This is the issue that really stirs it up: His Biz/Her Biz – with half the magazine for men and half the magazine for women!

In His Biz, you’ll find stories to inspire guys: the man who’s made a fortune in the Sioux Empire by being…well, nice; the radio owner who has 100 fans so loyal they actually got his logo tattooed on their bodies!

In Her Biz, you’ll find stories to inspire women: a PowerPreneur who talks candidly about getting ahead and what makes Sioux Falls different; an entrepreneur who has Beauty, Brains, and Business Savvy – somehow managing to work a day job AND run a beauty pageant by night!

Ok, we admit it – we secretly hope men will be checking out the women’s issue and women will be scanning the men’s issue – because the truth is, the more we know about each other, and the more we can celebrate our differences, the better we can work in harmony to accomplish even more! How to Get Your Energy Backtoo tired for Fun? the "Good Stuff" in Life? by Nikki Ver Steeg, Registered Dieticianwww.yourdietdesigner.com

Hectic morning. everyone had breakfast except you.

another day living on coffee. the day continues with a quick lunch –

but at least it’s salad, right? You can and will survive on veggies alone!

Head on into the middle of the afternoon “so hungry” stage. Leaning on the diet soda…again. But will it hold you this time? NEED the

vending machine!

Made it to 5:30 pm – barely! Go past the many drive-thrus to the safety of your home. Beware The Feast might set in. The “want to eat

everything in sight because it’s been one of those days” Feast. At times it’s easy to let The Feast rule, until you lay your drained head on the pillow.

Exhausted. Forget exercise – no energy. Must sleep. Repeat tomorrow.

Is this you?

Giving your all throughout the day making you too tired to function past 5 pm? No energy left for the “good stuff” in life? Get your drive

back with regular exercise and fabulous nutrition!

Your Diet Designer says Ditch the Drain of Processed Carbs and Go for Power Protein! Power your day with a health-promoting,

energy-boosting, protein snack like: peanut butter, eggs, lean meat, string cheese or nuts added to each meal. And skip the

energy drainers like white bread, cold cereal, sugary snacks, pretzels, bagels, snack crackers, diet pop and juice.

Quality Counts! Get powered up for the things you love! u

Just what we don’t want to hear: within the first three months of starting a desk job, 45% of women gain an average of 15 pounds!* Yikes! There’s even a name for it now – some nutritionists have coined the weight the “Office 15”. Sherry Barkley, Augustana’s Assistant Professor of Exercise Science, weighs in on how to stay healthy and avoid weight gain while on the job:

1. watch extra calories. Drinks: Sip on water, not latte’s or other high calorie drinks. (Sometimes when we think we are hungry, we are actually thirsty)

2. Snacking: Be aware. Muffins, donuts and bagels with cream cheese can have a lot of calories. It’s not that these foods need to be completely off-limits, but portion sizes are often so big, it’s easy to load up on extra calories. Best idea: cut the pastries in small pieces and eat with a piece of fruit.

3. Don’t skip meals. Most people just end up eating more later, and more than make up for the missing calories.

4. Get up and walk around at least once an hour. -Park farther away to make yourself walk -Take the stairs - Walk on your lunch breaks or coffee breaks - Do stretch and strengthen exercises that can be

done at your desk

5. Schedule your workout into your day. Make an appointment to get to the gym. Or, go with a friend. Set short-term goals, and come up with an appropriate “reward” – like new shoes or workout clothes, etc. (Just not a hot fudge sundae!) u

BIZ Spotlight

‘PowerPreneur’ Barb Stork, President of Midwest Provisions, Inc.,

Shares her Secrets to

SUCCESSby Ashley White

Behind every successful businessperson, there are years of hard work, passion, sacrifice – and a little luck. Her success is unquestionable: Midwest Provisions, a certified woman-owned food service company, provides cafeteria and vending services to companies in five states. Currently, it employs approximately 100 team members. In 2008, Stork was named one of Enterprising Women magazine’s “Enterprising Women of the Year.”

At the core of Stork’s success are some basic principles she takes very seriously. Recently, she took the time to share these with BizNOW.

Biznow: You’re someone who’s had strong success in the Sioux empire. what was your secret?

Barb Stork: Planning and careful research before you commit is critically important. Business is never totally predictable, so you have to plan for the curves in the road. You find the right people to work with, you teach them, and you listen to them. You stay creative, work hard and continually evolve. You plan as much as you can, and then you have to be willing to jump in and go for it.

Bn: what risks are there to starting your own business?

BS: The first is, obviously, financial. That’s the one people weigh the most – and they should. You also risk your reputation. It’s your name on a product, and that demonstrates what kind of businessperson you are. Lastly, you’re risking time away from your family, so they must be on board with the commitment. You have to be willing to put in long hours and work nights and weekends if you need to. That’s why I think your business and your family both have to bring you pleasure, because the two will consume most of your time.

Learning from the Best

by Ashley White

Bn: what kinds of opportunities do you think Sioux Falls offers that other parts of the country don’t?

BS: Sioux Falls has a strong foundation of people who are very civic-minded and family-oriented. They’re not only concerned about themselves, but their communities as well. The business professionals in this area are also generous with their time and their leadership. They’re very willing to share what they know and reinvest in their neighbors.

Bn: what advice would you give to someone in the Sioux empire who wants to find success as an entrepreneur?

BS: If you think you have the passion and a good idea, find a mentor. Don’t be afraid to ask for help from people who have already succeeded. But really, so much of success depends not only on the idea, but also on the market. You can work very hard and be very good at what you’re doing, but if that market or customer doesn’t exist, you’ll never reach your goal.

Bn: How would you measure success?

BS: I think success is different for everybody. Financial success is very helpful. It gives you more options and allows you to reinvest or help others. But success also comes from having pride in your ideas and accomplishments. As I’ve continued to grow my business, I’ve never stopped to sit back and say, ‘I’m successful.’ Success is very much something that I’m always reaching for. u

$ The ratio of earnings for women to men,

for all occupations, was 81.2 % in 2010.

The ratio varies by occupation. In jobs

like personal financial advisors, retail

sales, insurance agents, and lawyers, for

example, the earnings ratios are lower

for women than men. In jobs such as

stock clerks, bill and account collectors,

food prep and serving workers, women

earn more than men.

In 2010, nearly 65 million women

had jobs, and 53 percent of these

women worked in the three industries

that employed the most women:

BIZ Profile

There is more to becoming an effective leader than just getting the corner office with a window. To be successful, aspiring leaders need to develop skills, gain experiences and develop a leadership outlook on life. How better to do that than by wearing a tiara and an evening gown.

Meet 32-year-old Jessie Brower; she is the manager of the 41st and Sycamore Branch of Great Western Bank by day, and the owner of the Mrs. South Dakota International Pageant Franchise by night.

It all started when Brower was asked to organize and teach a “Manners Event” for young girls by the Canton Chamber of Commerce. After five years, she felt the need to get “personal experience” on what it was like to compete, so she sought out and found the Mrs. South Dakota International Pageant. Brower enjoyed that experience so much so, that she bought the pageant franchise in April of 2010.

In the banking world, Brower enjoys the relationships she’s made. “I love to help people meet their financial goals, helping them to understand and improve their budget and watch them make educated decisions to achieve their goals! It’s been so rewarding!”

Flip that line of thinking to the pageant side of things and you’ll find Brower helping married women showcase their achievements and community involvement and increase their overall health and wellness. “This pageant shows the beauty on the inside of women because 50% of the total score is based on the personal interview.” Aside from the interview, the state and national competitions of the Mrs. International also feature evening gown and fitness wear.

So how do you get leaders from evening gowns? Brower shares that these women are accomplished in their own right; they are strong, intelligent, confident women. “Most of the women that compete are there for the experience and to get to know other women of achievement.”

As an aspiring leader, Brower understands it’s about relationships. Whether it’s her job at the bank or working with pageant contestants, Brower is helping other aspiring leaders in our community to realize their own leadership styles and skills, confidence and effectiveness. u
