EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
This report presents the results of a re-evaluation of the Jurassic – Tertiary stratigraphy of four southern
Newfoundland margin wells (Laurentian, South Whale and Whale Basins); East Wolverine G-37, Eider
M-75, Emerillon C-56 and Narwhal F-99, carried out on behalf of Nalcor Energy.
Biostratigraphic (palynological and micropalaeontological) and lithologic analyses have been carried
out on the following well sections, in order to establish a revised, internally consistent and regionally
correlative stratigraphic framework.
East Wolverine G-37: Middle Miocene, Serravallian – Bathonian / ?Bajocian
Eider M-75: Early Maastrichtian / Campanian – Aalenian / ?Late Toarcian
Emerillon C-56: Late Campanian – ?Sinemurian / Hettangian
Narwhal F-99: Early Pliocene – Berriasian – Volcanics
This study, commissioned by Nalcor Energy, is a continuation of our earlier well studies carried out as
part of a much larger regional assessment of the slope and deepwater prospectivity of the offshore
Eastern Canada Newfoundland / Labrador margins, with the aim of improving shelf-slope-deepwater
stratigraphic correlations.

2. OBJECTIVES
A biostratigraphic / lithostratigraphic study of four wells (East Wolverine G-37, Eider M-75, Emerillon
C-56 and Narwhal F-99) has been carried out as part of a larger regional assessment of the hydrocarbon
prospectivity of the southern Newfoundland margin (Laurentian, South Whale and Whale Basins) with
the goal of improving the interpretation of shelf-slope stratigraphic correlation. The East Wolverine G-
37, Eider M-75 and Emerillon C-56 wells were chosen by Nalcor as representative datasets that cover a
range of stratigraphies in the slope and deepwater regions in the Southern Newfoundland area. The
Eider M-75 well, which is located on the shelf, was selected due to its encountered stratigraphy
coverage and also as a representative dataset for the shelfal Whale Basin.
The study attempts to present a revised, internally consistent and regionally correlative Jurassic to
Tertiary biostratigraphic (palynological and micropalaeontological) and lithostratigraphic framework.
Newly prepared ditch cuttings samples obtained via the CNLOPB have been used throughout the four
well study. These biostratigraphic datasets are to be integrated into a regional seismic interpretation,
providing the foundation for extending the basin-to-basin tie lines, as well as anchoring the
interpretations away from the shelf and into the slope and deepwater regions that lack well control.
The southern Newfoundland margin (Laurentian, South Whale and Whale Basins) is situated to the
north-northeast of the Scotian Shelf, southwest of the Jeanne D’Arc Basin and west of the Carson -
Bonnition Basin. The drilled sequences occurring within the Laurentian, South Whale and Whale
Basins, include sediments which are comparable to those recorded from both the Scotian and Jeanne
D’Arc Basins. As such a “best fit” lithostratigraphic nomenclature for these Laurentian, South Whale
and Whale Basin wells, has been taken from both the Scotian and Jeanne D’Arc Basins; following
published schemes of Jansa and Wade (1975), McAlpine (1990), McIver (1972) and Wade (1981).
Chronostratigraphic terminology follows Gradstein et al. (2012).
Tertiary micropalaeontology is based on Ascoli (1976, 1988), Charnock & Jones (1990), D’Iorio
(1986, 1987), D’Iorio & Agterberg (1989), King (1989) and unpublished personal observations.
Mesozoic micropalaeontology follows Ascoli (1976, 1981, 1988a, b, 1990), Ascoli et al. (1990), Exton
and Gradstein (1984), Gradstein (1975, 1976, 1978), Gradstein et al. (1975), King et al. (1989), Stam
(1986), Williams et al. (1990), Williamson (1987) and unpublished personal observations.
The Jurassic – Tertiary palynology is largely based on Barss et al. (1979), Bujak & Williams (1978),
Fensome et al. (2009), Gradstein et al. (1975), van Helden (1986), Williams (1974), Williams &
Brideaux (1975), Williams et al. (1990), plus Williams and Bujak (1977) and unpublished personal
observations.

5. CONCLUSIONS
The following conclusions are noted:
1. ?Iroquois Formation
This sequence of sediments only occurs in the Emerillon C-56 well. It has only been tentatively
assigned to the Iroquois Formation, based on lithological criteria (red and green-stained
claystones, interbedded with dolomites and locally anhydrite beds). A tentative Hettangian /
Sinemurian age has been assigned based on regional criteria.
2. The Downing Formation / Downing Formation Equivalent / Whale Member
The Downing Formation is present, as a thick sedimentary package, in three wells (East
Wolverine G-37, Eider M-75 and Emerillon C-56). It has a maximum stratigraphic range of
Pliensbachian? / Early Toarcian through to Late Bathonian.
The Downing Formation exhibits a wide variation in facies; in the Emerillon C-56 well, the
sedimentary sequence is dominated by limestone (often oolitic) indicating a shallow, high
energy marine environment, whereas in both the East Wolverine G-37 and Eider M-75 wells the
sequences are more argillaceous, indicating deeper water, more tranquil, marine environments.
The Whale Member of intra-Bajocian age is only seen in the Eider M-75 well.
3. Voyager Formation / Voyager Formation Equivalent
This marginal marine to inner sublittoral sedimentary sequence, as seen in East Wolverine G-
37, Eider M-75 and Emerillon C-56, has an observed stratigraphic range of Late Bathonian to
“Middle” Callovian.
No Late Jurassic (Oxfordian – Tithonian) are preserved in the four well sections studied.
4. Verrill Canyon Formation / “Middle Missisauga Member”
The Verrill Canyon Formation is recognised in two wells, East Wolverine G-37 and Narwhal F-
99. It has an observed stratigraphic range of Berriasian to Late Barremian.
Thin “Middle Missisauga Member” sandstones are of Berriasian to Early Valanginian age.
Well-developed limestone units are also noted in the Narwhal F-99 well.
5. Missisauga Formation
The arenaceous Late Barremian – earliest Aptian, Missisauga Formation, is only recognised in
the Emerillon C-56 well.
RILEY GEOSCIENCE LTD. SOUTHERN NEWFOUNDLAND MARGIN STRATIGRAPHIC STUDY – SEPTEMBER 2016
_______________________________________________________________________________________________________
17
6. Logan Canyon Formation, Naskapi Member
Aptian, Naskapi Member, sediments occur in the East Wolverine G-37 well and they may also
be present in the Emerillon C-56 well. Large numbers of planktic foraminiferids suggest a more
open marine environment in East Wolverine G-37, than that inferred in possible correlative
sediments in the Emerillon C-56 well.
8. Logan Canyon Formation
This predominantly arenaceous sequence Aptian aged sediments is only seen in the Emerillon
C-56 well. It is envisaged to have been deposited in a transitional to inner sublittoral marine
environments.
9. Shortland Shale / Shortland Shale Equivalent
The Albian, Shortland Shale only occurs in Narwhal F-99. These sediments are envisaged to
have been deposited in an inner sublittoral marine environment.
A slightly deeper water, low energy, marine environment (Shortland Shale Equivalent) is
recognised in the East Wolverine G-37 well.
9. Eider Formation
These unconformity bounded, marginal marine / inner sublittoral sediments of Late Albian /
Cenomanian age are only recognised in the Eider M-75 well.
10. Eider Formation Equivalent / Shortland Shale
A transitional series of sediments (Early – Late Albian) between the marginal marine / inner
sublittoral Eider Formation Equivalent and the inner sublittoral Shortland Shale is recognised in
the Emerillon C-56 well.
11. Dawson Canyon Formation
The Dawson Canyon Formation is present in all four well sections; with an observed
stratigraphic extent of Cenomanian - Late Campanian / ?Early Maastrichtian.
All three members are recognised; “Lower Dawson Canyon Member” (Cenomanian), Petrel
Member (Early – Middle Turonian) and “Upper Dawson Canyon Member” (Late Turonian –
Late Campanian / ?Early Maastrichtian). Highly attenuated, and unconformity bounded
sequences are recognised in both the East Wolverine G-37 and Narwhal F-99 wells.
12. Wyandot Formation
The carbonate Wyandot Formation (Late Campanian in this study) occurs in both East
Wolverine G-37 and Emerillon C-56.

18
13. Banquereau Formation
The Tertiary Banquereau Formation is recognised in both the East Wolverine G-37 and Narwhal
F-99 wells, with a stratigraphic extent of Late Paleocene, Selandian to Early Pliocene, Zanclean.
