p rIS:hours spent shopping

Paris is too good to spend your time in shops or fitting rooms. And yet, if you happen to be stuck in it for a longer period and find yourself tired of the Louvre, Montmartre and other bohemian endeavours, then you can visit places where things cannot be purchased by just any ordinary mortal. Those with weak nervous system should definitely avoid Chanel and YSL shops, and should stay out of the Elysian Fields at large. But this time we’ll do everything just the opposite by going where one can spend a pay check in a heartbeat, and gaze upon breathtaking interiors…

FASHION & STYLE S h o p p i N g

Fashion house Hermès is another legend of Paris. It has surpassed the Baccarat itself when French perfumers Maurice Roucel and Bernard Bourjois created the fragrance 24 Faubourg. Sold for €1700 per 30 ml bottle, the perfume is rated as the 2nd world’s most expensive. It is a limited edition fragrance produced only in 1000 bottles a year. Of course, the perfume is only a prelude to the arsenal of Hermès, the manufacturer of probably the most expensive handbags in the world, located in the 1st arrondissement of Paris, 24 Rue du Faubourg Saint-Honoré. Founded in 1837, the fashion house employed such fashion icons as Eric Bergère, Martin Margiela, Jean-Paul Gaultier, Christophe Lemaire (current creative director of Hermès) and still has every piece made by hand. That is why their works of art are so darn expensive. Few months ago, for instance, Lady Gaga has bought the famous Hermès Birkin handbag for £49,000…

paris in your mouTH Paris is a city of contrasts. And so are its shops: from haute couture classics to contem-

porary modernism. If you want to get a taste of Paris, try the Ladurée. So if you wish to feel or even to digest Paris in your mouth, go straight to Ladurée shop and restaurant at the Elysian Fields. Its interior will immediately take you back a century ago, to the times where one talented French named Louis-Ernest Ladurée has started to make colourful, melt-in-your-mouth cookies called the macaroons. By the way, if you plan to eat at the Ladurée, be prepared to spend up to €50 for a couple of cookies packed in a magnificent French box. And if that is not enough, take a tour through the Saint-Germain district, where you will find a truly Parisian atmosphere and probably all possible French delica-tecies in one place.

CrysTal and world’s mosT expensive perfumes

Crystal house Maison Baccarat is a place offering one of the world’s most expensive per-fumes – Les Larmes Sacrées de Thebes. Limited to only ten 500 ml bottles a year, the parfume comes in crystal-encursted bottles with 18 carat gold collar and sells for €5000 per piece! Philippe Starck, the famous French designer, showed his brain and muscles in this super deluxe store, being the one to transform the former Paris mansion of the French aris-tocrat Marie-Laure de Noailles into the Bacarrat’s headquarters and luxurious crystal store, an adjacent museum with more than just an impressive collection of crystal, and finally – an extravagant Starck-style decor restaurant with dining room infused with hand-made glass chandeliers. To see it for yourselves, look for historical building at 11 Place des États-Unis (approx. 500 meters from the Triumphal Arch).

Fancy something far more thrilling than a perfume bottle for the price of a car or pure crystal chandeliers? In that case you should stop by the Chanel Boutique, located in the legendary 31 Rue Cambon. Naturally, one could chat about the Chanel stores and tweedy suits all night long, but it will be enough to say that Rue Cambon is something more than just an address for Chanel store filled with handbags designed by Carl Lagerfeld’s assistants and Chanel no. 5, the 10th world’s most expensive perfume sold for €170 per bottle. It is the house of mademoiselle Coco Chanel herself. Rumour has it though, that Coco had never spent a night in the several-floor apartments above the store. For throughout the thirty years she would stay in a nearby luxurious hotel Ritz.

Nevertheless, Rue Cambon apartments remained as it were at the time when the flighty designer

used to come back from the Ritz in the mornings. The ground floor, now

occupied by the Chanel boutique, still has the spectacular mirrored staircase featured in every movie ever cretaed about Chanel, and when you climb upstairs you reach the astonishing world of Coco Chanel interiors. Her personal sitting room, still predominated with the art deco, stores a number

of items from the Coco collection: glass figures, crystal balls, stuffed deers, books, luxurious armchairs upholstered in flowered and beige gobelin, as well as the legendary modern sofa designed by mis Chanel herself, 18th-century crystal chandelier, Chinese screens and other extravagant details.

ColeTTe vs. merCi – design THaT roCks

Walking the same Rue Saint-Honoré, look for building no. 213 where you will find yet another Parisian cult shop Colette. Of course, the interior of this concept design shop has nothing to do with what you see at Chanel or Hermès. Rather, it resembles the Berlin concept design shops or even to the Things Hotel (lt. Daiktų viešbutis) established in a loft in Vilnius. However, at Colette not only you can find conceptual design pieces, but also the popular parisiant brands such as Dior, Lanvin, Yves Saint Laurent, and, of course, such fashion radicals as Thomas Browne, Gareth Pugh or Comme des Garçons. Another spectacular concept design shop in Paris is Merci, located in the 3rd arondissement of Paris, 111 Boulevard Beaumarchais. The store houses a number of small French and foreign design boutiques, including the famous Australian natural cosmetics brand Aesop. It is definitely worth seeing how the Melbourne designers March Studio have decorated the shop with 4,500 plain cardboard boxes placed within a quasi-fishing net strung across the ceiling and allowed to droop. The shops we’ve mentioned here is only a small piece of what you may find in the Paris megalopolis, housing thousands of fashion houses and independent designers. So don’t forget your handbag and your purse, and Bon Voyage!

“aka jewellery” – the tandem of jewellery

alchemists from New York

Few years ago two Lithuanian jewellers Ausra Bankauskaite and Mante Maskoliunaite, working under “aka jewellery” name, have moved to NYC and for awhile now are creating decadent and very conceptual jewellery. Not everyone, or maybe no one, would have the guts to wear their conceptual pieces.

JEWELLERY RAVERS-ALCHEMISTS. You could say they’re sort of jewellery reivers or modern alchemists from Broo-klyn. Things they use for making jewellery ranges from medical syringes to Haribo gummies, from silver to rubber, from blood

tubes to antifreeze, from white amber to magnets, from ribbons to the machine oil, from pills to gasoline, from brake fluid to resin... “We create in several directions. Some of our works are “portable jewellery”, affordable to someone who appreciates the aesthetics of our works and is looking for something original. Another direction that brings us as the artists the greatest sa-tisfaction is conceptual jewellery. It conveys our thoughts and ideas”, says the tandem.

MEDICAL THEME AND FASHION. “We won’t deny that our recent works are dominated by the medical theme. It’s because we often combine metal with medical glass which complements our architectural style with its transparency and purity. We dis-cover materials during the creative process; it’s not a primary indicator, it’s only a mean to express the idea. Thus, the ideas for works shift from one to another. We focus on what we believe to be the sensitive problems of modern society, such as racism (“blue blood”) or fitting the human body to standards (“Perfect

Beauty”). Currently we work on a joint project with visual artists Viktorija Medvedeva from Amsterdam and Zara Zerny from New York. Soon we’ll introduce the series of short fashion films called the Albedo. Albedo (en. whiteness) is the second of four alche-mical stages, the transition from darkness to light. When the flashes of white silverish light fill the space, the shapes appear. None but illumination paves the way to development”.

Dark intellectual jewellery:

the Our Darkest Desires collection

Vilius Venckevicius. If this costume designer and jeweller would be compared with foreign fashion designers, he could subjectively be compared with such fashion industry radicals as Gareth Pugh, Rick Owens or even Alexander McQueen. Vi-lius himself often says that he admires works by Maison Martin Margiela and Ann Demeulemeester, whom he had met in person while studying at the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences. Lots of black, complex design, dark stones, skulls, stuffed animals – decadent attributes that often help to iden-tifying the works of Vilius, jewellery in particular. He’s like a jewellery Goth.

JEWELLERY’S GOTH-INTELECTUAL. The Our Darkest Desires collection is premoninated by one memorable and con-traversial element or symbol – a tiny skull placed here and there

among the stones, hidden in every piece. “A skull, at first im-pression largely associated with death, actually carries a sym-bolic meaning of change, transition, evolution, transformation, and certainly not in a bad way”, says Vilius. “As a designer, I’ve always understood a costume as a combination of elements, some sort of a puzzle, consisting of individual, yet delicately intercon-nected details. The whole is composed out of segments, thus eve-ry each of them is very important and plays a certain role. An accessory for me is not just a simple adornment, a supplement. At the same time (and for a long time) it has been an amulet, protection, symbol, one’s beliefs and certain vows, a worldview and important information about the owner. It is both a sign and a quote”, claims Vilius, “I’ve decided to create the Our Darkest Desires collection due to my passion for natural stones. I collect

“A Roe-deer Tale”. Three types of agate and natural deer horn.

“Black perfumery”. Necklace with a tiny scent bottle of scent. Agate, obsidian, onyx, coral, ceramics, leather.

Page 57: Jurgita no1

them myself, I use them to create jewellery, I sleep, eat and me-ditate with them, and I carry one or another with me practically every day”.

STONES AND SKULLS. “Every mineral, stone or a metal pie-ce is made up of mineral and sometimes of organic substances, and is very close to a human being himself. After all, our body encompasses the entire Mendeleev’s table! Our bodies contain sulphur, iron, gold and so on. Therefore, I believe that a mineral carried close to the body can enrich us with that we sometimes have a lack of. This is why they say it’s the stones that choose us and not the other way around. I feel personally attached to every piece I’ve made. A kind of confession... self-portrait. I’ve limited myself to two “colours”, achromatic to be precise, the two most

mysterious tones – black and white”, the designer introduces his philosophy. “I use probably the strongest stones in terms of ener-gy that bring considerable changes to one’s life: onyx, obsidian, agate, quartz and rock crystal, smoky quartz, tourmaline and tourmalinated quartz, rutile quarz also known as the Venus-hair stone, gagat, sardonic, volcanic lava and meteors, complemen-ting them with genuine leather, fur, animal horns, various me-tals, glass and human hair. My goal was to make an amulet from every piece of jewellery, a magical symbol, protective measure, just as in the initial function of an accessory”. Presently, some of Vilius works leave Lithuania to find their “masters” in the Netherlands, Germany or Great Britain. Every piece of this col-lection is unique and has no equivalent, primarily because there are no two identical stones.

“Frozen Keymaker”. Natural rabbit fur, antique keys, rock crystal, white sardonikso, coral, glass.

“The Spell”. This ring is created from ceramics, silver, agate, smoky quartz, freshwater pearls and lava.

“Dark Medicine Man”. Horn shape necklace. Pomander, the container

odors, which can be hand scented with natural scents of wool, a piece of cloth

or expensive thing. Onyx, obsidian, agate, meteorites and volcanic lava.

Fawaz

He is titled as the king of diamonds, his business card – black diamonds. Being only 18 years old, he started working as a jeweller’s assistant in

Florence and his fascination with gems has shortly guaranteed him a bre-athtaking career in the diamond business and jewellery design for life. He was the first jeweller to have started using black diamonds, long forgotten

by his colleagues, thus giving them the new meaning and the title of an incredible luxury – de Grisogono. As if the godfather of black diamonds, he

used to buy up a lot of these gems from the remote African mines and turn them into shining polished diamonds. Today de Grisogono is more than

just a jewellery house in Switzerland. Today it is one of the most famous brands of high jewellery and luxury watches in the world. And Italian-born

Fawaz Gruosi is not simply the founder. He is the soul of de Grisogono.

This year, first time ever de Grisogono gems appeared in Lithu-ania. Fawaz Gruosi himself has chosen the jewellery for the latest collection by Juozas Statkevičius, held in Vilnius. Only that this time the black de Grisogono diamonds were replaced with the white ones, yet no less sparkly, whereas with the designer himself we were unexpectedly introduced by London-based Lithuanian model Ditė Antanaitytė.

Thus, we invite you to get acquainted with a man who made the hardly processed black diamonds shiny and astonishing.

How did you first get into a real diamonds industry?I started to work for Bulgari and Harry Winston; I used to be General Manager in

South-Arabia for Harry Winston. Therefore I was representing Bulgari and visiting the VIP’s where they had no Boutiques, at that time they had only 9, so I was going all over the world and I happened to meet a lot of people and then I decided to start my own company and creations.“de Grisogono” is one of the most famous high jewellery brand now. What is your future plans for the brand you have created in 1993?I want to pursue the creativity and keep it very exclusive.

,,My home is in planes, hotels and in my bed.

What you can say about “Harry Winston” and “Bulgari”, and other luxury jewellery brands that you have worked with some years ago...As I said before, both companies and beautiful brands and I am very glad to have worked for them at that time, it was such a great era!Working with diamonds and luxury jewellery – what does it mean to you?I love my job I have the chance to evolve in this business for many years. I love gems and I love jewellery. It’s a perfect habit for me.“The Spirit of de Grisogono” is the world's largest cut black diamond. How did you get your hands on it? What was the price of it back in

the days and how much does it cost now?As I was the first one to make jewellery with black diamonds, it was easier to find pure and beautiful stones. Someone came to propose me this astonishing diamonds, I sold it after a year for 1.5 mio.

Which is your favourite piece of jewellery that you worked on?My favourite piece is still in my head and not designed yet. I am thrilled and very excited to the pieces that I will design and not about what I have done. The future is very important to me.

What is the latest fashion trend in diamonds industry?I like the fact that people can be inspired by de GRISOGONO and I don’t follow any trend. I don’t really see Fashion trend in the jewellery industry, I see more inspiration depending on the moment and life.

Are Diamonds a Girl's Best Friends? (like Marilyn Monroe said) :)Diamonds are embellishing women and give them character. I prefer to say that they are Women’s security.

I heard, you are travelling a lot. Where is your home and the main workplace at this time? My home is in planes, hotels and in my bed. I feel at home when I am in Geneva, where is the Head Office of de GRISOGONO.

Would you like to visit Lithuania? What things have you heard about it?Yes, I would love to visit Lithuania. I heard only good things from my friends about this country, I look forward to discovering it in a better way. What can we expect from “de Grisogono” next year?Wait and see…

Juozas

Can we make parallels between the most famous Lithuanian de-signer Juozas Statkevičius and Karl Lagerfeld? Of course not. However, just as Karl’s show is the most anticipated show during the Paris fashion week, in Lithuania the most anticipated fas-hion show of the year is that of Juozas! No one but Karl is capable of dragging an iceberg to the Chanel runway directly from the Atlantic Ocean, a part of Place Vendôme in Paris, to build a farm in a museum or pave the entire runway. Meanwhile, Juozas does his mighty works in Vilnius. Only Juozas would think of erec-ting evolution relicts and dinosaur skeletons on the runway. And this year he surprised the audience with three rows of Mercedes cars with full auxiliary staff, gas cylinders and... a white horse.

STATKEVIčIUS:

Yes, that was the spring/summer collection 2012 by Juozas Statkevičius. By the way, it was double. Literally. The new collection was launched two times, and there is nothing strange about that. Chanel with Karl La-gerfeld holds two fashion shows in a row as well (one for clients and one for the press). So Juozas Couture show did no worse than those in Paris, and the guests practically filled up the venue twice. Of course, at first it appeared that luxurious high auto “coaches” sponsored by Mercedes-Benz would soon upstage his models, but that did not happen. There’s no car that could upstage Dexter Fletcher, Arvydas Sabonis women, famous models, including Ditė Antanaitytė (London), Margarita Švėgždaitė-Be-cu (Paris) and many others, modelling Juozas collection. And of course – the famous Lithuanian ballet-dancer Eglė Špokaitė, wearing the fabu-lous wedding dress to culiminate the show. Not to mention the diamond jewellery and MANOLO BLAHNIK cult shoes, designed specifically for the fashion show…

The latest collection by Juozas Statkevičius has started far away from here. Wondering around the repositories of Paris modern art museum the Centre Georges Pompidou together with the Centre‘s employee Nicole Richy, Juozas Statkevičius saw the works of Piet Mondrian, an early abstractionist and the pioneer of de Stijl movement. “In the Pompidou repositories I saw a different, unfamiliar, non-chrestomathic Mondrian. It has stunned me, the gentleness of his works, full of contrasts between rigid rectangular compositions and pearlescent pink shades of grey”, said Juozas long before the fashion show. From this moment he knew that the predominant theme of his new collection shall be the early works of Mondrian… “When you’ll be looking at the mo-dels, don’t waste your time trying to find the equally reflected and transferred rectangulars. That would have been too easy, let alone the fact that it has already been done. But the sharp-sighted will notice the tribute to Mondrian structures: in a wavy organza skirt, made of horizontal and vertical parts, or the fabric made by the famous Dormeuil Ltd. under a special order by Juozas Statkevičius Couture. However, it is mostly revealed through the purity of forms, and the search for an abstract beauty”.

The collection 2012 also included 20 impressive men designs for sty-lish leisure. This year they were less structural. On the contrary, flo-ating lines of CADI silk suits, silk and cotton shirts and jackets, as well as all the necessary male accessories – non-clichéd and comfor-tably made from selected materials. The line should be interesting to an open-minded, large-calibre men concerned about their looks and image. These clothes will make them look bohemian and aristocratic both in Vilnius, Paris, London or New York.

Parisian inspiration was spreading like a virus. the videoteque was complemented with French movies. the editorial office bookshelves were filled with beautiful books, French fashion magazines and articles about the legendary Paris designers, the true couturiers... the headphones played the wonderful soundtrack from the Fabulous Life of amélie Poulain, mesmerising electronic air music, and even George Bizet and maurice Ravel classics. it seemed that the only thing missing was the good old French record-player and a typewriter instead of computer.
