JUNIOR SCHOOL NEWS | FRIDAY 27 OCTOBER 2017
NEWS & NOTIFICATIONS
From the Master of the Junior SchoolSing and make music from your heart to the Lord, always giving thanks to God theFather for everything, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ. Ephesians 5:20
Dear Parents and Friends of the Junior School,
There has been much to be thankful for in a wonderful week in the Junior School. The focal point was finalpreparations and then presentation of the Year 6 PYP Exhibition. Hundreds of visitors, including families, mentors and staff from all sections of the School, filled the hallways of the Junior School on Wednesday evening. The boys of Year 6 presented their learning journeys and some compelling calls to action based on theirinvestigations and discoveries around ‘Who We Are’. The highlight was the engagement between boys andguests as our students enthusiastically shared their passion and expertise in particular areas of focus. The boysof Year 6 are to be congratulated on their outstanding and mature interaction with the issues and audience. Thementors and teachers, especially Mr Borger, Mr Gaudiosi, Mr O’Young, Mrs Ormes, Miss Gratton and MrKaragiannis are especially thanked for their encouragement, guidance and assistance as the boys worked hard tobe ready for Wednesday. I also thank the Year 5 students who volunteered to assist on the night and got asneak-peek of the fun that is in store for them next year. I am sure that all who attended would agree that ourYear 6 boys have undertaken a powerful learning experience and are well-prepared to approach the challengesthat await them in high school with great confidence.
A feature of Exhibition is the call to action. In many cases, boys undertook to raise funds for a charity related totheir cause. A feature of ‘who we are’ is that we are blessed and able to be generous to others. Thank you to allwho contributed on the night. In one case, Cody Lambert initiated a can drive and approached boys in Years 5and 6 to donate. I am delighted to report that Cody has collected 329 cans which he will pass onto the ReverendBill Crews of The Exodus Foundation over the weekend. Throughout November, the Junior School communitywill have the opportunity to contribute to Anglicare’s Christmas Toys and Tucker Drive. Our charity leaderswill address the boys at assemblies next week and ask every family to make a contribution of toys or books (tobe placed unwrapped under the Office Christmas tree) and/or canned items (placed in the corridor opposite theChess board) to be passed onto Anglicare for distribution to families over Christmas. Further guidance iscommunicated by Miss Gratton and Mr Brigden elsewhere in this newsletter. Please help your boys to supportthis cause.
Wednesday was a special morning for the K-2 boys, staff and many parents who joined us for the running, jumping, kicking, tugging and throwing events that were a feature of the K-2 Track & Field Carnival. Theseopportunities form the basis for our boys’ future involvement in House and sporting events in the coming years.Thank you, Mr Robinson, for organising so many fun activities and to all the parents who joined in the fun andsupported their sons.
Today, you will have received notification about how to access your son’s second Interim Report for thissemester, identifying specific areas of achievement and an area for future growth in English and Mathematics. You are encouraged to read this in conjunction with work samples and student self-reflections that have eitherbeen sent home or made available via Seesaw.
Student leadership was addressed with Year 5 on Tuesday, particularly the nature of servant-heartedleadership, as reflected by Jesus, in placing the needs of others before self. Year 5 are considering the variousopportunities for leadership in the Junior School and as they nominate themselves for consideration in a varietyof roles for 2018. Application forms and letters are due by Wednesday of Week 5. Next year’s captains and houseleaders are announced at Speech Day. It is important to note that all boys in Year 6 take on the responsibility of

being leaders within our School and will have a role in which they will serve next year.
Next week is Pastoral Care Week at Trinity, and our students in Years 2, 4 & 6 will be undertaking the annualPrimary Wellbeing Survey. Years 5 and 6 will attend a Brainstorming Productions performance at school on Fridayand learn strategies to resist the barrage of negative advertising that leads to unhealthy behaviours. Year 5 willopen their doors on Tuesday morning for parents, family and friends to participate in an experience thatculminates their most recent Unit of Inquiry. We hope to see many visitors from 9am. On Thursday, all areinvited to the Auxiliary Annual General Meeting to be held in the Junior School at 9am.
I again remind parents of the importance of safety around drop-off and pick-up of students. In particular, parents are urged to use the carpark instead of arranging to meet students on the surrounding streets. Whilst thecarpark does become congested at pick-up times, we ask you to us it because students are supervised. They donot have to negotiate traffic on external streets and, importantly, they are in our care should you be delayed. Please use this link if you need to remind yourself of the traffic guidelines the School has in place to assistparents.
All the best to Year 3 with their Friday Afternoon Sports Programme this afternoon. Parents are asked toensure that boys are picked up punctually at 4.30pm. Our fingers are also crossed that the weather will permit allgames to be on tomorrow morning. Good luck, boys!

Kindergarten Concept“Concept-based curricula are more effective than topic-based curricula, for the worldof today and tomorrow, because they take teaching and learning to a higher level asstudents analyse, synthesise and generalise from facts to deeper understanding.”(Erikson, 2008)
The Primary Years Programme encourages the young men in Kindergarten to think about ‘big ideas’ rather thanthinking of subject specific content, helping them to make sense of the world around them. Through play, inquirybased learning and storytelling Kindergarten have been looking into what ‘perspective’ means. The boys enjoyedlistening to many fairy tales throughout the ‘How We Express Ourselves’ unit of inquiry and spinning their ownstories from a different character’s perspective... imagining how the Big Bad Wolf felt in ‘The Three Little Pigs’ orhow Aladdin felt as he flew around on his magic carpet. The boys were so excited to listen to each other, tell anew story and act it out. It was amazing how each boy's story was different to the next. This was a great way torelate the concept back to our everyday lives, such as on the playground, in our writing, during our class newstime and becoming accepting of other people’s opinions, interpretations and points of view.

SPORT
Sportsmaster | Junior SchoolThe rain on Friday prevented 3 outdoor fixtures at Bressington Park from going ahead but all else ran toprogram. We had strong wins in all four Year 4 basketball matches at Grammar St. Ives and some strongtussles at The Preparatory School in 1sts – 8ths, with the ledger square at 4 wins apiece. It was nice to see the10th V have a strong win against Scots also at The Preparatory School. Tee Ball under Mrs Richards' capablehands continues to do well and the team bettered their opponents 24-12 also away at Grammar St. Ives.
We played one or two boys short in a few matches at the weekend due to illness. If you are sure your son cannotplay due to sickness or injury, please let me know ASAP so the coach can be alerted and an alternative option canpotentially be arranged.
A reminder to check the Wet Weather Line (1300 788 477) if weather is at all doubtful this weekend. Pleasechoose the Junior School option 3, then 1 for sport. Bressington Park is dry as of this morning so finger’s crossed!
Congratulations to Cameron van Der Goot (5M) who came 8th in the state in PSSA Track and Field lastweekend in the Under 10 Shot Put and to Oscar Fryer (6G) who came 23rd in Under 11 200m, in a hotlycontested field at SOPAC.
The K-2 Track & Field carnival was held on Wednesday at school with the boys engaging in a variety of funand novelty events on Number 2 oval. The boys had a go at seven different events and had an enjoyable time insteamy conditions.
Year 3 Rugby - Friday afternoon sessions commence today and run for the next four Fridays, October 27th,November 3rd, November 10th and November 17th from 3.10-4.30 pm. Boys must be picked up by 4.35pm atthe latest or they will be taken to OSH Club.

Junior School HampersAgain, this year, we are asking families if they can contribute items towards hampers that will be part of theJunior School’s contribution to the Trinity Family Fiesta.
In a bit of a change from previous years, most of the hampers provided by the Junior School, Prep School andMiddle/Senior School Houses will be sold at a Hamper Stall rather than being part of the auction.
Each year group will have a theme for their hampers (see list below).
Please send in items that we can use to make some fabulous hampers to sell. The items must be new andunused.
Themes for items for your hampers
PreK and Kindergarten – Beach and Outdoor ActivitiesYear 1 – ChristmasYear 2 – Gourmet FoodYear 3 – Kids Activities, Books, ToysYear 4 – Pamper Packs (for men and women)Year 5 – BBQ PacksYear 6 – Homewares, Cooking, Entertaining
There will be boxes in the classrooms from Monday 13th November for collection of the items.
Ideally, we would like all items to have been sent in by the morning of Monday 27th November.
Thanks so much for your help
