LocationThe property is located 12 miles from Prescott, Arizona, in the town of Skull Valley at 10080v Tough Country Trail. Access is from Iron Springs Road to Contreras Road then right on Tonto to entry. Prescott, the Yavapai County seat, is about 25 minutes west of the winery and ranch. Downtown Phoenix, the State capital, is about 110 miles south via Highway 69 to Interstate 17.

DescriptionAn extraordinary piece of western history with multiple income streams, Juniper Well Ranch lies in Tonto Flats, a sub-irrigated area with abundant ground water which feeds the ancient juniper, cottonwood, black walnut, pine, blackjack, gamble oak and manzanita trees.

At an elevation of just under 5,000 feet, the Ranch is bordered by National Forest Service land and the Burlington-Santa Fe Railroad. The historic rock well house, from which the ranch gets its name, was built at the turn of the 20th century by an Arizona state senator. The ancient alligator bark juniper tree next to it welcomes visitors as they drive through the gate.

Prolific western author Frank Bonham and his wife Gloria bought the ranch in 1980 where the UCLA grad con-tinued to write and publish 50 novels and a TV script from his hilltop log home until his death in 1988. The lavish cowboy paintings used on his paperback book covers have been adapted for use as wine labels for the Ranch’s exciting new Tough Country Winery.

Frank’s son David moved to the property in 1981 and began boarding horses from the original ranch house and barn on the property. In 1990, David built the first of two log cabins to be used for guests, thus launching his ca-reer as an innkeeper. In 1993, he built the Adobe cabin from adobe bricks he made on site. Vineyard and WineryThe Ranch has planted over two acres of high-altitude vineyards including the Spanish Tempranillo, Cabernet Sauvignon, Petite Syrah, Pino Grigio, Sauvignon Blanc and Malbec. The charming Tough Country Winery pours 2009 Merlot, Tempranillo, Red Belly Red, 2008 Syrah, Grenache and Gewurztraminer from the neighboring Painted Lady Ranch for numerous visitors to the region. A wine club offers monthly events including back coun-try tours, live music, art shows, bocce ball, wine-making classes and custom crush.

Group Events and WeddingsThe Ranch’s natural setting is ideal for family reunions, corporate retreats and country weddings both large and small that take place under the natural canopy of thousand year-old junipers.
