Jersey’s reputation as ‘The Floral Island’ is a well-deserved one. The vibrant colours of the fields and gardens bring the landscape to life all year round and, during this floral week, you are sure to discover why we have earned this beautifully scented nickname.
Visit many of Jersey’s stunning floral attractions, each one bursting with fragrance and beauty, for a varied and fascinating series of “behind-the-scenes” talks and tours from expert horticulturalists. We have everything from fields awash with lavender to rare and delicate orchids and private gardens open to the public. Local botanists and well-known garden experts will lead you on walks of discovery through secret Victorian garden glades filled with exotic trees, manor houses with manicured lawns and onto the wild orchid fields of the island’s wind-swept west coast. Music, concerts, walks and talks will all combine to enhance this celebration of Jersey’s floral magnificence.
Don’t miss floral Jersey, Jersey Tourism’s 2013 essential, green-fingered guide to the Island - available from Jersey Tourism and hotels.
Place: St Helier Parish Church, Church Street, St HelierPrice: Free From 13:00 on Wednesday 19th until the end of the festival, The Town Church shall be exhibiting, for the first time, a recently restored life-sized oil painting of “Christ Crowned with Thorns” by Jerseyman Henry Thomas Bosdet. Internationally acclaimed for his stained glass windows, of which over 80 were commissioned at the turn of the last century, this rare painting by him displays the characteristics of his work - the sensitive portrayal, graceful composition and masterful use of colour. The painting will be exhibited in the narthex near one of Bosdet’s beautiful stained glass windows depicting the Annunciation and will be accompanied by a beautiful floral tribute.

tony russell Tony’s career with plants and gardens began in 1978 when he joined the Forestry Commission in Snowdonia. In 1989 he was appointed Head Forester of Westonbirt Arboretum in Gloucestershire. He left Westonbirt in 2002 and is now widely recognised as one of Britain’s leading authorities on trees and shrubs. Over the last few years he has become a familiar face (and voice) on both TV and radio, presenting many horticultural and countryside programmes and he can be regularly heard on Gardener’s Question Time on BBC Radio 4. Tony is also editor of the annual publication Gardens to Visit which was nominated for the ‘Best Printed Information Product of the Year’ in 2008. A true arboriculturist, Tony regularly leads garden & plant based tours to all corners of the globe.
Tony will be guiding three fascinating tours during the June in Bloom Week, including:
Wednesday 19th June The Forgotten ForrestJoin Tony for a delightful walk through the Arboretum at Val de la Mare.
Thursday 20th June Trinity, Trees and Treasures with TonyDiscover the stunning grounds of one of the island’s most beautiful buildings, Trinity Manor, as Tony introduces you to some of nature’s own treasures.
david hurrion Having gardened as a child, it was natural for David to study and pursue a career in horticulture and, after gaining a Certificate in Education, he taught at a number of different horticultural colleges. His career in magazines started as sub-editor on Amateur Gardening where he quickly moved on to become editor of its sister title, The Gardener. David was also editor of BBC Easy Gardening and, as a freelance journalist, wrote for Your Garden, The English Garden and a range of other publications. He worked as a specialist travel courier, accompanying garden tours and plant hunting trips around the world, including South Africa, The Amazon, China and New Zealand.
Currently deputy editor of Gardeners’ World Magazine, he still finds time to care for the garden at his Dorset home.
David will be spreading his knowledge at the following locations on Monday 17th June:
Judith Quérée’s GardenDavid joins Judith for a very special tour of her award-winning garden, and enjoys Q&As over morning coffee.
The Gardens of Samarès Manor Accompany David as he leads a walk of discovery through the stunning grounds of one of Jersey’s historic homes.
