Senior Induction Ceremony – Friday 24th February 2017
The Senior Induction is indeed a very significant day in our school calendar. It is a
time when senior students are acknowledged as true role models and senior leaders
of our school and when our duly elected school leaders are introduced to the school
community. The formality of the ceremony begins with leaders and our senior
students accepting their 2017 badges and making a commitment to uphold the
integrity of their leadership position within the school by swearing on oath, their allegiance to our
school values of respect, quality, safety and honesty. This process empowers our students to make
a commitment to themselves, their school and their community and provides a way forward for our
senior students to focus on the following obligations.
As the 2017 senior leaders of Gordonvale State High, we pledge to uphold our school values of
Respect, Quality, Honesty and Safety by honouring the responsibilities and expectations of being a
school leader. We promise to commit ourselves to being excellent role models in order to ensure the
good image of our school. We will persevere and work together for the betterment of the school

Gordonvale State High School Parents and Citizens
Our P&C is seeking your support. They would love to see you at our Annual General Meeting – March 20th.
Our Parents and Citizens Association (P&C) is a group of community-minded people, parents and citizens, who play an important deci-
sion making role within our school. They assist our school by:
(a) fostering general community interest in educational matters
(b) encouraging closer cooperation between the parents of students attending the school, other members of the community, staff and
students of the school
(c) providing advice and recommendations to the Principal of the school on issues and concerns in respect of students and the general
operation and management of the school
(d) providing or assisting in the provision of financial or other resources or services for the benefit of students of the school
(e) performing any other functions as the Minister may determine, not inconsistent with the Education (General Provisions) Act 2006.
Research has shown that parent involvement in a child’s education makes a significant contribution to the child’s success at school.
Meetings: P & C meetings are held on the third Monday of the month unless holidays demand a change. These meetings are held in
the school’s resource centre (library) starting at 6.00pm. The P&C welcome everyone. They are a very friendly group of parents and
carers who really do value each other’s input and opinion on matters and issues relevant to our school and their children’s education.
Important 2017 Date: AGM & General Meeting – March 20th
Membership: Membership is open to all parents and citizens interested in the welfare of Gordonvale State High School. Prior to the
AGM you may submit a membership form to the P&C Secretary via the office or by attending the AGM. At any time you can apply to
become a member by completing the membership form and attending a P&C meeting. Your membership will be confirmed at the end of
the meeting. You will have full voting rights from the next meeting.
Late Students
If a student is late to school without an authorised reason, the student will be detained at lunch time by the HOD of Junior and Senior
Secondary. If a student is late to a class throughout the day, the class teacher will detain the students to make up the work which was
missed. Should lateness to school or class continue, the year 8-10 students will be detained after school to make up the work which was
missed. This will be arranged with parents, who may have to organise alternative transport for students. If a senior student continues
to be late to school or classes, we may initiate Education Queensland’s Cancellation of Enrolment policy, which can end in the student no
longer attending GSHS. Similarly, if a senior student (year 11 and 12) is absent from school without an authorised reason, we may initi-
ate the Cancellation of Enrolment policy. Senior studies in particular are complex and require students attending and working in every
lesson if they are to have the best chance of academic success.
If your son/daughter is absent from school, or arrives late to school for any reason, you must make contact with the school to explain
the absence. The reason for the absence must be an authorised reason. These include student illness and medical appointments which
cannot be arranged out of school hours. Parents and Carers are responsible for ensuring enrolled students are in attendance every day.
Absences for reason such as shopping, social outings, missed the bus or babysitting siblings will not be authorised. Working together
with the best interests of our children at the centre of every decision and action we take, will provide the best possible platform for our
children to build successful futures.
Safety before and After School
Whilst we work hard to maintain a safe environment during the school day, there is a limit to what we are able to provide before and
after school regarding safety outside the school grounds. The confronting reality for us all, is that the society we live in should never be
underestimated regarding people who are a high level risk to our students. Please ensure that your child informs you of their intentions
before and after school. Many times I have receive phone calls from naturally very concerned parents, informing me that their child has
not arrived home. In response, the school, after contacting the police, convenes an emergency meeting to initiate the making of con-
tacts with the child’s friends. Fortunately, in the majority of cases, the child has simply gone to the skate park or to a friend’s place
without informing their parents. To prevent a lot of anxiety and stress, please ensure that your child clearly informs you of their where-
abouts.
Also, as we supervise the departure of students after school it is a strong reminder of the risks associated with the traffic congestion
around the school at peak times. I urge parents and carers to be patient and not to double-park or manoeuvre at fast speeds when
there are many students and vehicles in the streets around the school. Please work with us to maintain a safe pick up and drop off zone.
Parents and Carers coming to the school
Parents and/or carers entering the school grounds are to go immediately to the front Office. If a parent or carer wishes to meet with a
staff member, the staff member will be asked to come to the office area, if he/she is available. An appointment will usually need to be
made.
At no stage are parents to go directly to a staff room or an administrator’s office. So that our students and staff have confidence in
knowing that our school grounds, staffrooms and offices are safe places, I urge parents and carers to make their first contact with the
school via the front office.
Year 12 Leadership Camp—Tinaroo
On Monday 13th February to Wednesday 15th, our Year 12 Seniors had a trip over to Tinaroo Lake. Each and every student participated
in various outdoor activities that included high ropes, rock-climbing, archery, paddle boarding, kayaking and many many more.
All of the students represented Gordonvale High with exceptional behaviour, and used a respectful tone when talking to teachers and the
camp staff.
Every student left the leadership camp with a highly respectful attitude, new friends and sore muscles. Aside from that, each and every
student said that this years camp was ‘one to remember’.

All senior school students are eligible to participate in work experience. Grade 10, 11 and 12 students can schedule work experience for
one day a week or for a block of 5 days during the last week of term or school holidays as long as this does not affect their assess-
ment. It is important to be aware that a student may only complete a maximum 30 days of work experience in a school year. It is the
student’s responsibility to source the organisation and complete the paperwork with Kelly in B13. Paperwork must be submitted two
weeks prior to the intended start of work experience to ensure they can start on time.
Parents are to be aware that for a student to undertake work experience, apprenticeships or traineeships, they must have completed
the appropriate paperwork with Kelly our Pathways Officer in the Senior School Office. They will be provided with approval paperwork
before students are allowed to attend the workplace.
Furthermore, it is illegal for a school student to be paid to work during school hours. This is Government legislated. The only time a
student can receive payment for work undertaken is through authorised apprenticeship or traineeship which has to be organised and
authorised by the school. Any questions please feel free contact Kelly on [email protected].

Visiting Artist—Paul Bong Local and well known Indigenous artist, Paul Bong of the Yidinyji clan visited Gordonvale SHS Arts Department to share and impart his knowledge and experience in a Print-Making workshop. Year 12 Visual Arts and Practice students were privileged to get the hands-on, face-to-face experience with Paul who demonstrated his print-making skills. In amongst sharing his own work, Paul showed basic techniques and skills in the art of printmaking, which students are studying this term. This was an invaluable experience and was no doubt of benefit to the art students.
Roses are red, violets are blue, Be my valentine? Have a rose or 2. For the past 3 weeks, our year 12 students volunteered their time, to sell and organise for this years Valentine's Day. On Friday the 10th of February, the senior leaders did an exceptional job at organising, selling and delivering roses, balloons and teddy bears to the students and teachers at GSHS.
This years Valentine's Day was a great success and would not have been possible without the guidance of our senior mentor, Miss Craig. Everyone involved worked diligently to ensure that all students had an enjoyable Valentine's Day

Chappy News
Hello my lovelies! Gosh, it's already week 5!!!! How time does fly when you're having fun... Having said that it has been kind of a blur... Out of which some things are clearer than others... One of those being the fabulous school camps. It was such a great opportunity to get to know the students better and and see them flourish in an adventure based environment. I myself had the opportunity to get in touch with my inner warrior prin-cess and had a fantastic time getting wickedly bruised during the ar-chery and mud pit components... Good times. No sarcasm intended. In other news, Brekky Club is starting up again this week (about time) and we're once again extremely grateful to the faithful members of ALIVE Community Church and Babinda Bakery #gottalove'em for their contributions. Also a quick shout-out to IGA for their generous contribu-tion of ketchup and BBQ Sauce (like a carton full)! Thank you!!!
With much love and greetings from the chappy room—Francesca

Last week all Clontarf boys who had returned their registration forms by Friday 10th February (60 boys) were rewarded with a Good Bunch Lunch. Raffle winner Leighton Kelley picked up a fishing rod and tackle box after his name was drawn first out of the hat. Principal Jan Carr was presented with a box of chocolates by Ned Lui on behalf of the boys in appreciation for the help and support she has provided to
Clontarf. Coincidentally, there was reason for a double celebration as the event just happened to fall on Jan’s birthday. Everyone tucked into a healthy Good Bunch Lunch after the presentation and discussed the highly anticipated week five Academy room opening day activities.

At 8:30am the grade ten camp attenders were seated
in their seats ready to be transported to the tropical
Echo Creek. The bus ride felt long but shortly we
arrived at our destination, the weather was as similar
as Cairns was experiencing, rain, sun and extreme
humidity. We were greeted by the camp owner and
then settled in for the night. After unpacking, we
were called back at the eating area for lunch and then
was divided into two groups for afternoon activities.
The two activities consisted of archery and rock
climbing which also involved abseiling. Archery was
complicated for some but everyone gave it a go,
several targets were set out with each section
containing a certain amount of points. There were five groups of four, each group had their own target,
the challenge was to score as many points as possible for your team by shooting the arrow with the bow.
When the time limit was over for activity one, the groups swapped and commenced the next activity. First,
we were equipped with a harness and instructed how to climb the rock walls, four people at a time each
choose a rock wall to attempt to climb, some found it
difficult while others had the strength to climb all the
way to the top. Another challenge located on the other
side of the wall was abseiling, here not everyone was
brave enough to give it a go but however still a fair
amount gave the wall a go. After the activities were
both completed by each of the two groups, the grade
tens had an hour of free time, most people chose to
swim in the waterhole while others chilled out and
socialised. Once that hour was finished, all students and teachers was called to the
eating area for dinner, followed by dessert. Shortly after we had night time activities
which consisted of a fun challenge game which involved Cheetos, shaving cream, a
thrower and a runner. The aim of the challenge was for the runner to collect as many
Cheetos as they with one handful, the runner would then run and pass them to the thrower who would then throw them at a team
member with shaving cream on their face. This activity made a huge mess which was then cleaned up. After the challenge there was a
quiz which included many questions from different categories. Shortly after it was time for bed to then start a fresh new day.
Everyone was woken up just before 7am to have breakfast at the eating area. After breakfast, the grade tens divided back into the same
two groups and experienced two different activities, a muddy obstacle course and raft building. In the mud obstacle course, the group
was divided again into two groups, the two groups had to race throughout the muddy course with strict
rules. Round one, only one person at a time could be on an obstacle while breaking rules that meant you
would have to complete the obstacle course again to make sure it was completed right. Round two, a rope
was involved, everyone had to be touching the rope while going through each obstacle on the course while
racing the other team. Only one team member of each team could be off the rope at a time to help with
the difficulty of each obstacle course. This activity involved hard work and communication to complete the
course to the best of their ability while avoiding team penalties. Activity two was raft building, the group
still stayed in the two groups but this time the activity involved input from each team member’s ideas to
build a raft that was able to be floated across the waterhole to the other side and back while carrying a
minimum of two people. After each team
planned what style their raft was going to look
like, it was time to build. Each member put in
teamwork to finish building their raft, once
complete it was time to put the rafts to the test. Some rafts fell apart and
other rafts kept it together. After activity two was completed the grade tens
cleaned up then packed up their cabins/tents, then carried their bags down
to the eating area for lunch. After lunch the bus arrived to take us home, I’m
sure most people were exhausted on the journey back to Gordonvale State
High School, as some people slept while others relaxed by listening to music.
Overall the grade ten camp held many great experiences as well as fun and
enjoyment.
