Leather jacket, flying electric V guitar, big wondering eyes and dashing rock n roll enthusiasm all strike you when you first meet Nikita Menezes. She is exactly how you’d expect an ingenious, restless rebel to be like. Since 2010, the Goan -Dubai based musician has been known for her crazy antics & mad vocal skills, with her first band - Beneath The Remains. Now with the release of her self-produced, first solo album “Jagged Little Pill” in which she brings together the talents of her amazing vocals, witty lyrics & guitar skills, Nikita has much to celebrate . Coupled with the success in producing one hell of an album this month, Nikita is also enjoying winning the coveted title of ‘Dubai’s Hottest Local Musician 2011’ & is scheduled to play a number of gigs this month, in the U.A.E. JunGuy Fever sat down with Nikita this month, to talk music, success and her future ventures. Here’s what she had to say:

Your fame & popularity is off the charts. Everyone seems to have an opinion about you these days. Did you ever envision your life this way?Totally! Just kidding. I had no idea. A year ago, I found myself in a personal slump. It was one of those unfortunate situations where nothing was really going wrong, but nothing was really going right either. So while taking a walk down the ‘The Walk’ at Jumeirah Beach Residence, chain-smoking and desperately looking for some kind of answer, I come across this flyer on the ground, which said “Looking for a vocalist to join our band (Beneath The Remains). Auditions taking place at ‘The Fridge”. Two months later, I was working the local circuit with BTR & a year later, I was flying solo.

You just released your debut album ‘Jagged Little Pill’? Tell us a little bit about it & the concept behind it’s eccentric style?‘Jagged Little Pill’ is my baby, my year long endeavor to produce my very own creative nugget, to share with the rest of the world. The album unfolds a story in motion, that slowly peels away the layers & unveils various an amalgamation of human emotions...raw, messy, addictive human emotions like hate, lust, sadness, love & dejection. The concept behind the style of ‘Jagged Little Pill’ is that it solely steams from my life story & is displayed through sound using my emotions. These emotions are then expressed by my electric guitar & other instruments that sounds like the feeling.

How does it feel to have won the title of ‘Dubai’s Hottest Local Musician 2011’?It’s a fantastic feeling. I’m quite flattered & thankful. But to be honest, I was a bit skeptical & amused when I first found out that I was nominated. After winning, I freaked out...in a good way of course. It has definitely given me another platform to share my music with more people & meet other artisits on the scene. The award ceremony was fabulous, my trophy looks fabulous & I feel fabulous.

When did you first discover your interest in creating music & how would you describe your music? Well, having been brought up in a home where music was the cradle, the blanket and the mother tongue, to me home is music & the first place I discovered & cultivated my love for music. When I found it, I truly found something that dictated the literature of my life. The songwriter inside me found pure bliss and I’ve been writing, sing-ing, performing and fulfilled ever since. My music combines the sensibilities and nuances of classic rock & roll with alternative genres of Western Music.

Who are some of your main influences?Definitely the crazy, old school rock-ers like Guns N Roses, Def Leppard, Poison, Aerosmith, Blue Oyster Cult, Black Sabbath, George Thorogood and The Destroyers, The Cure, ZZ Top, Jimi Hendrix, The Rolling Stones, The Ramones, The Vines, Kiss, & Deep Purple. Of course, I do also indulge myself in varied music styles from different genres...but there’s nothing like old school rock and roll...those guys were badass.

What is the driving force behind you lyrics? Which song are you most proud of?The driving force behind my lyrics is

just my passion to express myself and my feelings. I believe that lyrics need to mean something to me first, before I sell my songs to my audience. It really does help me to connect & strike the right chord with my audience. The song that I most proud of, I haven’t recorded it yet(wink)...hahaha...but from ‘Jagged Little Pill’ I would have to say ‘Ironic’ & ‘Head Over Feet’. No explanation needed...just listen to the songs.

When I’ve seen you perform it seems that you’re pretty comfortable playing solo in front of a crowd. What was your first solo performance experi-ence like and how has your comfort level changed over time? The first solo gig I played was at ‘The Music Shack’, a quaint little venue in Goa’s Margao district . The room was full of musicians guarding their instruments, scanning the room discreetly and exchanging silent smiles with their peers. But what really caught my eye was the audience. Unlike Dubai, where people are only there because they need somewhere to hang out for the evening, these people were there specifically for the music. The doubts about my abilities always surface up before a gig, but this time they left me feeling invigorated. This time it was the quality of my music that mattered, not just my presence. My set was not just going to be heard, it was going to be

listened to. And that meant the applause, the ‘woohoo’-ing and the thanks after the set actually meant something. The gig turned out to be amazing & just left me wanting more.

What are your thoughts on Dubai’s burgeoning music scene? Well, the local musicians are starting to express their individual character and personality a lot more in their music. You can definitely hear it in the music, it’s really great. The future holds great prospects for local indie musicians. They are all so young. With youth (not saying that I’m a wise old woman just yet), anything is possible and opportunities are boundless.

Any words of advice to aspiring musicians in Dubai? Your work is going to fill a large part of your life, and the only way to be truly satisfied is to do what you believe is great work. And the only way to do great work is to love what you do. Even if music isn’t your scene/thing anymore, keep looking regardless & don’t settle. You’ll know when you’ve found it.

“Reach Out & Touch Faith ” - The Mantra I Live By..

Page 22: JunGuy Fever

Each company offers a number of fresh features that bring the two warring desktop environments close together when it comes to ease of use and raw performance. But there’s a difference between capability and execution. For testing, we considered the 13.3-inch Apple Macbook Pro (2.26-GHz Intel Core 2 Duo processor, 2GB of RAM, Nvidia GeForce 9400M GPU, 5,400-rpm, 160GB hard drive) against an identically configured 13.3-inch Dell XPS Studio 13, so we could concentrate on the benefits and disadvantages of each operating system. The standard specifications were compared in terms of boot time, battery life, computing power, graphics performance, and a host of other factors.

Windows 7 boasted to bringing swifter boots to PC’s, but the new OS can be just as slow as its predecessor Vista. You may find some high-end Windows 7 laptops that start up in less than 60 seconds but most hover above the one-minute mark. In order to gauge the operating system’s computing prowess, we used the results from system applications, which measure CPU and RAM performance, which indicated a higher rating for Overall system performance in Snow leopard. Apple has chosen to push technology forward by only offering a 64-bit version of Snow Leopard; there won’t be a 32-bit version. Taking advantage of 64-bit technology will mean snappier performance, compatibility with 32-bit

programs, and support for a theoretical 16 billion GB of RAM. Windows 7 is offered in both 32- and 64-bit varieties on the same disc.In terms of battery life the Max OS trumps Windows 7 in all aspects but to be fair the endurance gulf is mainly due to Apple’s long-lasting batteries rather than Snow leopard itself. Graphics performance in Mac’s are featured by Nvidia GPU’s that support graphics accelerated software such as Flash 10.1 and Windows boast a wider variety of graphics cards such as ATI Radeon, Nvidia hybrids and Generic Intel Cards. We declare Windows 7 the victor based on the number of graphicsaccelerated applications and products available to suit consumer needs.

Apple has taken major steps to make the Mac a better fit for corporate and home environments, which we believe is a more vital development than Microsoft’s Device Stage. Ultimately, Mac OS X Snow Leopard is a far more streamlined operating system than Windows 7. It boots faster, has excellent software, and boasts outstanding performance. If you can swing the much-debated Mac Tax, you’ll find that Snow Leopard is a very compelling option. If you’re a gamer or need very specific Windows-only programs, Windows 7 is enticing, but you can run the OS in Snow Leopard using Boot Camp. The only downside is that you have to purchase Windows 7 separately in addition to a relatively pricey MacBook (the cheapest model starts at AED 3500).

On the flip side, a well-equipped Win-dows machine can be purchased for under AED 2300, even though you won’t have the ability to install Mac OS X. Overall, Windows PCs are great for bargain hunt-ers, as well as media mavens who want to play games or watch Blu-ray movies. Those who want to actually create con-tent, however, will find far more intuitive tools out of the box with the bundled Mac iLife ‘09 suite.

Mac vs. Windows Laptops: So what does AED 3500 Dhs get you?Apple’s been criticized a lot lately for charging premium computer prices during a recession. In its defense, the brand name ensures to deliver value with its computers. In my experience, with a few nits aside, Mac laptops are imaginatively designed, well built, and a pleasure to use. Macs aren’t subjected to all the viruses and malware aimed at Windows computers. You can run Windows on a Mac. The question that one should be asking is: What would I get if I spent AED 3,500 on a MacBook, and what would the same amount of money buy me in a reasonably similar Windows laptop? That’s the focus.

In this article we will compare the least expensive 13.3 inch Macbook (the white model) and two Windows consumer lap-tops that also have 13.3 inch screen: The HP Pavilion dv3510nr and the Dell In-spiron 13. All priced around AED 3,500.

Mac vs. Before buying a laptop, many shoppers start with one fundamental question: Am I a Mac or a PC? Ad campaigns for Apple and Microsoft sling mud in both directions, without providing a clear picture of each platform’s pros and cons. So, we weighed these two operating systems with a head-to-head comparison of Mac OS X Snow Leopard and Windows 7.

www.junguyfever.ae 18

Page 23: JunGuy Fever

vs. Windows OS

The Wrap UpIf you’ve got AED 3,500 to spend, there’s no question: Your dirham will go farther, in terms of specs and features, with the Dell or HP notebooks. The white MacBook seems a bit stale, in terms of tech specs, especially compared to the more expensive, refreshed Macbook line Apple introduced last fall.Of course, the comparisons made here aren’t the whole story by any stretch. For instance, Mac laptops are still easier and more pleasurable to use than Windows laptops. You can’t attribute a figure to that. Beyond the two Windows systems mentioned, there are countless other worthy models costing the same or less. Example: The Lenovo Ideapad Y530

- Charles Fernandes

Screen and Graphics ProcessorAll three laptops have a glossy, wide-screen 13-inch display. The HP’s is also LED backlit, which tends to be brighter than a traditional LCD. The Inspiron 13 has an Intel Graphics Media Accelerator X3100, which is part of the laptop’s system chip set and relies on the computer’s main memory. Apple’s white MacBook features the NVIDIA GeForce 9400M integrated graphics processor with 256MB of shared memory. The HP laptop looks like the winner here, as it uses the NVIDIA GeForce 9300 GS discrete graphics system with 512MB of dedicated graphics memory.Generally speaking, a discrete graphics system provides smoother video and graphics than a graphics chip set that’s integrated with the computer’s system chip set and memory.

Networking and WeightAll three laptops included Ethernet ports and support for 802.11n wireless networking and Bluetooth. None offered built-in 3G cellular data networking. There wasn’t much difference in their weights, either; all weighed 4.6 to 5 pounds, according to the manufacturers.

Other FeaturesThere are lots of other differences between the MacBook and the two Windows laptops. A few examples:• The MacBook and the Inspiron 13 offer two USB ports, compared to three for the Pavilion.• The MacBook includes Apple’s iLife 09, a terrific suite of integrated applications including iMovie (video editing), iPhoto (photo editing), GarageBand (audio editing), iWeb (for creating Web pages) and iDVD (for burning DVDs). Though the Windows laptops offer software applications for many of those functions, none is an integrated suite, like iLife.•The MacBook doesn’t ship with office productivity software. The HP Pavilion and Dell In-spiron 13 both come with Microsoft Works, a basic suite.

THE TRUTH ABOUT

In this issue’s ‘Monthly Rant’ I felt the need to express my views on all the general questions guys normally have about women. For as long as I’ve had guy friends I’ve rarely ever heard them whine or complain anything ‘girl related’ but when they do they always mention how complex women are and how they find it difficult to understand them. My reaction to these statements is always the same (with a dumbfounded look on my face) - How is it SO hard to understand women?

We are the easiest to understand. If you make a mistake, what do you do? Get us some flowers and chocolates and all is forgiven, what is so hard to comprehend? The only sad thing for a man is that he has to deal with our constant mood swings and changes in attitudes, one minute we’re happy the next we’re sad. Here’s a classic example, you say you’re going to call us and you don’t and that, pretty much, is enough to upset us (sorry guys but that’s just how we were created).

Women analyze each and every single thing you do or say in detail (even if you were joking about it). We are very serious when it comes to our feelings; if something isn’t working out we’re not going to waste our time and effort on it. We think about the future, whereas men don’t think at all. For most guys, the only ‘thinking’ they ever do (when it comes to women) is how they are going to get with the woman they like (and that chase doesn’t even last long). If you can’t get the person you want, you’ll probably move on. Women on the other hand will pine over one guy, till they find someone who can measure up to the ‘one’. In my opinion, the one doesn’t really exist, however every woman is different. Some are shallow and materialistic, whilst others want someone who can make them truly happy without having to put on fake smiles.

The sad part is that, most men, are attracted to the shallow and materialistic women, they fail to see the women right in front of them who would do anything to make them happy. The women who are in the ‘friend zone’. Yes, it exists for us too. Men feel like they’re the only ones who get placed into that group, but I’ve met many guys who are so blind they can’t even tell when a girl likes them. After all, nice guys finish last. We aren’t the same, after all ‘men are from Mars and women from Venus’ but it’s ourdifferences that draw us to each other. Imagine a world where you know what every woman wants and what she is thinking, where’s the fun in that?

One thing I do believe in though, is happy endings (yes, I am aware of how cheesy that sounds but it’s true).

I feel like everything that happens in life, happens for the best. If something with someone (or even in your career or just life in general) doesn’t work out, don’t feel bad for long. Take it as a sign that you’ve ended a chapter in your life to make way for something much bigger and better, something that will definitely bring a smile on your face. After all, there is no point dwelling on the past because there’s really nothing you can do to alter it.

That’s enough non information for one day. Until next time. Also, ‘Blackout’ by Muse is a really good song and worth a listen!

A ‘Dog called demolition’ is Rankin’s attempt at something more science fictional and dark, blended with his

usual trademark of bizarre and wacky humor. The book has a very serious feel to it but the humor is still

prevalent and in abundance.

The books starts of with the story of an old chum named Sam Sprout who has lived a life of sheer misfortune

and is breathing out his final days. But the main plot is actually about a young man by the name of Danny

Orion, hailing from Brentford, and a dog called ‘Demolition’ who is his alter ego in every sense of the word.

The concept revolves around dealing with our own personal demons that often drives us to do things that

are otherwise unthinkable in our normal frame of mind such as murder.

Avid Rankin fans would agree that although it might not be his best book to date, being the 13th book published

at the time, it was one of his most powerful and intriguing works at that time due to the fact that it was a

colossal blend of humor, terror and fantasy all laid out into one hell of a novel.

The book also consists of hilarious and well timed in-jokes and gags that guarantee a loud laugh upon reading

as well appearances from different characters of other books. Basically everything you’ve been accustomed

to from the author. The chapters open with a delightful if not food for thought quote and a short poem that is

deceivingly clever. The book has various sub plots and reiterates the fact that it has no beginning and no end,

just a soundtrack.

On the downside, this is not the type of book for someone relatively new to Robert Rankin to pick up as it

would possible confuse and leave them bewildered of his unorthodox approach. Fans of Rankin on the other

hand would definitely make this book one to hold on to as it provides them with everything they expect of

this great author.

It’s hard to explain everything that this show has going for it, and if the first three seasons are any indication, we

are in for a fantastically brilliant series. The show is about a depressed and reckless writer (Hank Moody) who’s

out of work due to a serious writer’s block caused by his long-term girlfriend (and the love of his life) when she

leaves him.

What ensues is a long series of flings, booze addled nights and a thousand other mistakes that only keep driving

her farther away every time she leans back in towards him. It is a remarkable balance between love, regret,

loneliness, debauchery and moral value, the likes of which I have rarely seen. Duchovney’s character has this

amazing combination of ‘The Devil may care’ attitude (stemming from his obvious depression and regret over his

ex and several other things), conceit, vulnerability, bitterness, and misogyny, while simultaneously being utterly

moral and upstanding, especially in his desire to do the right thing for his ex-girlfriend and daughter.

It is a remarkably refreshing change from the usual ‘cool-parent’ liberal permissive attitude that one has come to

expect in these situations. And coming from a character like Hank (Duchovney) its especially redeeming. He is an

amazingly complex character, and Duchovney pulls it off flawlessly. The writing is nearly perfect, as is the casting

and acting. The soundtrack is as brilliant and evocative as anything I’ve experienced thus far in television or film,

and it all comes together in a hilarious, poignant and extremely entertaining package.

Drama-laden AnfieldA Review of Liverpool’s 2010-2011 Season

www.junguyfever.ae 38

Out of the UEFA champions league and securing a seventh place finish from last season, a fresh new start was eagerly awaited by the Anfield faithful at the beginning of the season. A new manager in the form of Roy Hodgson (ex Fulham), was bought in to replace the Inter Milan bound Rafael Benitez. Much was expected from the man who guided his Fulham team to the finals of the Europa League last season.

Anfield, which was once referred to as a for-tress began to look like a joke at this point and at around this point, new owner, John Henry, owner of the Fenway Sports Group and the Boston Red Sox, gave into the fans cry for the sacking of Roy Hodgson and replaced him with Kop hero and idol, Kenny ‘The King’ Dalglish. Just the very presence of the evergreen charismatic character that is Kenny lifted the gloom away from the red side of Liverpool.

His first order of action was selling the unhappy prolific Liverpool striker, Fer-nando Torres, to Chelsea and using the money to buy two hot young prospects in Luis Suarez (Ajax) and Andy Caroll (Newcastle FC). Change was inevitable and it showed as the same Liverpool team looked a different class as they recorded famous wins over Manches-ter United, Chelsea and Manchester City.

It started to look like it was paying off as he managed to convince star striker Fernando Torres to stay for another season and bought in the likes of Joe Cole (Chelsea), Paul Konchesky (Fulham), Christian Poulsen (Juventus) and Raul Meireles (FC Porto) to form a formidable team that could challenge for the title. Few would have guessed though how miserably his tenure at Liverpool would end with losses to arch rivals Manchester United and Everton, and a host of mid table to lower end clubs like Stoke City, Blackpool, Blackburn Rovers and Newcastle leaving the Reds languish at 19th on the table at one point.

Liverpool, at this point, still have one game left to finish off the season and whether they do secure the final Europa League position or not, one can safely say that they have endured a season with tremendous lows and sporadic moments of highs. Overall, a Liverpuldian could take joy in the fact that Kenny has been given a long overdue contract that keeps him at the club for 3 years along with his encour-agement of the use of youngsters like John Flannagan, Jack Robinson, Jonjo Shelvery and Jay Spearing to steer them back into the position they so rightfully belong.

A Video Game You Might Have

Missed

www.junguyfever.ae 39

FIFA 2011Compared to previous editions of FIFA, EA Games have come up with a version like no other. Fifa 11 is probably in competition with its own predecessors as much as it is with Konami’s new game. FIFA 08, 09 and 10 were arguably the best football games of the year they were released.

Fifa has come a long way ever since the series began in 1993. If you already have a copy of the latest Fifa 11, you would have noticed how realistic the game is. In this version you can actually create you own virtual player with his own kit and skills, as well as sign him up at legendary football clubs which pay handsome weekly wages. And of course, with that contract, comes a league. You will also be shown the statistics on your virtual player and what his value is. Skills like passing, shooting, tackling and dribbling between the players feel a lot weightier than normal. The game has gone so far in to detail that you receive emails from your manager, coach and other players in your team.

Furthermore, you can also play your career as a manager or a player manager where, it is you that makes decisions for the club. In other modes, you can take on the role of being the Goalkeeper, which has usually been controlled by the computer in all other versions of the game. Pro Passing has also been introduced in the game. This will determine the users own accuracy with the analogue stick / control pad. Of course, passing the ball around (with skill) will all depend on each players skills and accuracy. It might also be worth noting that the goal celebrations have been improved drastically. You can now do backflips, somersaults and also funny dances all with the touch of a button after you score a goal.

With its depth of customisations, fantastic gameplay, superb visuals and its great online and career modes FIFA 11 is about the most complete package fans of football video games could want.

Which may

probably not

be true,

considering that the band with the self titled album is the

brainchild of Dave Grohl (Nirvana, Foo Fight-

ers), Josh

Homme (Queens

of the

Stone

Age, Kyuss)

and John

Paul Jones

(Led

Zeppelin). A super group in every sense of th

e word

considering the fact that each of th

e members’ bands

has made millions in sales worldwide, not to

mention

the fact that their bands were also revolutionaries in

their perspective genre and era. In

a day and age where

unknown indie musicians are rocking out the charts with

quirky lyrics and intentionally misspelled titles, Them

Crooked Vultures, breathes an air of th

eir own stoner/

experimental ro

ck feel into the world of m

usic. From

the barraging of staccato laden riffs of Josh Homme

and the demolition of th

e drum kit by Dave Grohl, in

songs like ‘N

ew Fang’ to the clavinet provided by John

Paul Jones in ‘Scumbag Blues’, who plays a hosts of

instruments along with his usual bass duties in the

album, the band takes a whole new stand in blending

the grunge of Nirvana, th

e blues rock of Led Zeppelin

and the stoner element of Kyuss/Queens of th

e Stone

Age. Given that th

e feel of the songs are more of th

e

latter since Josh Homme provides the riffs and the vocals

for all of th

e songs, little can taken away fro

m the way

these great musicians have all b

lended in so perfectly.

Described as a jam session turned into an album,

the songs are a perfect reflection to how much fun

the members of the band had recording this album.

Each song takes a dive into a different area of this

diverse genre we call hard rock, w

ith touches of each

members previous exploits like in ‘No One Loves

Me & Neither Do I’ w

hich is reminiscent of ‘Trample

Under Foot’ b

y Led Zeppelin. What probably would

disappoint people though about the album is the fact that an

overwhelming expectation would have been laid

on the album considering the success and fame

the members’ previous bands had, but one should

not forget the fact that they have tried to deviate,

although not

entirely,

from their

previous

exploits to produce something fun, experimental and

entirely new. O

verall, the album would receive a 3/5

considering that at times with songs like ‘Dead End

Friends’ and ‘Warsaw or the First Breath You Take

After You Give Up’ it can get a bit of a drag, but,

taking nothing away from the album in its

entirety, it

is heavy, fun and something you

could see your self listening to for years to come.

It might seem like a long winding road to the top of the mount of success, but the by the look of things, the ascent, is well worth the struggle.

From dropping out of school aged 16, to becoming a business magnate managing over 400 companies, Sir Richard Branson has led an interesting life. Sir Richard Branson has propelled himself to become the 254th richest man in the World (Forbes 2011) with an estimated net worth of $4.2billion.

“I want Virgin to be as well-known around the world as Coca-Cola.”

Virgin Group, the conglomerate founded by Branson, consists of over 400 companies across the World specializing in sectors such as travel, entertainment and lifestyle. The brand name “Virgin” arose when Branson was setting up his record shop. He considered himself a ‘virgin’ in business, thus, coining the name Virgin for his entity. The current Virgin logo was originally sketched on a paper napkin and remains largely unchanged.

“My interest in life comes from setting myself huge, apparently

unachievable challenges and trying to rise above them...from the

perspective of wanting to live life to the full, I felt that I had to attempt

it.”

Born in Blackheath, London, Branson decided that his destiny lay in his own hands and paved his own way through life’s complicated mazes to ‘become his own man’. In a time when an educational qualification determined the fate and the future of every single human being, Branson embraced his disillusionment and decided to fly solo and be the architect of his own opulence.Today his enterprises don’t only connect the world by air and rail in the form of Virgin Atlantic Airways started in 1984 and Virgin Trains launched in 1996, they also bring us the music from some of the most popular and world renowned music art-ists. Such as the Sex Pistols, which other companies were reluctant to sign. It also won praise for exposing the public to such obscure avant-garde music as the krautrock bands Faust and Can.Sir Richard Branson is the very personification of the hunger that millions of youths all around the
