June and July Report June and July 2013
Summary
Over the course of June and the first two weeks of July, Project Hope provided a total of 480 classes
to a total of 2926 students. This meant that, in comparison to the previous month (May), we scaled up
the number of classes by 121% and increased student numbers by 80%. 36 international volunteers
led these classes, and they were assisted in their work by 34 local volunteers, who contributed a total
of 207 hours (over the course of the six-week period)
When considered against the average for the preceding June (*), our program participation (for June)
shows a small overall increase, with enrolments increasing from 2795 (2012) to 2926. However it
should be remembered that the 2012 figure is an average (of May, June and July) which included the
preceding May, so the real rate of increase (for June/July) is likely to be substantially higher. Overall
class numbers also showed a similar increase (with the overall number rising from 365.5 to 480), as
did the overall number of international volunteers (from 32 to 36).
Volunteer Activities
This year, Project Hope broke up for Ramadan on July 12. In the preceding weeks, we expanded our
program provision to its highest point (over the course of the year) and recruited extra volunteers from
countries as diverse as France, the Netherlands and Singapore. In contrast to the volunteers who
arrived in the preceding month, the latest arrivals tended to concentrate their work in the summer
camps and therefore contracted to work on a one-month basis.
On browsing through the report, the reader will note that many of the volunteer schedules are similar
to the preceding month; this is a reflection both of the fact that our summer schedule runs over three
months (May, June and July) and the fact that many volunteer responsibilities remained constant over
this period.
June tends to be our busiest month of the year, with a range of activities being arranged in and around
Nablus. The summer camps tend to be the centre of our activities, and our educational classes are
accompanied by a range of sporting and cultural activities. These classes vary in terms of size, with
some volunteers (in collaboration with other volunteers) overseeing classes of up to 50 students.
Music Harvest’s team of four volunteers also arrived early in June, and they immediately set about
teaching musical classes, preparing for public performances and engaging with the local community.
Working both individually and as part of a team, the international volunteers will work alongside
local volunteers to provide musical training to young students both in and around Nablus.
Our local volunteers have also begun to teach Arabic to students who travel over to Palestine for the
opportunity to immerse themselves in the local culture and to engage with native speakers. The
Arabic classes, which will continue over the course of July and into August, will also provide our
local volunteers with the opportunity to develop their teaching skills and abilities.
Other local volunteers have also been conducting research into the history and culture of Nablus in
anticipation of a set of drama workshops that are set to begin in mid-September. The workshops,
which are being organised in collaboration with WildWorks (a British-based theatre company) will
examine the links that bind the people of Nablus to their home city; in enabling participants (from the
Edward Said Conservatory, An-Najah University and Yafa Cultural Centre) to explore themes of
identity and belonging, the workshops will simultaneously be directed toward musical, artistic and
dramatic expression.
(*) Please note that all figures provided for the preceding June/July are averages (drawn from May, June and July).
Statistical Overview
As has been the case over the course of the year (to date), the English language program continues to
account for the majority of our overall output. However the expansion of our other programs has
resulted in a more equal distribution of subjects; thus whereas the English program previously
accounted for 77% of our overall output, it now accounts for 52%.
Participation upon our French language program was one of the main reasons for this shift, with
student numbers leaping from 52 to 339 (the number of French classes simultaneously increased from
11 to 76.5). As the summer camps moved into full swing, participation in our activities classes
evidenced an even more dramatic increase (going from 42 to 576 students). The incorporation of extra
volunteers simultaneously enabled us to expand our provision of other subjects, and this category
consequently expanded from 231 to 615 students. Total student numbers more than doubled (going
from 1424 to 2926 students) and the overall number of classes expanded at a similar rate (going from
233 to 480).
Subject Number of Students Number of Classes (per week)
English 1396 251
French 339 76.5
Activities 576 69.5
Other Subjects 615 83
Total 2926 480
Geographical Coverage
When compared to the preceding month, the figures for each geographical category evidence a
striking increase. As with the preceding month, village classes continue to account for the largest
number of lessons (51). Once village centres are taken into account, the overall figures for this
category sustain this increase (going from 47 to 68). Refugee camp classes doubled (increasing from
six to 12), while classes held in refugee camp centres evidenced an even greater rate of increase
(going from 12 to 27). Meanwhile, the number of classes held in Nablus increased from 9 to 25 and
the number of classes held in Nablus partner centres increased (from 18 to 33).

Participant Breakdown
Even once new classes/intakes are taken into account, the overall percentage for each gender category
remains almost exactly the same as the previous month. Thus, males continue to account for 47% of
our overall program intake and women for 53%. In contrast to the previous month, children now
account for almost two-thirds of our overall program intake; this figure is, as with the previous month,
is largely a reflection of the fact that many of the summer camps have large classes which are
composed of a single age group.
Ratio of Male/Female: 1382(47%)/1544(53%)
Ration of Children/Young Adults/Adults: 125/31/39 (64%/16%/20%)
Local Volunteer Reports
Local volunteers continue to provide invaluable support to our international volunteers. In assisting
with lesson preparation, classroom engagement and feedback/evaluation, they continue to make a real
and lasting contribution. Over the course of the relevant period, 34 local volunteers contributed a total
of 207 hours to our various activities. On average, each volunteer therefore contributed six hours per
week and 36 hours over the course of the relevant reporting period (June and the first two weeks of
July).

International Volunteers (Weekly Schedules)
In order to cope with an exponential demand for classes, we took on extra volunteers at the beginning
of June. In total, that took our international volunteer numbers up to 36 volunteers (in contrast, we
took on 32 international volunteers during the whole of May, June and July 2012).As the following
profiles demonstrate, each of these volunteers varied widely with regard to their age, nationality and
areas of engagement. Each volunteer’s weekly schedule is set out below (please note that the
overview begins the volunteers who were present in the preceding month and then moves onto the
more recent arrivals).
Edward Knight was a 21-year-old (British) volunteer who taught English and German over the
