St Michael’s ChurchDear Friends The long days of June are here - Summer, in all its beauty, gardens are full of flowers, the fields are full of growing crops, animals graze in the rich mead-ows and pastures. Fish rise in the rivers and birds call overhead. Everything around us seems touched by God’s glory. After a long, hard winter, these lovely days fill us with joy. David Adam, the writer and priest, who was at one time Vicar of Holy Island has writ-ten a great many prayers in the Celtic tradition. The natural world was a great source of revelation to the people who lived and worked on the islands around our northern and western coasts in the early days of Christian witness in our land. In the daily round of work and rest, and in the seasons of the landscape around them, the people found great inspiration, the prayers that were handed down weave the every-day realities of lives lived close to the natural world with a celebration of God’s love and grace revealed in the gift of his creation. This is one of David Adam’s prayers, written in response to the ever present rhythm of the tides around Holy Island.

Grant to me, Lord, Joy in giving, Joy in receiving. Love in-coming, Love out-flowing. Peace instilling, Peace distilling. Wisdom infilling, Wisdom outpouring. Grant to me, O Lord, A rhythm of life.

God who my life sanctified Jesus Christ who death defied Spirit ever at my side From inflowing to ebb tide From ebbing to inflowing tide Ever with me abide. Amen.

May the glory of these summer days reveal some-thing of God’s love for us and inspire us to praise him day by day in all that we do.

    Yours in Christ, Heather

    PARISH COUNCIL NEWS

The new Parish Council met on Monday 9th May and elected Derek Ling as Chairman and Robin Knott as Vice Chairman. Only four candidates put themselves forward for the new council term which is the minimum number required forming a quorum, Pam James-Moore and Stan Davis being the other members of the Council.

Chairman’s reportI am honoured to be asked to take on the role of Chairman for the Parish Council for the next twelve months. The previous council has been very proactive and has made several significant improvements within the Parish. I would like to take this opportunity in thanking the previous Councillors for their work and effort, the community is vibrant and in good shape. I would especially like to thank the previous Chairman David Tilford for leading the team and for giving so much of his personal time in support of the Parish.

Because only four local people are prepared to put themselves forward to be on the Council it could be believed that apathy reigns in Bodenham, but I know from my time as Chairman of the Community Plan group that there is real interest and passion from local people in getting involved and helping Bodenham be a better place to live and work. The new Council will continue to support the current projects and look to improve the community where ever possible. It will be difficult in the short term as we only have four Councillors but I am confident that more volunteers, who want to make a difference, will come forward and regular Council business will continue. Due to holiday commitments we will not meet in June and the next Council meeting will therefore be on Monday 4th July at 7.30pm at the Siward James Centre.

Derek LingIf you would like more information on how you could help and be part of the Council, please contact either Derek Ling tel. 797389 or Chris Smith our Parish clerk on 797132 or

    [email protected]

OPERATION CHRISTMAS CHILDThank you to all the OCC Shoe Box supporters for your part in the 2010 campaign. Your boxes were all taken to the warehouse in Hereford and from there 11,339 went to Kiev in Ukraine and 745 went to Bosnia. That’s a wonderful total of 12,084 boxes. The OCC team in Hereford is now planning the 2011 campaign. The boxes from Hereford will be going toBelarus this year. This is the country bordering Ukraine that has also bee affected by the Chernobyl nuclear disaster.Nicolai Balbutski, who is the Distribution Co-ordinator for Samaritan’s Purse in Belarus, is coming to Hereford Baptist Church on Tuesday 7th June at 7 for 7.30pm. Friends will be welcome to hear about the impact the shoeboxes have on communities in Belarus, as our boxes will be distributed by Nicolai. We were very sad to hear of the death of Elizabeth Hodges. Elizabeth, together with her husband Brian, began the work of OCC in Hereford, and up to 3 years ago they ran the warehouse together.Pat Horrigan (local co-ordinator).

It is with sadness that I report the death of Nina Horton, formerly of 50 Brockington Road, who died earlier this month. She was a very keen bowler and spent many happy times playing with Bodenham Bowling Club; she was also a guide at Berrington Hall. Nina was in her early 90’s and had been living in Withernsea, East Yorkshire for many years. I am sure all those in the village who knew her will re-member her fondly.Gwenllian Bowden

From the Editor, Welcome to the new look Bodenham News-letter! I hope you approve, but it you have any comments or suggestions please let me know. Trojan attacks and killer worms delayed the production of May’s issue so long that in the end it was too late to go to print. The first time this has happened this century! The newsletter was available through the e-newsletter and the village website and Deidre George at Saffron’s Cross garage for offered to print copies for anyone who didn’t have access to a computer. Thank you Dei-dre it was a heroic offer! Looking back, we had an election at the beginning of the month, or rather WE didn’t - as nobody put themselves forward for election to Bodenham Parish Council, leaving just four councillors to soldier on. The Parish Council is the first rung of Local Government and is everyone’s opportunity to contribute village life and help improve our local surroundings. If you want to know more about what’s involved, get in touch with one of the remaining Parish Councillors, I’m sure they’ll be pleased to hear from you. Looking forward there’s a Duck Race! Yayy Ducks!! If you remember the last race you’ll know that I’m childishly excited by the thought of hundreds of little yellow ducks being thrown into the river. Last time conditions were just a little adverse and the ducks weren’t in the mood for a race, but they were in the mood for a bit of messing about on the river which was just as much fun. So don’t forget to buy your duck, choose it with care, but whether it’s a serious swimmer or a total clown make sure you follow its progress with a stroll along the river bank. The next issue is the double July/August edition, the deadline for contributions is 18th June.Sign up for the e-newsletter by visitingwww.bodenhamnewsletter.co.ukContact me: [email protected]: 01568 797872mail: 1 Orchard Bungalow, Bodenham, HR1 3JS
