We are saying farewell to some of our staff.

First, a huge hug and ‘thank you’ from all of us to our very dear Office Administrator, Ms. Taylor who is retiring. Your cheery smile and expert work will be hugely missed by our staff, students and families. Congratulations on all of what you have accomplished and our best wishes to you.

Also leaving are Ms. Ainslie, Ms. Connor, Ms. Craig and Madame Elena. Each will be continuing their exemplary work as educators at new schools in the TDSB. The staff and students will miss them and the students at their new schools will benefit from their caring attitude and commitment to students and families.

Have you completed the Parent Census? This anonymous survey is very important for our school. It will help us to better meet your family’s needs. Dixon Grove Junior Middle School wishes each and every one of our community a safe summer full of fun, family and friends. Looking for something to do this summer?

We look forward to seeing everyone on September 2, 2014!

Congratulations to all of our Dixon Grove students and families on a fantastic year full of learning and laughter. We wish you a very safe and happy summer. Check out our Dixon Grove website for some summer activities! An especially big congratulations to all of our grade 8s on their graduation and all the very best to them in grade 9.

I go to the breakfast club every morning at 8:00. We always have apple or orange juice, cereal and fruits. Plus each day they give out different hot foods like pancakes. This program helps me because if I don’t eat breakfast at home, it helps me get set for the day until lunch time. It is nutritious and with the fresh ingredients, it tastes delicious.

Nutrition at Dixon Grove

Snack Just as students are starting to get hungry, right before morning recess, they are provided with healthy snacks. If you watch classroom doors around 10:00, you’ll see students going to our Community Room to meet the amazing team of Snack Program volunteers lead by our very special Ms. Arniotis. This program makes such a difference. THANK YOU!

THANK YOU to Yessenia and Cecilia for all their leadership, time and huge effort. What a difference you make!

THANK YOU to the volunteers, to the Toronto Foundation for Student Success and to our partners, The Toronto Real Estate Board and the ReMax West Realtor Offices.

Breakfast

The Lunch Program We are two of a few grade 8 students that get to help in the cooking program. This program makes healthy delicious lunches for the students at Dixon Grove for only $2.00. We learn different recipes, we learn about cooking and we learn about serving the food. It is great to be helping provide students with a good lunch.

~ Ashley and Mustaf, grade 8

Lunch

COBS Bread Each Tuesday night, a volunteer drives to Humbertown Mall located at 273 The Kingsway to package over 150 loaves of amazing bread that are donated by COBS Bakery to Dixon Grove. This bread supports the lunch program and our families. THANK YOU COBS!

We liked snack because it helped us get strong. Junk would make us sick, tired and not healthy. But our snacks are healthy, yummy and tasty and helped us get smarter. Thank you for giving us the snacks.

On the day of the Historica Fair, our gym was packed with beautiful boards filled with pictures, paragraphs, timelines and so much more. Historica was the highlight of my grade 8 year, I learned a ton and I had a lot of fun.

FED UP! The class of 8G attended the Hot Docs Festival which is one of the biggest events held in Toronto where early screenings of the most interesting documentaries are held. We watched the documentary “Fed Up” which revealed the truth about our food industry. The health of our generation is in the hands of the food industry who is misleading us with the products we consume. Added sugar is a common ingredient in our foods – even the supposedly healthy ones! The reason why our generation is getting unhealthier and hungrier by the minute is because the hidden epidemic is… SUGAR.

6C did an experiment to see if LED lights can be powered using ordinary lemons, zinc nails, pennies (that were minted before 1982 because they have more copper), wires and LED lights. It was very exciting to connect all 10 LED lights with wires. We came across a couple of difficulties as it was challenging to put the penny and the nail inside a lemon and connect the wires. With the juice squirting out on our faces, we saw the bright, green lights flashing. It was a flabbergasting experiment. We were thrilled to see the lights flashing after all the hard work we did.

Upon return from our winter break all grade 8 students started their work on Historica. This was huge for us. From work in the computer lab to designing our board and staying up late – every grade 8 student really had a sense of independence. Students got to choose any topic that impacted Canada, research it, and present it on a board.

Our junior boys soccer team played with a lot of skill and determination and after a very even match against Rosedale PS they lost 3-2 in the last several minutes. They won their remaining 3 games and did not allow any goals against them! The boys learned a lot about teamwork, commitment and sportsmanship. They were very proud to represent Dixon Grove and they did a fantastic job doing it. Congratulations to the team on their 2nd place finish. Mr Mokren would like to thank everybody for their hard work leading up to this great day.
