

She observed for a few minutes until she finally spotted something. A clue! Near the entrance of

the path, there were large footprints stamped in the ground with tiny paw prints spotting the area

close by. It has to be Bruces paw prints! This is the direction we should go, come on! She

urgently cried out to the wolf and took off down the trail. The wolf followed slowly behind, still

sore from the fight. The path was filled with twists and turns as Emily struggled through thorns

and heavy brush, but eventually she arrived at a large clearing. A shadowy figure stood next tohis all too familiar white van with his broad back turned. Emily and the wolf started towards the

man. As he began turning around, Emily gasped. She recognized the man standing before her; it

was Emran! He fully faced Emily and the wolf, clutching Bruce in his arms. Give me my puppy

back right now you trickster thief! Hes mine, Emily yelled at Emran while looking nervously

towards Bruce. Emran cackled as he put a barking Bruce into a small cage, which he threw into

the open doors of his white van. Youre going to have to beat me if you ever want to get your

precious dog back, he replied to Emily, laughing as he completed his sentence. As he spoke,

Emily felt a sudden surge of anger for Emran; she saw his lips moving, but seemed deaf to his

words as her feelings of contempt took over her thoughts. She took a few steps forward and

focused all her energy towards the power in her hands. She raised her arms, the palms of her

hand facing Emran as a slow glow began to shine from he hands; it slowly got brighter and

brighter until Emran finally stopped laughing and stared in shock when he realized what washappening. He had no idea what to do. The glow from Emilys hands finally became a bright

yellow and beamed straight towards Emran, knocking him unconscious. Emily was able to run to

Bruce, unlock the cage, and take off running with him in her arms. She turned back one more

time to see the wolf standing in the opening. Thank you for supportingme and helping me. It

means a lot to me, Ill see you around. Emily called out to the wolf, its head bowed in reply as if

to say youre welcome. Emily then looked down at Bruce. She hugged and kissed him all over

telling him how worried she was. They exited the Forbidden Forest without a second glance and

continued on their way until they reached home. From that day on, Emily made sure to always

keep an eye out on Bruce wherever they went and she never saw Emran or his van again.
