Formative experience brings Brothers together

Brothers in various stages of initial formation across the Lasallian Region of North America (RELAN) reconnected in Napa, CA, on March 16-19. The twice-annual gathering brought together Brothers from the three United States Districts who currently are or will be postulants, novices, or temporary professed, as well as the Brothers who accompany them in their formation. The gatherings focus on different aspects of the Brothers’ vocation and provide formative

opportunities for them to deepen their vocational call and do so in community with Brothers from across the country. This gathering focused on the topic of apostolic spirituality, asking the question “How do we as Brothers bring a sense and practice of spirituality to our students and the colleagues we partner with, as well as learn from them?” In addition to the formative workshop time, the Brothers had opportunities to be together in community, in prayer, and in enjoying the nature surrounding them in Napa. Two men will join the postulant program On August 1st two men of the Midwest District will join the postulant program of the Christian Brothers at Jeremy House in Philadelphia. PA. John Haun from Schenectady, NY, has been studying at SMUMN. He holds a BA from Hartwick College in Oneonta, NY, an MA from SUNY in Albany, and an MAT from Union College in Schenectady. Archbishop O’Hara H.S. closed this year On May 16th Brother Larry Schatz, Visitor, and Dr. Scott Kier, Superintendent of Lasallian Education, traveled to Kansas City, MO, to provide a thank you reception for the faculty, staff and administrators of Archbishop O’Hara H.S. After a 52 year history of providing a Lasallian education to its students, the school will close as the diocese opens the $31.4 million state-of-the-art St. Michael the Archangel H.S. in time for the fall 2017 academic year. The new school is the result of the closing of St. Mary’s H.S. in Independence and the closing of O’Hara H.S., a process which has been ongoing since 2012. Dr. Dan Peters, diocesan Superintendent of Schools, said the new school would be a sustainable way to make a Catholic education available to a broader area of the population. The new school will be tailor-made for the three pillars of Catholic education outlined in the diocese’s strategic plan: distinctly Catholic, academically excellent, and financially stable. St. Michael’s will be a college prep school offering AP courses and will offer students with developmental needs the full high school experience funded by the Foundation for Inclusive Religious Education (FIRE). Samantha VenHuizen, Assistant Director of Development, spoke to the participants about the plans for Lasallian Days in Kansas City and the establishment of an active alumni association for O’Hara H.S. Brother Charles Kitson Institute starts this summer Lasallian Volunteers (LV) is excited to announce the Brother Charles Kitson Institute for Formation of Lasallian Volunteers. The Kitson Institute replaces LV Orientation and will feature a redesigned program to meet the needs of today’s Lasallian Volunteers. Brother Charles was a champion of inviting young people to engage in the Lasallian Mission

to deepen their “yes” to a life lived so that others “might have life and have it in abundance.” Through his example and prophetic witness, the LVs are charged with continuing to share his message of the need for “forever Lasallians.” The Kitson Institute is an intentional formative experience which will focus on the key areas of faith, service and community. It will serve as personal, professional and spiritual formation of Lasallian Volunteers at the beginning of their year of service and engage them in deepening their Lasallian identity and belonging. This experience will invite the LVs into a process of understanding, articulating, participating and ultimately providing service and leadership in our core values of faith, service and community. The Kitson Institute will be held July 21-30, 2017, at Lewis University in Romeoville, Illinois. Catholic organizations worldwide, including dioceses, schools, hospitals, and religious institutes, specializing in Catholic Responsible Investing. Intercom focuses on unity in diversity The new issue of Intercom focuses on unity in diversity and how that is lived throughout the 79 countries where the Lasallian mission is present. Intercom features two stories related to the Lasallian Region of North America (RELAN), including a story on Centre Notre-Dame de La Rouge in the Francophone Canada District. It also features Bethlehem University, the only Catholic university in Palestine, and an interview with Vice Chancellor Brother Peter Bray. The Institute publishes Intercom for the Lasallian family. Donation received from the Larkin Endowment Recently the Midwest District received a gift of $2,116 from the Catholic Community Foundation of Minnesota. The note on the page mentioned it was from the Robert E. and Florence D. Larkin Endowment. The District database showed that only Mrs. Larkin was living, but that she was marked "No Mail." After contacting the Foundation and asking about writing to Mrs. Larkin, their representative said that she passed away three years ago. But at some point, she and Mr. Larkin had established in their estate plan an endowment for the Christian Brothers of the Midwest, the Senior Brothers Fund, to begin after their deaths and to continue in perpetuity. The lady said, "This gift will just come to the Brothers every year. Hopefully the same amount or higher, based on the value of the endowment. No need to send a proposal or anything to request it. We are just fulfilling the wishes of Mr. and Mrs. Larkin, who obviously thought very highly of the Brothers." Thank you to Praesidium Board members The Brothers of the Midwest District extend a thank you to the members of the Praesidium Review Board who assist the District with their insights and recommendations for the protection of children and vulnerable adults and also for the protection of members of the District. The local members are volunteers who work in accordance with the policies and programs established by Praesidium, the national leader in abuse risk management. Its mission is to create safe environments that protect the children, the elderly, or vulnerable adults from abuse, and also environments that protect employees, volunteers, religious and clergy from false allegations of abuse. Recently, Tom Artz was reelected as the Chair of the Midwest Board, and Robert Walsh and Jack Leyhane joined as new members. After seven years of service Ernest Stark ended his term of office, although he continues to serve on the National Review Board of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops. Thank you to all the Board members, and special thanks to Ernie! 8th Day Center for Justice will close The Chicago based 8th Day Center for Justice announced that its final year of operation will begin this fall. The Center will close in September 2018. The decision came after consideration, exploration and discernment. The Center was founded 43 years ago by six religious congregations to be a critical alternative voice to oppressive systems. Since that time, it has grown to a 35 congregation coalition that works with many partners. The Center has experienced the effects of the diminishing reality facing religious congregations. Closing with dignity emerged as the best decision at this time. Brother Larry Schatz attend Rome meetings During the last week of April Brother Larry Schatz, Visitor, attended the joint visits of the Conference of Major Superiors of Men and the Leadership Conference of Women Religious to various Vatican congregations and commissions. He is the only Brother on the Executive Council of CMSM representing 4,000 Brothers in the U.S. The purpose of the visits is to keep the Vatican informed of the current realities of religious life in the U.S.

Page 7: June/July 2017 Brother Matthew Kotek · June/July 2017 Three postulants will enter the novitiate During the jubilee liturgy on July 22nd three men will receive the habit of the Brothers

Recurring themes from the visits include the need for ongoing formation, the need for quality formators to ensure quality accompaniment, and the emerging use of the term “co-essentiality” to describe the roles of the hierarchical and the charismatic church. Rest in Peace
