June meeting
Our speaker this month is orchid artist and conservationist Charles Hess. You may have seen Charles’s watercolor paintings of orchids in exhibits at SWROGA shows in recent years. Charles will speak to us about orchid conservation, and he donates all proceeds from his paintings and talks to organizations with proven track records in rainforest and habitat preservation.
Fall show in Kansas City OSO will be supporting our friends in Kansas City at their show September 24-25. Keep an eye on your plants, please, with an eye toward what you might be able to send. This is a chance to show off some of those plants that don’t flower in the spring during our “normal” show season, and although the show is 3 months away it’s not too soon to start grooming things that you know are fall bloomers!

From our Judging Committee Chair
Members, please bring your favorite blooming plants to our monthly meetings and enter them in the judging competition! In addition to plants being judged by your peers, and awarded ribbons, you will receive points toward year end prizes as a reward for your participation. Last year at the December meeting gift certificates totaling $140.00 were distributed to members accumulating the most overall points (1st through 4th places), and certificates to those with the most points in each plant class. Flowers are judged against standards for the class, but may get added consideration for symmetry, and difficulty to grow. In each class 1st place earns 10 points, 2nd place earns 5 points, 3rd place earns 2 points, and the plant awarded plant of the month earns 15 points. In 2016, through April, only 11 members have entered plants in the monthly judging and so far, the members leading the point totals are those that entered the most plants. Paul Bowen [Your Newsletter Editor appreciates having pictures of member’s plants for the newsletter, so he also encourages you to bring your plants and enter them in judging!]

Lois’s Musings!
It’s hot!! My new greenhouse still has a learning curve. The slick puddles on the floor have been
cleared, but now I have a heat problem. I have a 50% shade cloth outside over the entire ceiling, but
this one has much more southern
exposure than my original
greenhouse, so it’s been heating up
pretty good lately. Luckily, it’s only
about 1/3 full, since the pergola has
filled up with happy plants that have
been repotted and poisoned. ( Death
to bugs!! )* Since it’s only partially
full, we’re blocking off half of the
sunniest space. Hopefully that will
give the cooler a big boost. I’m also
getting another 50% shade cloth to
drape over the west wall. That’s where I have my Vandas (Ray Potts has no worries about
competition!) and they’ve been liking the extra light, but not the extra heat. My goal is the high 80’s
to low 90’s. Why did I never take a greenhouse management course?
Speaking of repotting, I’ve really been running through my media mixes. I try to keep a large plastic
container of large, medium and small mixes all the time, but have had to remix all of them this year. If
the club works up a bulk order of bark, I’m definitely in. I try to repot after blooming, and I’m mostly
up to date, but the midsummer bloomers will still have to be repotted and divided when they finish,
so things kind of never come to an end in that department. I’ve been doing a fair amount of dividing
this year and hope to have several nice starts to bring to the auction in September.
Remember also that in September, Kansas City will be having their show and start prepping possible
bloomers. A late show like that gives some plants that never bloom for the spring shows a chance for
well-deserved admiration. That should take care of my recent show withdrawal symptoms.
I found this website by Sue Bottom in the St. Augustine Orchid Society’s web page detailing
poisons and how much to use for orchids. Most listings don’t consider orchids, just general
plants that could be hardier than the orchids. It’s nice to have comprehensive and specific
orchid info. Sue Bottom has a regular column in Orchids Mag.
