LCMS Chaplains
The LCMS Ministry to the Armed Forces supports almost 200 chaplains, who represent the
church on active duty, the reserves, the National Guard, and Civil Air Patrol. Chaplains meet the
needs of military personnel and their families.
The LCMS cares deeply for those who currently serve, for those who have donned the cloth
of our nation in uniform, and for those who served our nation and live in our communities.
Our pastors of The Lutheran Church—Missouri Synod serve honorably and with distinction
as military chaplains. From the Civil War through both World Wars, Korea, Vietnam, and
current areas of conflict, our chaplains bring the Good News of Jesus Christ to those protecting
our great nation.
Some chaplains serve on forward bases in harm’s way, others onboard ships maintaining
vigilant watch over the seven seas, and others walk the flight line on isolated Air Bases engaging
Airmen on faith and family as they load fighter aircraft for combat operations. These “pastors in
uniform” provide Word and Sacrament ministry while enduring hardship, constant peril and
danger.
The LCMS Ministry to the Armed Forces assists and trains congregations through project
Operation Barnabas. The goal is to equip and encourage local LCMS members in compassionate
care and witness by training outreach to all military connected people (active, reserve, retired,
veterans and their loved ones).
LCMS Barnabas congregations and chapters reach out to these families through witness and
mercy at the local level, whether it is the families of loved ones deployed or assisting those who
have served to reintegrate back home with their family, their church and their community.
See you all soon. Pastor GeRue
Please pray for Pastor GeRue, his family, Trinity Lutheran Church and School, our county and
all Military personnel. Pastor may be reached at CH Keith GeRue 3300 Rancier Ave. Apt. 128
Killeen, TX 76543 or [email protected] .

Recently Finished Projects
Thanks to donations from the PTLS, Solar shades are
in place in the Before and After
care room, as well as shades in
the Pre-K room. Faulty faucets
have been replaced in the
Mother’s room, Men’s room in the Narthex and
Women’s room on the second floor. PTLS also paid
for new paper towel dispensers. We tackled some
boiler problems. There were also issues with some
Exit and Emergency lights which have been taken
care of, as well as fire
extinguishers replaced. We
purchased a 3M wax applicator system to allow the
custodian to give the building a new finish on the
floors in a way that saves wax. Classroom heaters
were repaired. Because of issues with Door 9 not
locking properly, it is now an emergency exit only.
Various inspections have been conducted. Ceiling
tiles have been replaced to account for difference in
sizes of the E-lights, and some loose floor tiles have
been replaced. We pulled out the first pew on the
left side of Church to accommodate wheelchairs.

Current Projects
We have more water damage by door 8. This is an
issue of over saturated masonry, not another roof
leak. We are having this repaired with glass blocks.
Repairs to the roof where the Bell Tower meets the
church are needed. Repairs to the metal roof will
likely happen this Fall.
Marty Schrampfer is updating our
camera system with a 16-camera unit,
which will greatly enhance security.
The new phone system is finished.
The fan in the bell tower is not
operational. We are rebuilding this
fan with the help of a new motor.
We are also adding improved
lighting in the choir loft.
We are working with Focus on Energy to change
lights in classrooms, thus saving money on our
energy bills.
Coming Soon!
Our property clean up this year will be combined
with a lunch. Please join in the fun as together,
we spruce up Trinity and enjoy some fellowship.
The date will be announced soon. Won’t you
please plan to join us?
Our Wish List for Trinity
• The church roof is thirty plus years old, and
is near the end of its life. Replacement cost
is about $100.000.00
• The parking lot is in need of LED upgrades.
• The ceiling in the Large Fellowship Hall is in
bad shape, and in serious need of
replacement. Cost > $10,000.00
• Although Trinity’s grounds are beautifully
kept, landscaping and grass treatment costs
are ever present. We would like funds for
lawn treatment and mulch. We could also
use bags of ice melt for the winter season.
• We’d love to have automatic gate openers
for the parking lot gates.
• The parking lots need resealing and
restriped. Cost: Around $4000.
• A large, air recycling overhead fan for the
church is needed, which will be more energy
efficient than our current failing fans.
$5000.00 estimated cost.
• The beautiful stained glass
windows have been accessed,
and within a decade re-leading
will have to be done so they
retain their value.
• The air handler in the gym will
soon have to be addressed.
• We would like to replace damaged entrance
tiles with carpet tiles, like the ones in the
entrance by door 7.
• The sound board needs replacing $5000.
Thank You to…
• Those of you who continue to help our Board
with donations towards Adopt a Bill.
• Trinity Ladies Aid, who generously gave us a
donation to purchase cleaning supplies.
• Dinner theater group allowed us to use their
profits towards purchasing new carpet in the
sanctuary (details coming soon!)
• Lee Colby, for getting rid of old electronics.
• Sandy Guiley, our grass cutter this year.
• Elaine Weinig, who designed the poster to
help us reach our goal of a new roof.
• Marty Schrampfer, for countless hours of
tech support and security advancements.
• Dave Acker, Bob Flater, Lee Colby and
Lindsey Buksyk for cleaning the church pews.
• The many people who gave anonymously to
Trinity in the past months. Thanks to the
generosity of these people, we have gotten:
• A motion detecting light going down the
steps to the Large Fellowship Hall.
• A motor for the Bell Tower Fan.
• New lawn mower.
• A new faucet in the Mother’s Room.
• A new handicap accessible door
inside entrance by door 7, adding
handicap accessibility.
These donations add up! Have you
given towards special projects? We’d
like to recognize you either by name or
anonymously. Are there special projects you’d like
to donate to? Contact us!

5 Tips for Beating the Heat This Summer in Appleton-Mary Howden, Parish Nurse
With the summer months upon us, it’s critical for everyone, especially vulnerable populations like the elderly, to stay hydrated & keep cool. For seniors, becoming dehydrated can cause many issues including losing their balance & falling. Overheating can cause heat exhaustion or worse, heat stroke. Heat exhaustion can occur after a few days of exposure to high heat without replenishing fluids. Signs include heavy sweating, paleness, muscles cramps, fatigue, weakness, dizziness, headache, nausea & vomiting & fainting. Heat stroke, on the other hand, is a serious condition in which the body cannot regulate its own temperature, & may lead to death or permanent disability. Symptoms include a high body temperature above 103 degrees, dizziness, nausea, confusion, & unconsciousness. People may also have red, hot, & dry skin with no sweating & a rapid pulse. Here are a few tips to help beat the heat & stay safe in the summer weather: 1. Wear appropriate clothing for the occasion, whether indoors or outdoors. 2. Be aware of extreme heat events & warning signs for heat-related illness to look for. 3. Don’t wait until you are thirsty to drink, by this time you are already dehydrated. 4. Carry a water bottle with you & drink from it regularly (add lemon or lime to add flavor). 5. Eat hydrating foods like cucumbers, radishes, watermelon, & strawberries, all of which contain at least
90% water by weight. For more summer safety tips, contact a BrightStar Care nearest you.
Bring in your clean: Antiques, Collectables, Dishes, Linens, Knick-knacks, Tools, Toys, Vintage, etc. (NO clothes accepted). What’s a Bumblepuppy? It’s a consignment/estate sale store that has helped Trinity raise funds through the sale of your unwanted “treasures”. Questions?? Please contact Elaine Weinig at (920) 470-9090.

Hey! Ever wonder why your ears were ringing after Sunday morning worship? No, Pastor’s sermon had nothing to do with it! It’s the call for children to gather for the education hour. Our group is a stealthy bunch, making their way quickly up the stairs to the choir room. That’s where
the fun begins. It’s a small bunch doing mighty things. This year our children participated in special worship music, presented a Christmas pageant, and helped others through mission donations. In December, we collected money enough to send 16 Christmas gift Shoeboxes to the Samaritan’s Purse organization. This spring, we are sending money to help starving children through the Lutheran World Relief Fund. And throughout, the children continue to learn each week about the wonderful Bible truths that tell of God’s love through the sacrifice of His Son for us. The Sunday school program plans to meet during the summer months. Teachers will be on hand to direct lessons and activities. Weekly attendance is not mandatory. Just come when you are able and join in the fun. And while you’re at it, put VBS on your calendar; July 31-Aug. 4. It’s going to be a fantastic week of stories, music, and exciting activities!

“Verify, verify, I say unto you, whatsoever ye shall ask the Father in my name, he will give it to you”.
CATECHETICAL COMMENTSA Series
THE TEN COMMANDMENTS
In this issue we take up the Fifth Commandment:
You shall not murder.
What does this mean? We should fear and love God so that we do not hurt or harm our neighborin his body, but help and support him in every physical need.
Question 52 asks: What does God forbid in the Fifth Commandment?
And the answer begins:
A. God forbids us to take the life of another person (murder, abortion, euthanasia) or our own life(suicide).
And then these verses are presented:
Gen. 9:6 Whoever sheds the blood of man, by man shall his blood be shed, for God made man in Hisown image. Matt. 26:52 All who take the sword will perish by the sword.
A lot of confusion has circled around this commandment, which may seem strange to say. But if youthink about how the commandment has been learned and recited in years past, you can see that thisrelatively new construction helps to clear that up considerably.
Many have used this commandment to support some rather unbiblical notions. It has been quoted incriticism of soldiers in time of war taking the lives of enemy combatants. Similarly, it has been used tocondemn police officers who have had the sad experience of taking the life of a criminal in the carrying outof their duties to protect and to serve. It has also been used to support vegetarianism with the claim thatthe killing of animals is forbidden here! It isn’t.
Clearly, from the verses listed above, what is at issue here is the taking of human life unjustly. Just threeverses prior to the verse above from Genesis 9, God grants that “Every moving thing that lives shall be foodfor you” (Gen. 9:3). And then He says, “Whoever sheds the blood of man, by man shall his blood be shed, for God made man in His own image” (Gen. 9:6). What’s the difference between the killing animals andthe killing of human beings? Human beings were made in the image of God. Animals were not.
So what the fifth commandment is referring to is murder, which can be defined as the unjust taking ofhuman life. Killing an animal is not murder. Nor is it murder when a soldier or law enforcement officerrightfully takes a human life in the course of his or her duty.
Now that we’ve established what the commandment does not say, next time we will consider what itdoes say.

Battlement Building Begins BUT we need you!
Our VBS fortress will soon be taking shape. We are preparing to share the Good News of Jesus’ victory with the children of our community, but we are missing one very important part of the program, YOU! There’s nothing “joust” about it. We can’t teach children without teachers. Where will you be July 31st through August 4th from 9am-Noon? I pray you will be at Trinity. Many of our dedicated staff from past years are unable to assist this year so we need lots of help. Crusade with us as a Stronghold Storyteller, Tournament Game leader, Great Hall Snack provider, Christian Crafter, or Musical Minstrel. A poster will be up soon asking for food donations. Plan your pilgrimage to our “Mighty Fortress” now! If you want to be involved, please call Renee in the Church Office at (920) 722-2662 or contact Connie Henkel at [email protected]

Tidings from Taiwan
Greetings from Taiwan!
We’re down now to single digits of weeks left of school! You can see it in the students’
behavior and the teachers’ faces. We’re all ready to be out of the classroom. As a matter
of fact, when it’s not too hot or too rainy (rainy season has begun), my Friday fifth grade
learning center class and I will often go outside and just in the grass for the reading
portion of class. We all enjoy the fresh air. However, school is not over yet!
As always, I am so thankful for your prayers and support! Please let me know if you
have any questions, or feel free to just say hi.
Peace, Amanda

J1-Chapel : Building Up One Another
Almost every week, the students at C.M.S. have
chapel. Usually, it’s held in Chinese and led be
various Taiwanese teachers, but every so often
the Americans are asked to lead one. A couple
of weeks ago, four of us led a chapel talking
about how God loves each of us and makes
each of us special. And because of these things,
we should encourage others and stand up for
what is right. This topic came up because, like
in many places, bullying and peer pressure are
problems that the middle school students face.
The American led chapel included singing
songs, praying together, talking about a couple
of different Bible verses, and a skit.

“Jesus Can!” : A Story from E1 Learning Center
Every now and again, God just gives you one of those moments. Last week, my first
graders started reading a book (a phonics book) entitled “Sail.” As I was introducing it
to them, I was trying to explain to them why a boat was necessary in the first place,
primarily that the characters, two bees, were trying to get home and needed to cross
a wide lake. So, I prompted, “So, the bees want to go home. Why do they need a
boat?” I’m even making a water gesture with my arm. “Nut!” one student shouts out,
because the boat is made from a nut shell. Finally, I say, “Because there’s water.”
“Jesus can walk on water!” one student retorts. “And that other one, Peter, he could a
little,” adds another student. I’m glad they were listening in Bible class. “But can
most people walk on water?” I persist. “No,” the class admits.
Praise and Prayers:
- Thanksgiving for a nice
retreat last weekend.
- Thanksgiving for my
students who often bring a
smile to my face and new
perspectives.
- Pray that God would
continue working in the
hearts of my students to
encourage them and bring
them closer to Him
- Pray that God would
continue to send more
missionaries to serve here in
Taiwan.
- We know that there are at
least two new missionary/
teachers coming to serve
here in Taiwan next year.
We are thankful for them!
Please pray that God would
bless their time of
preparation and transition.

Spring Retreat: Kenting 2017
This past weekend was Team Taiwan’s Spring
Retreat down in Kenting.
We left Friday after classes were done. Because
Kenting is between 3.5-4 hours away, we didn’t
arrive until around 11:15pm. Since there were no
activities planned for that late at night, after
dropping our bags off in our room, my friend,
Emily and I took the opportunity to star gaze (the
air quality is a lot better in Kenting. You can
actually see starts).
Saturday morning I woke up early and walked around the nearby national park a bit.
Then the rest of the morning was spent as a team in Bible study and other team
activities. We broke for lunch, before team building activities, which were followed by
more free time. Saturday night we had the traditional Saturday-night-dinner-at-
Smokey-Joe’s (a TexMex restaurant), followed by toasts for the people who are
leaving at the end of this school year.
Sunday morning we met for prayer. Then we took some team pictures by the water,
before heading out for lunch. After lunch we packed back into the vans and drove
back to Chiayi. We had a worship service together at church in the afternoon (I
played piano). And retreat ended back on campus with a shared meal of pizza and a
photo slide show of the year.

Joe’s.
