walk to school
Walk to school and safe routes to school This section is packed with quizzes, puzzles and information about walking to school. This material will help you to develop your own campaign to encourage pupils and parents to walk to school.
You can carry out a survey of how pupils travel to school by using the Travel Survey sheet. Once you have collected the information, you may like to show the results in a graph format. You could then display it on your notice board or even do a presentation in assembly.
There are a variety of leaflets available for this campaign. Please see samples sent with this information. You may like to think of some ideas for encouraging pupils and parents to walk to school.

What is ‘Safer Routes to School’?
Safer Routes to School is a partnership between Casualty Reduction and the School Travel Plan Team, schools, governors, parents, pupils and others in the community. They work together to improve the safety of children on their journeys to and from school by using a variety of measures including road safety education, traffic calming, improved crossing facilities, and environmental improvements.
What are the aims?
* To provide a safer environment for children to walk and cycle to and from school by reducing road danger along the route
* To increase the number of walked or cycled trips to and from school
* To involve schools, parents, children and drivers in improving safety on routes around schools through a process of education, training and publicity
The School Travel Plan Team can provide a map of the school area to enable pupils to identify their routes to school. For more information please contact the Road Safety Team on 01803 207677.
Walk to school
Walking to school is good for you! It’s a great way to get all-round exercise and to keep fit.
We need to encourage more pupils to walk to school (with an adult if they are too young to travel alone).
Information
Assembly plan - walking to school We need to get all pupils to think about the way that they get to and the route that they take on the way to school.
What should you say in your school assembly?
What will you need to get across:
* Who the competition winners were

Always remember to SMILE
On the next page there is a script that you could use if you cannot think of anything to say. You could just use the script as a guide and develop your own ideas.
