Well that’s a wrap on another great AKA Annual Koi Show and what a great show it was—the atmosphere, the friendly Judges and the buzz of the crowd made my day! I feel AKA is continuing to offer up first class koi shows with a great

feeling of camaraderie amongst all.I wish to congratulate all the exhibitors

and helpers at AKA’s 37th Annual Koi Show on a fantastic, successful event. This year the quality was again exceptional and 265 koi on display in 35 vats made a wonderful exhibit. My formal thanks to Teddy Li and Yang Goh Kang for travelling all the way from Hong Kong and Malaysia to act as our ZNA Judges and it was very clear that all AKA Members thoroughly warmed to their company. Thank you, Judges.

I would like to thank Paul Miglionico for his great efforts as Show Chairman; a tough gig at best—but well handled; and also to Graham Fameli for all his support behind the scenes ensuring everything would be in place for both the Show and Presentation night.

A formal thank you to Terry and Wally McNeil for once again hosting our Judges and their wives post show, allowing a more informal opportunity to bond with these two great guest couples. Indeed on the Friday post-show the group arrived at our place where Teddy and Yang proceeded to cook up a storm in what turned

out to be a fabulous impromptu Asian dinner ensuring a permanent ongoing bond with both the Malaysia and Hong Kong Koi Clubs.

Special congratulations go to Shaw Ng for taking out the coveted Grand Champion A with a beautiful classical Sanke that has a superb body conformation, as well as Reserve with his Kohaku. The highlight of our Show was provided by Greg Collins and Wayne Stoves’ stunning Ginrin Matsukawabake, which took Grand Champion B and was a no-brainer for me to present my President’s Award to. Indeed this koi even came into the spotlight back home in Coffs Harbour where local television and newspapers covered its win also.

Also I would like to report that AKA is about to commence discussions with KSA about the possibility of hosting a joint Annual Koi Show; early days, and a lot of points to get covered, but does make a lot of sense. More on this as it progresses.

Kate and I have just returned from the 11th Asia Cup hosted this year by Indonesia. Wow—what a Koi Show: 41 judges from around the world, 2,500 koi, red carpet everyhere as well as wonderful entertainment, gala dinners and some of the best koi in the world. Kate’s writing up the story for our next AKA Reporter and I’ll give a full talk at our June meeting night.

Just a reminder as I do every year at this time that as the weather is now starting to get cooler it is time to watch your pond’s water temperature, reduce your koi feeding and when the water reaches 10 –12 degrees C, cease feeding completely. Your fish will not have the need for food in this temperature range. Also some believe it helps reduce the risk of tumours, as a koi’s ability to digest food when low water temperatures are experienced is severely reduced. Therefore it is strongly recommended greatly reduce your feeding when the low temperatures start.

Yours in koi, Ian Andrews President AKA ■

There was, unfortunately, an incident at the last koi auction when an objection was raised against paying for bins when the koi for sale in them were disqualified from the sale on health grounds and removed from the auction.

It seems timely to remind all AKA Members wishing to auction koi that the fish put up for sale must be in good condition and that the very experienced inspectors who go around the bins before the auction starts have the absolute authority to disqualify any koi they consider sick (for example, severe redness in the fins or skin, evidence of fin rot, raised scales, ulcers or holes anywhere on the body or head).

Obviously deformed koi or those showing evidence of a tumour (usually a swelling on one side of the abdomen) will also not be allowed into the auction.

To offer for sale koi that are not in the very best condition reflects badly on both the AKA and the owner since it is not in the spirit of good koi husbandry.

However, owners must note: if bins have been booked, they must be paid for, regardless of disqualification of koi they contained.

The bottom line: If AKA members wish to sell koi at auction it is their primary responsibility to make sure the koi in question are in good condition. ■

For the third year in a row, AKA came back to the concourse to the main indoor arena of the Equestrian Centre for our much-anticipated annual show. As a venue, it is close to ideal, under cover, a nice level concrete base, lots of drains in the floor to easily get rid of water and a good size to accommodate a maximum of 40 bins. About the only downside is that the roof is very high, making the job of stringing up the banners and koinobori (koi shaped flags) rather hazardous. The bonsai groups were also very happy to return with us this year and, as always, had some spectacular trees on show and for sale.

This year, because a few members were unable to attend due to other commitments, koi numbers exhibited were lower than in previous years at 261, so we only needed 35 bins, giving us an easier time fitting them into the space.

However, the quality of the koi exhibited was excellent making everyone very happy with our standards. Ian, the show committee team and many other members, worked tirelessly before the show, encouraging people to show their koi. It is something AKA has always worked towards—more members actually participating in the show. It is not about how many koi any one person can exhibit, it’s about how many exhibitors we have, the more the merrier! Actually bringing along four or five koi and competing is fun and not too difficult to accomplish. As well, for nervous first timers, there are always seasoned exhibitors happy to help. This year we had a grand total of 17 members showing koi, down two from last year. Of our new exhibitors, I must particularly mention Greg Collins, since he successfully undertook to bring koi down from Coffs Harbour, six or seven hours away from Sydney! If he can make it, all you locals most certainly can. Good on you Greg!

June — Ju l y 2018 7

This year catching koi at 4 am was easier in one respect—it was warm! I am normally blue by the time we have finished, but 2018 has been the hottest autumn on record, with temperatures still well into the 30s most days. Not so good for the koi though, Chagoi (brown koi) and Ochiba Shigure (brown and grey) only start to lighten up in colder water plus white skin on many varieties sometimes is not as clear in warmer water. We were worried about several of our koi in the weeks preceding the show, but other than a nice

Tancho Kohaku who decided to develop three sunspots two weeks before the show, everyone else cleaned up nicely. Catching and loading them into the trailer bins progressed reasonably well, given that we were taking koi directly out the big pond for the first time this year. Having borrowed Kevin’s drag net, we managed to corral most of them at one end, but inevitably, one or two escaped—always the ones you want to catch!

Arriving at the showground I enjoyed my first view of the beautifully decorated arena and

Greg looks a bit stunned to take out GC B.

Delighted Karl Schell, trophy for Best Kujaku.

the lovely koi. The team does a wonderful job on Saturday of making a rather bare grey space look very special for the show each year. My only regret was that I was unable to discover any affordable small trees to put at intervals between the bins; something I think would really finish off the setting. Sadly, companies that hire out plants are very expensive and the show committee decided it was not a worthwhile use of AKA funds. I will just have to grow some!

The show ground was a hive of activity; koi being moved into bins from trailers, final set-up details being ironed out, show management program started up and judging sheets organised, breakfast cooking! Ros Lindberg ably led her willing team of Misa Wong and Rita Borg in

providing bacon and egg rolls for all exhibitors, helpers and the judging team when they arrived that morning. This little touch is very much appreciated by everyone, as is the morning tea home made biscuit selection provided by Barbara Hough. Interestingly, this year, our show was accompanied by an event in the main arena below us, a miniature horse championship event. Initially acclaimed as a good thing, bound to bring curious extra visitors to look around our show as well, in actual fact the horse show turned out to be more of a hindrance than a help. It seemed to attract practically no spectators; the horse people constantly complained that we were upsetting the ponies by making too much noise; we couldn’t play Ian’s excellent music for the

same reason and the commentator for the horse show nearly deafened us! It was probably he, not us, upsetting the little horses, notoriously highly strung anyway! Everyone agreed—definitely no horse show next time.

Our judges, Teddy Li (ZNA Assistant Certified, (Hong Kong)) and Yang Go Kang (ZNA Locally Certified, (Malaysia)) began the day by selecting Grand Champion (GC) A (the very best koi in the show, not necessarily a Go-Sanke) and Reserve, GC B (must be non Go-Sanke) plus Jumbo Champion. Shaw Ng’s mature Sanke won GC A (photo), this was a classical Sanke with a superb conformation, providing a very strong impression. Shaw also took Reserve Champion with his lovely Kohaku. GC B was the koi that stole the show for me however; Greg Collins’ and Wayne Stoves’ Gin-Rin Matsukawabake was a stunning koi capable of successfully competing on the world stage, not just in Australia. Lovely bright gin-rin scaling set off the coal black sumi and snowy-white base of this lovely koi, previously rescued as a young fish from near starvation by Greg and Wayne. Greg told us the koi was all head and almost all black when it was discovered. The story has even been on the local TV news! I am just sorry there is no photograph at this point to compare with today. Not quite filled out yet, this Matsukawabake must have heaps of future potential if growth and development continue on such spectacular lines. The koi also took out the President’s Award and the Head Judge’s Award at the show.

All the exhibitors did well; I don’t think there was a single photograph board without winning stickers. Agus Djafar won Best in Variety Kohaku while Ros and Lars Lindberg were so happy—their massive, never-before-shown Ochiba Shigure won Jumbo Champion! Again, this was a koi with a really wonderful conformation plus excellent skin quality without any blemishes so commonly seen

on the pale grey base of this variety. Lars had always thought the koi did not have enough pattern elements, but in reality, it is the conformation and quality, particularly of large koi, that are the most important features. Ian and I were delighted too—our ‘not-so-snowy’ Gin-Rin Asagi took Variety Champion in Kin-Gin-Rin B. Found by Ian in Ron and Max Farrugia’s sales bin as a completely white baby with gin-rin scales a few year ago, this koi developed into a really spectacular Yuki (snow) Asagi with perfectly laid out red (hi) markings. Now, however, she is a very nice blue! That’s koi for you, full of surprises. We did have hopes our Kindai Showa might do OK, but, of course, there was a better one! Kevin and Misa Wong entered a truly lovely Kindai Showa, demonstrating perfect white skin (shiroji) with deep hi and sumi markings in an attractive pattern, a very worthy winner of Variety Champion as was the exceptional Shiro Utsuri shown by Dung and Kim Tu, also winning the Dave Pogson Memorial trophy award. Another first time exhibitor at our show, Karl Schnell, was delighted to win both Variety Champion and Malaysian friendship awards with his very eye-catching, highly lustrous Kujaku. Lastly, Paul Miglionico and I had the enjoyable task of selecting Most Unique koi exhibited and after much deliberation we decided on a Koromo Showa, since these koi are quite rare, especially one of this quality. There were a lot more winners and superb koi, but is impossible to mention everyone!

Our two judges, ably assisted by Lee Nguyen when translations were required (some of our show classes are different from regular ZNA groups, for example metallic and non-metallic doitsu), completed most of the judging before lunch and soon finished the variety champion selections afterwards. Lee Fameli had the results program well under control. I helped out, checking entries and Martin Rocliffe offered to

Terry having a bit of fun with the judges at the dinner.

spell us, if required, so there was plenty of help on the day. We did identify one or two minor changes to the program that would prove very helpful, for example access to a printed list of first place winners in each variety for all sizes. We had to compile this one by hand for selection of secondary awards like the variety champions.

Similarly to last year, everything was cleaned up by 4.15 pm, everyone on the road taking the koi home. The judges and their wives were staying with Terry and Wally McNeil on Sunday and Monday nights, but Yang came back with us first to help with our koi. We then drove him to join his wife Chen, Teddy and Kandy, Lee, Terry and Wally for a real Aussie barbecue, something Terry wanted the judges to experience, neither of them having been to Australia before. It was a very convivial evening enjoyed by all, but we called an early finish given such a long and busy day! Our heartfelt thanks go to Terry and Wally for hosting the judges and their partners for the Sunday and Monday nights after the show.

On Monday, Terry and Wally, Ian and I took the judges into the city for a tour of the harbour. I had discovered online, cruises on a sailing ship, which I must admit, I thought sounded a lot of fun—a bit different from your regular tour boat. It was a lovely and genuine old ship, beautifully presented and we all boarded with great interest. As it turned out

however (Sod’s Law) that Monday turned out to be a record high autumn temperature day in Sydney without a breath of wind! The crew did hoist a sail or two, but it was a complete waste of their time. Just as well we had an engine or we would not have even left the dock! However, they gave us a good tour, albeit under regular engine power and it is a lovely view of Sydney harbour, from the water.

Monday evening saw our last event of the weekend, the presentation dinner, very well attended this year, including some AKA Foundation Members from years gone by. They very kindly brought along some koi memorabilia for everyone to have a look at. It was a really lively evening, everyone enjoying themselves and in high spirits, as the photographs attest. Very many thanks to John Ling for the great record of the entire weekend. We really need the pictures to bring back very special memories.

On behalf of AKA, a huge THANK YOU to everyone involved, (just too many to name individually), for their huge efforts, again it was a show to remember although everyone thinks afterwards—how can we make it better next year? Ian has already floated some ideas. Always a challenge! Until next time! ■

Paul Miglionico Show Coordinator It was a great pleasure to have Ron and Max Farrugia judge the competition this year.

There were 12 entries in the competition. Growth on the koi as well as the varieties bred was impressive this year.

Runner up was tank 2 owned by Terry McNeil. Impressive Goshiki. Pattern of high quality. Just lost by body conformation.

The Dave Pogsan Memorial Trophy went to Tank 10, a collection of Ogon. Ron and Max thought these were the best example of Ogon bred and shown at the Competition. I would have to agree.

All 10 were of show quality. Conformation excellent. Skin quality superb.

Congratulations to Ian and Kate Andrews...their technique of raising them is first class.

Whilst Ron and Max were judging they saw a beautiful Kin Showa. The tank of metallic had beautiful Sumi which was strong and did not fade. They gave this Kin Showa the Jack Cohen Award for best tategoi. This tank of koi was shown by Kevin and Misa Wong.

Congratulations to all the exibitors this year, well done! ■

A plan to release a strain of herpes virus into Australian waterways to eradicate carp fish populations carries serious risks for the health of our rivers and lakes and could prove to be as foolish as releasing the cane toad.

At the national OzWater conference in Brisbane on Tuesday [8 May 2018], a scientist from Water NSW will report on what happens to water quality when lots of carp die quickly.

Charlie Diedo catches carp on the shore of Lake Burley Griffin in Canberra.

Research is being reported on a dress rehearsal simulation of the impact on our rivers if, as is planned under the National Carp Control Plan, carp herpes virus is released to try to tackle Australia’s “river rabbit” pest.

In the study, dead carp placed in 2000 litre tanks in Sydney’s Prospect Reservoir led to dissolved oxygen in the tank water falling to zero, with levels below 10 per cent remaining for up to two weeks. Without dissolved oxygen, fish and invertebrates rapidly die.

Nitrogen levels increased up to 120 times

and phosphorus up to 500 times. These stayed well above lake levels for a month after the experiment. Algal blooms lasted the length of the experiment.

The report concludes: “These results show that fish kills at high biomass volumes can have detrimental effects on water quality over the first month. Removal of dead fish is critical to maintaining good water quality.”

“High biomass volumes” will be an understatement if the virus is released. No one has reliable figures about how many carp are in Australian waters, but estimates range from 2 million to 6 million tonnes. Sydney’s drinking water reservoirs with carp populations include Burragorang, Prospect, Wingecarribee, Fitzroy Falls, Yarrunga and Nepean.

While it’s possible to imagine a carcass clean-up effort in these contained reservoirs, our vast rivers are a whole different story. The Lachlan River is 1440 kilometres long, the Murrumbidgee 1600 kilometres and the Murray-Darling 2507 kilometres, to name just three.Great stretches of these rivers are sparsely populated and difficult to access. No serious scenarios have

AKA REPORTER34

been painted about how many people will be needed to clean it all up. Across how many river kilometres, in how many boats, and across what length of time?

The idea that in small river towns there are reserve Dad’s Armies of citizens at the ready with boats, nets and trucks to retrieve many tonnes of decomposing fish smelling off the scale like the gates of Hades is beyond preposterous.

Significantly, no nation with wild carp has ever purposefully introduced carp herpes virus into rivers. Eight alarmed Australian international scientists who wrote to the journals Nature and Science in 2017 and 2018 emphasised why.

They wrote of potential “catastrophic ecosystem crashes” caused by the mass deoxygenation but also of the utter futility of the highly risky exercise.

Carp are highly fecund, producing up to 10 million eggs a year. Many resistant carp will survive the introduction of the virus and rapidly breed up, replacing those which died, as has been observed in some of the 33 nations such as Japan where the virus has already got into river systems.

Moreover, rotting carp create environments where the neurotoxin botulinum can flourish. Maggots feeding on these carcasses will most likely poison native birds, causing an escalating

spiral of mortality. In CSIRO experiments informing the national

proposal, in three of 22 different species of non-carp native fish exposed to the virus, “moderate to high” death rates occurred, although none had signs of herpes infection post mortem. This was sloughed off as due to animal husbandry problems, with reassurances that only carp would succumb to the virus. Fingers crossed on that one.

The herpes release program greatly animated Barnaby Joyce when he was the responsible minister. But many scientists see it as a high-risk, cavalier thought bubble that, once released, cannot be stopped.

Globally, carp are the world’s most farmed fish, used for food and fertiliser. Australia has not taken the economic potential of this at all seriously. Aquatic scientists also point to genetic control methods such as gene drive technology and daughterless carp whereby only male carp are born, causing wholesale reductions of carp numbers within a generation.

Releasing cane toads was a well-intentioned, but unforeseen, utter disaster. Let’s not go there again with carp. ■
