    = SHAPE SHIFTER+SHAPE COLOR

    Saturday, December 10, 11

A shapeshifter is someone that thinks and sees in shapes and colors. Shapes can besimple or complex, but one of the most important skills a shapeshifter must learn ishow to adapt those shapes into complex environments.

Looking back on last semester, there were a couple of key projects that helped shapethe overall direction of my work this semester.

One of those key projects was the Design Is.. campaign from type II. It was the firstinstance of designing on multiple platforms. One of the platforms that sparked myinterest was motion.

    7 DEADLY SINSPRIDE EXPLORATION

    Saturday, December 10, 11

In the extension of my 7 Deadly Sins project from Sophomore year, I developed a lovefor motion and working with multiple channels. Setting my own objectives to frame myexploration and taking the initiatives to learn new techniques like stop motion and newsoftware like cinema 4D were major learning points in this process.

    UNION STATIONINTERACTIVE TIMELINE

    Saturday, December 10, 11

In my collaboration with Jessie Ren I was able to explore user interaction and motion. One of the main obstacles we faced was working with limited content and devising acreative solution to create an engaging narrative while maintaing a purposeful journey.

    THE IS ALWAYS HOPEDESIGN INTERVENTION

    Saturday, December 10, 11

User interaction can also exist in an environmental sense.

In my collaboration with Ivan, we developed a flexible way finding system using aguerrilla marketing technique. Ivan and I saw the importance of language to our

audience and sought out to develop an open system using a simple abstract visuallanguage. This was my first exploration into this realm of design. It has taught me notto limit myself to simply digital or printed artifacts.

However, the most important thing I learned from this project was trusting yourself andtaking a risk with the direction of the project. Understanding that its okay to not knowthe outcome, but having the confidence to put it out there regardless.

    VANGUARD JAZZ ORCHESTRAFOLLEY POSTER

    Saturday, December 10, 11

Shape shifter also use shapes in a more representational manner.

In my Vanguard Jazz Orchestra poster, research played an essential role both visuallyand audibly in order to represent the band accurately. I learned how shapes can be

symbolic, representational and expressive simultaneously. While the figurescommunicate the concept of the big band, the rendering method expresses theirmusical style and energy. This project also taught me how to consider designing formultiple types of audiences.

    TENDER BUTTONSBOOK VERSION

    Saturday, December 10, 11

Language can also be complex through typography.

During the Tender Buttons project my exploration of language became more apparentin comparison to previous semesters. This project taught me the importance of

preliminary research in order to approach the text in the appropriate context. I learnedto communicate language in a simultaneous and expressive manner through materialsand type as well as translating the idea into a motion piece.

    TENDER BUTTONSBOOK VERSION

    Saturday, December 10, 11

In the motion component of the project, one of the objectives was to remaintypographically dominant. However, I took the risk in incorporating a strong imageelement to reinforce the language and allude to the color shifts in my book. Thisproject helped me understand how working with multiple channels can reinforce and

    enhance language.

    PIERRE KOENIGLIVING WITH STEEL

    Saturday, December 10, 11

Lastly, in my redesign of Pierre Koenigs Living with Steel, I learned the importance ofdeveloping an engaging experience for the viewer. One way I enhanced the experiencewas by forming the copy into a shape that would constantly shift on an organic grid toreinforce the environments interaction in Koenigs process. I learned to develop rules

for my system that would allow for overall cohesion.
