Teachers will have signs posted outside near the entry doors for their class to meet before the first bell at 8:50am. All parents are then welcome to stay and join us in the main gym for coffee and participate in a volunteer orientation. All parents wishing to volunteer in the school must first attend a Volunteer Orientation, so this is a good time to get this out of the way. Finally, I would like to thank both our School Council Executive and the Calgary Friends of the Cavaliers Foundation for their tremendous work in supporting our school. June Newsletter 2019

Dear Parents, Once again, we’ve come to the end of another school year. I would like to take this time to thank you for your continued support and assistance. Our staff ap-preciates your commitment and efforts to support our school with fundraising,

volunteering and helping to organize various school events and functions. Thank you so much! Are You Moving?

We are continuing to plan for the 2019-2020 school year and require your assistance in letting us know if your child(ren) currently enrolled in Kindergarten to Grade 8 will NOT be returning to St. Joan of Arc next year. Thank you to those families who have already let us know that they are not re-turning. If your status changes between now and June please email [email protected] or [email protected]. This will allow us to offer spots to those still on wait lists.

Class Lists for 2019-2020 School Year

Class lists are generated to ensure optimal learning for all students. Teacher teams come together at the end of every year to look at student placements very carefully. A great deal of time and effort goes into placing students in the most appropriate classes to help ensure success. Teacher teams take into account many variables when assigning students (class size and complexity, gender, academic levels, learning styles, behaviour, independence, specialized programming, friendships …etc.) Parent “request letters” are not being accepted except in cases where there are extenuating circumstances. Thank you for your understanding and cooperation in this lengthy process.

Elementary Play Day

Friday June 21, 2019 Play day is coming! Students and staff are busy preparing for a day of fun for our Elementary stu-dents. Our play day has been planned by leadership students and staff with the support of School Council. The activity based play day will offer many play stations for students to travel to with their friends. Stations have been designed to incorporate fun based physical skills and to encourage active participation. Students are encouraged to complete all stations, which will be set up in and outside of the school. We are grateful to our Leadership Students, Play Day (staff) Committee, School Council and our parent volunteers who will help support the running of stations. The school will provide each student with a free snack and lunch! Play Day will go rain or shine, but let’s pray for sunshine! Additional information will be emailed out to parents/guardians.

Grade 9 Farewell

The spiritual theme for our 2018-2019 Grade 9 Farewell is “Search, and you will find;" (Matthew 7:7) Being children of God, we are called to his will. Through prayer, we all have an opportunity to foster a closer relationship with God. As the Church teaches us, “prayer is the raising of one’s mind and heart to God or the requesting of good things from God.” On June 5, 2019 the Grade 9 Farewell will mark the celebration of our grade 9 stu-dents as we prepare to send them off to high school in this spirit of this theme. Students will arrive at the school for a community gathering continental breakfast, followed by a presentation from a guest speaker. Another special experience awaits as they leave for Stage West Dinner Theatre for a buffet lunch and performance of “A Gentleman’s Guide to Love & Murder.” Upon leaving the theatre, students return to the school for an opportunity to share about the day, after which they will proceed to St. Michael Church for their Farewell Mass. On behalf of the teachers, support staff and administration, we bid a farewell to the class of 2019! 1 Timothy 4:12 “Don’t let anyone look down on you because you are young, but set an ex-ample for the believers in speech, in life, in love, in faith and in purity.”

Safety Patrols June 2019 Patrol Training Our Grade 4 Patrol Trainees have been on duty for almost a month now and are demonstrating a greater comfort level with the roles and responsibilities involved. Constable Hartmann also completed a successful training session with all the new grade 4 patrollers. We have also begun to train our new Lieutenants for the 2019-2020 school year. We expect that all new patrols should be finished their training by mid to late June and a new Patrol Schedule put into effect at about that time. This schedule will then carry over in September. Thank you to all patrollers and parents for their com-mitment and flexibility during the training period. Your support is truly appreciated. Jay Walking The patrol team has noticed an increased number of students and parents jay walking before and after school. Please remember that a parent is the number one role model for children, and teaching them to use the crosswalk is important. This is a concern for the school because of safety issue. The police have been notified about this problem. Patrol Appreciation Day Picnic AMA School Safety Patrol and the Calgary Police Service planned an Appreciation Day Picnic for all the patrollers in the city. This event will take place on Thursday, June 6th, 2019 at Heritage Park. Thank you to all parent Volunteers for making this event happen. Our St. Joan of Arc patrollers volunteer daily to help children get to and from school safely. The time, kindness and responsibility of our patrollers are truly appreciated by all the students and parents at our school and in our communi-ty. It takes special qualities and dedication to step out and stop the traffic in order for students and parents to cross the street safely. In appreciation the school is providing a pizza lunch on June 13th at 12:10pm. To all patrollers at St. Joan of Arc School: “A big thank you for all the hard work that you do!”
