St. Mary’s 2013 Hall of Fame

The St. Mary’s Hall of Fame acknowledges St. Mary’s Alumni and devoted friends who have exemplified St. Mary’s Pillars for Success: Catholic, Excellence, Integrity and Respect. Members of the St. Mary’s Hall of Fame are acknowledged and celebrated as testaments of a St. Mary’s education.

Inductees are chosen for their service to the St. Mary’s community and their altruistic generosity toward others. Their lifetimes are marked by their striving toward excellence in whichever profession, vocation, sport, endeavor or other calling to which he or she answers.

St. Mary’s High School honored six distinguished alumni with induction to our Hall of Fame on June 5 at Spinelli’s in Lynnfield. We are blessed to remember our inductees of the past and honor our newest members of the St. Mary’s Hall of Fame: A. James Lynch ‘45 (posthumously), John J. Schickling ‘57, Albert V. DiVirgilio ‘59, Dr. Cheryl L. Meninno ‘74, Mark M. McGuire ‘75 and Lisa J. Nerich ‘83.

Inductee bios and photos are available online.

Commencement The St. Mary’s Class of 2013 has been featured in the Lynn Journal and will be a part of the Daily Item’s 2013 Commencement section available in this Saturday’s paper. Congratulations again!

Additional professional photos have been added to our galleries in Commencement Central. Parents, don’t forget to order your official Commencement 2013 DVD of the ceremony, filmed by Party Video Productions! The order form is attached.

Freshman Honors Biology students went on a field trip to the Museum of Science on Monday, June 3. Students watched indoor bolts spark explorations into electric charges such as lightning, and storm safety was discussed with the beginning of tropical storm and hurricane season. Students were also able to think like an engineer as they designed a puzzle message that resulted in movement from a robotic device. The trip reinforced many of the concepts students learned throughout the year and allowed them to see the fun side of science! Photos are available online.

Digital Citizenship

Please keep an eye out for mailed packets including a Digital Citizenship letter explaining the school store and book buyback transition process. Please continue to keep an eye out for notifications regarding the purchasing of eBooks and iPad applications for the 2013-14 academic year.

We recommend that parents purchase iPads for their students before the summer begins. We will be holding sessions over the summer for parents and students to make sure that by the start of school their iPads are ready to go.

If you have any comments or concerns please reach out to Dean of Instructional Technology and Integrated Curriculum Artie Gribbins: [email protected] or 781-586-2010.

As we move into a new school year, there are a number of exciting changes that will impact procedures at St Mary’s.

School Store

Our Digital Citizenship Initiative for the upcoming school year is on schedule to begin next fall with 90 to 95 percent of the current classroom text books available as eBooks. With so many classroom books available as eBooks, we have decided to transition the school store to an online presence at the end of this school year. Any textbooks or workbooks required for next year can be purchased directly online. Links will be posted to our website at stmaryslynn.com.

With this transition, the purchase of St. Mary’s apparel and uniforms will become an online process. We are currently working with a few vendors and will communicate the site information to you as soon as it is available. The existing inventory of school apparel in the school store will be available for purchase at a discount until the end of this school year.

There will also be a change in the payment process for school fees and other activities (e.g. class trips) starting in 2013–14. In the past, school fees were paid as part of the textbook purchasing process at the St. Mary’s school store. In the future, we are moving to an online payment process that is more secure and more convenient for you by using the FACTS system. Currently the FACTS system has only been used for tuition payments but we are going to expand this to include all payments going forward. This will allow for payments to happen outside of school hours and provide a better tracking process for the school. This will require that all families sign up and use the FACTS systems for payments to St Mary’s High School beginning in July 2013.

Below is a list of the fees and payments that will go through the FACTS system:

• Computer Science fee (Marian Division only)• Marian Division Moving On Fee (Grade 8)• Art Fees (for Grades 6, 7 & 10 and option for Grade 12)• Keyboarding Fee (Grade 9)• College Fair Transportation fee (Grade 11)• Yearbook fee (Grades 11 & 12)• Testing Fee (all grades except for 12)• Graduation fee (Grade 12)• Magazine fee (Grade 12) • Planning Handbook (All grades)• Combination lock (only locks allowed on campus; school has combination and key to open if needed)

Book Buyback Process

The annual Book Buyback process is going to change as well. St. Mary’s will no longer be involved in the process directly; we are arranging for third-party book companies to come to St. Mary’s to handle the process this year. As in the past, the process will occur in June, but the decisions to purchase books and any payments that result from these decisions will come directly from the participating companies. St. Mary’s will have no involvement or input in any steps of the process. All questions about the process will need to be directed to the companies involved.

As we finalize procedures we will continuously post news to STMARYSLYNN.COM. Stay tuned!

As we transition to i-Pads electronic editions of the summer reading books are not required.

Summer reading books can be borrowed from your local library or can be purchased in paperback editions or ordered online from booksellers such as Barnes and Noble or Amazon.

ST. MARY'S SUMMER READING FORM

As your teacher for the new school year, I can't wait to get to know you, what you think, and how you feel about

things. One way that will help me learn about you is to find out your personal reactions to what you read.

Using the heading below and the instructions and examples given, complete your double-entry response journals on

loose-leaf paper. You need to keep a journal for each book that you read this summer. You need a minimum of ten

excerpts from each book you read.

These excerpts should span the entire length of the book. They should cover the beginning, middle and end of the

book. Obviously, your personal responses should be the longest part of each entry.

These journals will be collected by the various subject teachers on the first full day of classes. These jOUrnAls

Acceptable

I chose this passage because I could definitely picture

the sloop in my mind. I could see the boat barely moving

in the water as the tide was going out. Also, I love the

author’s choice of words like loitering, this really makes

the sail seem as if it’s just hanging around, the way a flag
