August Road Trip (continued) Trod by Daniel Boone in the 1700s, central Kentucky evolved from raw wilderness to a land gentility where local folk became wealthy by raising Thoroughbred horses and producing fine whiskey. Indeed, Kentucky was virtually made for these two treasures: it's ancient beds of limestone en-rich the native bluegrass (making the bones of the horses that graze on it especially strong) and sweetened the pristine streams used in the produc-tion of prized Kentucky bourbon. We can't visit this area of Kentucky without visiting: CHURCHILL DOWNS : – located on Central Avenue in south Louisville, Ken-tucky, a Thoroughbred racetrack most famous for hosting the KENTUCKY DERBY annually. It officially opened in 1875, and held the first Kentucky Derby and the first Kentucky Oaks in the same year. Churchill Downs has also hosted the renowned Breeders' Cup on eight occasions, most recently in 2011. The capacity of Churchill Downs is 120,000. AND: One or two Bourbon Distilleries WE WILL ALSO VISIT & SEE: KEENELAND RACE COURSE - a traditional track complete with shade trees and the grand stand , and regarded as the Number 1 Race Course in the country due to it’s beauty and rural location. Route 68 SCENIC BY-WAY: (Regarded as "One of the Most Scenic Drives in America” - a charming road edged with ancient stone walls, gable horse barns (some as fancy as French château's), and seemingly endless fields of burley tobacco. The road crosses the Kentucky River Gorge, where the ol-ive-green River flows between palisades of white limestone. Further along the route passes through lush, rolling farmland punctuated by stands of walnuts and Oaks. SHAKER VILLAGE OF PLEASANT HILL: the plain yellow and white buildings of Shaker Village (also known as SHAKERTOWN) are set on verdant oak studded hills in the little town of Pleasant Hill. This was once home to some 500 Shakers-(one of the largest Shaker Villages in the US)- a 19th century religious community known for its agricultural skills, ritualistic dancing, and dedication to a simple life apart from the bustle of the world. Though the Shakers are long gone (the last died in 1923), their spirit lives on at this former home – now a museum complete with crafts demonstra-tions, guides in Shaker dress, and such examples of their handiwork as flat brooms and wooden clothespins (original Shaker inventions).

OLD FRANKFORT PIKE : runs from Lexington to FRANK-FORT, KY – (the State Capital of KY). This Kentucky Scenic By-way has been voted one of the 10 most scenic drives in the United States. FRANKFORT, KY: The smallest Capitol City in the USA – where we will visit the State Capital Building – regarded as one of the most beautiful Victorian Buildings in the South. NADA TUNNEL : a one-lane road tunnel thru a moun-tain. This interesting tunnel is only 12 feet high and 13 feet wide (i.e.- one lane) & is approximately 1/2 mile long and was built in 1911 as a railroad tunnel back in the logging days. It was abandoned by the railroad once the area had been logged out, and was converted to a paved road and is now part of KY SR-77; The RED RIVER GORGE LOOP - . This scenic highway climbs and twists through the Red River Gorge Geological Area past some of the most spectacular scenery in the State of Kentucky; A Scenic Drive thru THE DANIEL BOONE NATIONAL FOR-EST - where we will visit and have lunch at the NATURAL BRIDGE STATE RESORT PARK –of KY; BEREA, KY : Home of BEREA COLLEGE – noted for it’s Arts & Crafts Departments. Berea is regarded as the Crafts Capital of Kentucky; BARDSTOWN, KY: where we will visit: * A Museum of WHISKY HISTORY; * The HEAVEN HILL DISTILLERIE’S Bourbon Heritage Cen-ter; * The WOMEN of the CIVIL WAR Museum (???); * OLD BARDSTOWN VILLAGE – the re-creation of a 1790’s frontier village – with 150-to-200 year-old cabins. · ** ON THURSDAY- Aug. 25th - following our visit to FRANKFORT – the Jaguar Drivers Club (of Lexington) has asked us to join them for lunch at the CASTLE POST (which looks like a medieval Castle, and was probably built by a member of the Post Cereal Family).

And On Saturday –Aug. 27th Under Sponsorship of the Jaguar Drivers Club- (the local JCNA Jaguar Club of the Lexington/Louisville Area)- the local Jaguar Dealer has invited OUR Club to be THEIR Guests at the Sophisticated Living Polo Series match– to be held at the Ox moor Farms Polo Field (in Louisville) on August 27th. The Dealership pays for everything- and includes admission, free food, beverages & Drinks – all under a nice tent. With lots of Cars on display from the Dealers – Porsches, Maserati's, and Jaguars (of course). This is a major “Horsey” event – somewhat like the Kentucky Derby –(of Polo). The Dress is “Fancy- Cas-ual” -like at a “casual” Cocktail Party – with Coat & Tie,, or “fancy” Shirt and Sport coat, and many of the woman wear HATS (like at the Derby). Between Matches- the spectators go out on the Field and replace the DIVOTS kicked up by the Mallets & Hors-es. (Polo Horses don’t “poop” during the Matches !!) SOPHISTICATED LIVING POLO SERIES WORLD CUP Join us for a barbecue buffet, bourbon, wine, spirits and entertainment under the tents and in the Picture Perfect Landscaping trophy rose garden at Oxmoor Farm as part of the Sophisticated Living Polo Series World Cup. The region's best polo players will suit up to vie for posses-sion of the coveted perpetual trophy, designed by Seng Jewelers. Prizes will be awarded for the best tailgating display. Food and beverage is inclusive with admission. Gates open at 3pm, with the first match scheduled to begin at 4pm.. --------------------------------------------- · AND – above all else - Miles and Miles of Scenic Highway DRIVING !!! ------------------------------------------- SO - Plan on joining us - Make your Reservations at THE CAMPBELL HOUSE HOTEL -ASAP (before August 1st), AND PLEASE LET ME KNOW THAT YOU ARE COM-ING !! AND - remember that you do not have to drive your JAG-UAR to join us on these Road Trips - (Though You might have to drive in the back of the "pack" if you are not in your Jaguar !!!) (Sorry for the delay in getting all of this information out to you, BUT some of this is “BREAKING NEWS” –with the Hotel Negations just completed 2 hrs ago, and the Polo Match information relayed about 4-days ago)

Note from The Litter Box: Please accept the apologies of the Editor for the late arri-val of the hard copies of the May issue. Those receiving electronic copies got them on time. However the printed hard copies were taken to the post office as usual and an un-named USPS employee left them in the box on the floor behind her counter for 2 weeks until we made an enquiry as to when they went out. No one else at that post office thought it strange that sealed and posted items where not being processed.

On a second note:

The Litter Box is moving!!! The Litter Box files and computer will be relocating along with Judi and me from our base in Marvin, NC to a new location in Lancaster, South Carolina. In addition we will also be on a 2 1/2 week road trip to Windsor, CO. So the next issue will be out at the beginning of August without any involvement from the USPS for the delay.

Hear ye, Hear Ye, Hear ye! Fellow Jaguar

Clubbers.....

We are 30 some sleeps away from the 2016 CJC Con-cours sanctioned event at Little Switzerland, NC! The fly-er and Registration form are attached for your conven-ience.....it's time to sign up if you haven't already done so! I am pleased to share that the Switzerland Inn is com-pletely booked with Concours attendees, but there are a few single rooms available in the Diamondback section of the Inn for those willing to 'rough it' in tighter surround-ings with no TV (I stayed in that section on my own for my first CJC event and found it both adequate and eco-nomical-we're not in the room much anyway). Should you wish to be placed on the waiting list for a room con-tact the Inn directly by calling Whitney at 1-800-654-4026 or e mail her at [email protected]. Alternate accommodation close by may be available at the Big Lynn Lodge (http://www.biglynnlodge.com/) or at the Alpine Inn (http://www.alpineinnnc.com/). There is also accommodation in Marion at either the Comfort or Hampton Inn. Call for silent auction Items: Should you have anything of value and / or interest to donate for sale we'd love to hear from you! Not only does the silent auction add to the enjoyment of the event, but it is also the major source of revenue for our contribution to the USO from the event. Your contribu-tion would be greatly appreciated- contact Jamie Lovello ( [email protected]) or myself ([email protected]) to share what you have and to ar-range for pick up if you can't bring it yourself. Call for Volunteers: The ongoing success of the Concours event is directly proportional to volunteer participation, and in the past it's been outstanding! For those willing to set aside a bit of time and be more immersed we could use assistance with the following functions:

A.) Registration desk: Thursday: 3:00 to 5pm Friday: - 10 to noon - 1:30 pm to 4 pm - 4 to 5 pm Saturday: - 9:30 am to 11 am B.) Concours field layout/parking: (managed by David and Rhonda Ballard) - Friday 3pm to 4 pm (layout) -4 to 5 pm (early parking) - Saturday 7:30 am to 10 am C.) Auction set up and sales: (managed by Jamie Lovel-lo) - Saturday: 10 am to 6 pm (volunteer for one or two hour shifts) D.) Judging, scrutineers and runners:(managed by Ed Howie) - Friday 4 pm meeting on patio - Saturday- 10:15 am meeting on patio - 10:30 to 1 pm judging E.) Photography/PowerPoint: (managed by Rhonda and David Ballard) -take pictures during the event, then working closely with the chief judge Ed Howie, develop a PowerPoint presentation on Saturday afternoon for the awards cere-mony that evening. Please contact me directly if you can help at one or more of these areas. I guarantee that you'll enjoy it! Gregg Gaylard CJC Concours Chairman 919-270-1406 cell

Memories from The Gathering at Shelton Vineyards

By: Jerry Cohen This past April 16th Judi and I along with new friends, neighbors, and CJC members Anne and Ray Hargreaves caravanned up I-77 to Dobson, NC for The Gathering. It is an all British car show on the grounds of the beautiful Shelton Vineyards. This was also the sight for the CJC April meeting. Several club members attended and many showed their cars as well.

This was the first time in showing at Shelton for mem-bers Rick and Dee Wotring. They took first in class in

their 1995 XJS 6.0 V12 convertible, one of only 78 ever produced in 1995. Judy and Skip Meyers took a trophy for their heavily modified 1999 XK8 convertible.

In their first ever people’s choice show Ray and Anne Hargreaves took a trophy home for their 1991 XJS Classic Collectors Edition.

Judi and I gathered a second place for our 2010 XK Coupe. It was the picnic set up with wine and grapes that put us over the top. We are all looking forward to this event again next year because the setting is hard to beat and the friends, wine, and good food make for a super experience...oh yes the trophies helped too.
