Featured Artist

Deborah Green

Debbie Green is a bead and glass artist currently living in Lusby, Md. She has been beading for over twenty years. While living in Colorado Springs she would visit an old Native American near “Garden of the Gods” Natural Landmark. Deb says “I loved the time we would go see the Indians doing bead work. I was fascinated by all the effort that went into making beaded buckskin dresses and moccasins”. During one visit the old man gave her a suitcase full of old beads. “My Cherokee heritage must have been speaking to me because I have been beading ever since.” Debbie's interest in other forms of glass art began with a stained glass class several years ago. She has since expanded her interests to include fused glass jewelry and dabbling in lamp work bead making. Debbie has been a member of CAG for 5 years. She joined the Guild after going to a meeting with Mary Embry. Deb says “The best thing I did for my art was to join the Calvert Artists’ Guild. I get inspired and encouraged by the other artists in the Guild.” Debbie gets additional inspiration and ideas from magazines, books and the Internet. The biggest regret Debbie has about her art career is not starting much earlier.

2012 Calvert Artists’ Student Art Award Winner

Sarah Buckalew, daughter of Charles and Sylvia Buckalew, a junior at Huntington High school, won the Student award for 2012 amid the fiercest competition the Award has had in some time. Sarah triumphed over four other students, all of which were excellent artists in their own right. Sarah's principal medium is acrylics with watercolors being her secondary medium. Sarah's other art

accomplishments include winning the Suicide Prevention Poster Contest and receiving Ceramics Student of the Year at Huntingtown High School. Her favorite activities outside the purview of art include writing, baking, and shopping. Although Sarah would love to become an author she feels a more realistic plan would be to try her hand in the fashion design or graphic design fields. Sarah received a check for $500 and a one year membership in the Calvert Artists’ Guild as her prize for winning the Student Art Award Competition.
