About this catalog…

This free resource is organized by Juneau Flukes, a non-profit dedicated to

research, education, and community that focuses on humpback whales in the

Juneau area. This catalog includes a combinations of photographs from permitted

research cruises and from citizen science and web-contributed sources.

Tips

When possible, use the trailing edge when matching flukes. The peaks and valleys

tend to persist through the whale’s life and can help you identify it.

You can lighten a photo by changing the exposure and/or contrast. This will often

help to reveal markings on a fluke that may otherwise be difficult to see.

It often helps to rotate the photo so the flukes are horizontal in the frame and crop

the photo (maintain a 2x3 ratio). Always keep a copy of the original!

When Matching

Flukes

Pay attention to both the coloration and SHAPE of the flukes

Scars can be acquired and can fade over time.

White coloration scars black and black coloration scars white.

Dark photos can hide markings. Below are 2 photos of

the same whale in different lighting. Be sure to also look

at the trailing edge of flukes when matching.

Photo ID allows us to track humpback

whales individuals non-invasively

Photo ID can tell us about:

• Migration and movements

• Site fidelity (or tendency to return to and

stay in the same areas)

• Relationships with other whales

• Age and longevity

• Reproductive success

• Life history

• Behavior (for example, which ones tend

to be in bubble net feeding groups)

• Population estimates

• And much more…

How to Use This Catalog

There are 206 individual humpback whale flukes in

this catalog taken between 2006-2018, arranged

whitest to darkest. The (YEAR) in the notes is the first

year that whale was added to the Juneau Flukes

Catalog.

The whales seen in the Juneau area are part of a

larger, Southeast Alaska feeding aggregation and

move in and out of the Juneau area. For a more

comprehensive catalog of Southeast Alaska

humpback whales – visit www.alaskahumpbacks.org.

IDs here that 3-4 numbers are SEAK IDs from the

Southeast Alaska catalog, and those with longer IDs

are not yet cataloged in the SEAK catalog and are

referenced by their www.happywhale.com ID number.

Many photos on this site were taken under scientific

research permit and/or with telephoto lenses. Non-

permitted individuals need to adhere to all whale

watching regulations and cannot approach a whale

closer than 100 yards in Alaskan waters.
