You shall love and your neighbor as yourself (Luke 10:27).It may be a small thing, but it is always appreciated. It might be that

there is a car waiting to enter the traffic flow. It is the evening rush hour

and each driver is anxious to get home. The traffic is frustratingly slow. The lights seem to always be red. Some indecisive driver is having a hard

time knowing the difference between the brake and the accelerator. And

there is that car that is waiting in the 7-Eleven driveway, hoping to be al-lowed back into the street. Should you pause and let the car enter? A part

of you says, Yes. It would be the nice thing to do. It you dont let the

car into the traffic, who will? The person is just trying to get home like therest of the drivers. A voice in you says, Do it! Be nice. Then there is

another voice that draws upon the impatience of the frustration in your

character. That voice says, No! You are tired. You have waited

through three light changes to finally get moving. Surely there will be a

brake in the traffic a little later. Besides, if you stop, it causes anger on thepart of everyone who is behind you. They are all in a hurry to get home

too. So, what do you do? You listen to your better self and allow the driv-

er into the traffic. Everyone pauses. The driver waves a statement of ap-

preciation. The light changes again, and everyone waits a for the nextgreen light. Then everyone arrives home, just a couple of minutes later

    than they would have.

Still, before we stop the traffic flow at every waiting car, there are cir-

cumstances that have to be brought to bear. There are more people on the

road than just you and that waiting driver. There are dangers to stoppingthe movement of traffic (besides road rage). We are not challenged to ex-tend love in the form of courtesy if it causes undue hardship or even dan-

ger to others. Keeping it all in play, there must be reason, and not excuse.

Far, too often our worlds become quite small. Our personal interests,

desires, and frustrations become the center of all that is important. Jesus

draws us to the ancient command. Often it is just a little courtesy. Russ
