THOSE WHO WEAR their Water Carnival button are showing their sup- port for the annual community festival. By KAITY LYONS Intern H utchinson’s 70th annual Water Carnival celebra- tion will be under way in a few days, but you might already recognize this year’s commodore and first mate. For Commodore Nick Nelson, partici- pation in the Water Carnival festivities is a three-year commitment. Water Carnival tradition calls for the vice commodore to serve as com- modore the following year and as past commodore the year after. Last year, Commodore Brian Knorr selected Nel- son as his vice commodore. Nelson’s role then was to assist the commodore throughout the year’s events. He is now in his second year of involve- ment, again serving on the Water Car- nival committee, but this time in the spotlight. Nick Nelson grew up in Dassel, while his wife, Sarah, grew up in Hutchinson. They were introduced at age 15, when they were set up on a blind date. “We’ve been together a long time,” Sarah said. Both attended St. Cloud State Uni- versity. Sarah graduated from SCSU, but Nick transferred to Dakota County Technical College, where he finished his schooling. Now he works as an electrical line worker at Hutchinson Utilities and Sarah teaches fourth grade at Park Elementary. They have three children, Lauren, 7, Hudson, 5, and Adler, 3. The Nelsons lived in Dassel for a few years and then made the move to Hutchinson in 2001. Sarah’s parents were members of the Hutchinson Jaycees and she was a queen candi- date in 1999, so the Hutchinson Water Carnival was nothing new to her. “We started getting involved right away,” Sarah said. The Knorrs asked the Nelsons in November 2009, if they wanted to be vice commodore and second mate. They agreed and were introduced to the public in June 2010. In November 2010, Nick and Sarah choose Josh and Tam Gehlen to be their vice com- modore and second mate, and follow- ing the 2011 Water Carnival, they began their roles as commodore and first mate, respectively. According to Nick, “The Monday after Father’s Day is when it all starts.” As commodore, “All of the new royalty and queen candidates and everybody meets at our house and we go over the parades we already signed up for and then rules and expectations.” They typically plan on 12 appear- ances each year, most of which are parades, but also include meeting with Rotary, Kiwanis, the Ambassadors and others. Duties the commodore and first mate have range from being in charge of the finances from major event sponsors and other large dona- tions, to sending invites for events, and planning parties, to renting parks and even the mini-biffs that are placed around town during events, such as the parades. The Nelsons have been on the Water Carnival Committee at the Jaycees since 2001, so it’s no surprise they have a lot of experience with getting things ready for Water Carnival. “We’ve probably done almost everything except the Kiddy Day stuff between the two of us,” Sarah said. There are around 60 committee members that work almost year round to plan and coordinate each year’s Water Carnival, and most of the mem- bers are Hutchinson Jaycees. There is a lot happening behind the scenes to get ready for Water Carnival to ensure that the general public has a great experi- ence each and every year. “Once Janu- ary starts, that’s when we really start getting ready for Water Carnival week,” Sarah said. The Water Carnival has difficulty drawing people like it once did. “I remember it when I was little,” Sarah said. “I think because Hutch has got- ten bigger with a lot more new people moving into town, people just don’t know about it as much.” The Nelsons want to change that. “We’ve seen other towns that have really successful car- nivals. Nobody misses it and we want that for Hutch.” One of the ways they hope to draw more people is to bring more events to the water. They also want to have a bigger variety of events to try to have something for everyone to enjoy. “Not everyone is going to enjoy a pageant, but hopefully there is some- thing else they will like and will go to instead,” Sarah said. Nick’s favorite part of Water Carnival is the Boat Parade and Grande Day Parade. “It’s a lot of fun and (our) kids really liked riding on the boat,” he said. Sarah agreed that the parades are a lot of fun, but it is difficult for them to explain to their children that they won’t be in the parades next year. “They ask who are we riding with next year, and I explain that we can still go to the parades, we just won’t be in them,” she said. This year’s carnival will be “bitter sweet,” Sarah said. It is what they look forward to, but it is also somewhat of an ending. “We can’t say thanks enough for our committee,” Nick said. “They’ve been great,” Sarah agreed. he is willing to divulge that he alwayshides the medallion in a Hutchinsonpark.

This year’s medallion hunt will runduring Water Carnival Week: Monday,June 11 through Sunday, June 17.

While the hunt only lasts a maxi-mum of seven days, the Hutchinsonresident works on it throughout theyear.

“As soon as the hunt ends, I startwriting clues for the next year,” hesaid. “I also look at all the parks inHutchinson. I took photos of everypark, so I know what every park has tooffer.”

Factors that play into his clue writ-ing include local themes.

“Last year, everyone was talkingabout River Horse,” he said.

Christensen likes to know how thehunt is going, so it’s not uncommon tofind him walking around a park ortwo.

“I’ll go out and talk to people when I

see them hunting and ask for theirinput and comments,” he said. “I get alot of questions from people asking,‘Should we be looking here?’ Myresponse is always, ‘If you think it’s notappropriate or not safe, it’s not there.”You don’t want to be trampling flowersor have your kids crawling on rocksnear the river. It (the medallion) isalways hidden in a safe and appropri-ate location.”

A total of nine clues — seven dailyclues plus two Hutchinson Leadernewspaper bonus clues — will beavailable this year.

Clues for the medallion hunt areposted every morning online on theHutchinson Leader website,www.hutchinsonleader.com.

For people who don’t have an Inter-net connection, the clues are postedin the Hutchinson Leader front win-dow at 170 Shady Ridge Road N.W.

Bonus clues can be found in theprint edition of the Hutchinson

Leader on Wednesday, June 13, andSunday, June 17.

Christensen is looking forward tothe hunt just days away.

“I love it,” he said. “It’s one of themost fun things I do during the year.Last year, I was walking around differ-ent parks. I’d walk up to people andask, ‘Having any luck?’ Some peoplewould keep their clues thinking I washunting, too.”

In addition to the challenge of thehunt, Christensen sees it as a goodthing for Hutchinson.

“I know people from other commu-nities come to Hutchinson to partici-pate,” he said. “It brings people totown.”

Christensen has also noticed peoplecleaning up the parks while they’researching for the medallion.

“I think that’s really cool that peopleare taking the time to pick up a bag orplastic they see and put it in thetrash,” he said.

Myfeet were sticking out and I feltthe pain on my toes from thesnow. We packed up ourbelongings and carried themto a church and had thechance to eat breakfast. It real-ly opened my eyes to what thehomeless have to go through. After that night, I was sothankful for what I have in mylife.

What is one of your favoritememories of Hutchinson?

My favorite memory ofHutchinson would have to bethe first time I returned afterleaving for college. Beingaway from Hutchinson forabout a month and a half, Ihad adjusted to the life ofMinneapolis. However, it wasa great feeling being back inHutchinson. I went to a highschool football game, ate atZellas, and walked the LuceLine Trail. Everything I loveddoing in Hutchinson was stillhere, just waiting for me tocome back. Even thoughbeing at a high school footballis much different than aGopher game at TCF BankStadium, it was great to see allthe familiar faces of childrenI’d taught in swimming les-sons, past teachers, and oldfriends. The heart-warmingfeeling of still being able tocall Hutchinson home afternot living here was reassuringand unforgettable.

Why did you decide to par-ticipate in this year’s WaterCarnival?

I decided to participate inthis year’s Water Carnivalbecause of the great experi-ence it offers. I have talkedwith many past candidatesand all they say is how won-derful an experience WaterCarnival week is and howmuch fun they had. Manygirls said win or lose, you aretreated like a princess for aweek and have a fabuloustime. After hearing all the

praise, I could not pass up theopportunity. Whenever I wentto the pageants or corona-tions, I always imagined whatit would be like to be up thereon stage and I am extremelyexcited to be given the chanceto experience it! I cannot waitto be a part of the all activi-ties, especially the parade! Iam looking forward to makingunforgettable memories andbeing a part of the Water Car-nival tradition.

What is one of your favoritememories in Hutchinson?

One of the fondest memo-ries I have of growing up inHutchinson was when mydad, my little sister and Iwould bike on the Luce LineTrail. From the moment bothmy sister, Kelby, and I wereable to ride bikes, and as soonas summer had come around,my dad would wake us upshortly after the sun had justbegan to rise. From there, hewould tell us to get dressedbecause we were going to goon a bike ride. Together, wethree would bike until the sunwas shining bright and theworld was just beginning toawaken. We'd then stop tograb breakfast to go at SuperAmerica and begin makingour trip back home. Thosebike rides on the Luce LineTrail were so special to me,and thinking about them con-jure up some of the best mem-ories I have of my childhood.

Why did you decide to par-ticipate in the year’s WaterCarnival?

The reason behind my deci-sion to participate in thisyear’s Water Carnival hadlargely to do with my stronglove for the community ofHutchinson. Having spent myentire life in Hutchinson, thistown has become such animportant part of my past, present and someday futurelife. I found that it would be agreat opportunity to partakein such a wonderful celebra-tion that brings together thisentire community. Being part

of a tradition that has spannednearly 70 years will make thisexperience that much morespecial. With that being said, Iam more than thrilled toembark on this new and excit-ing journey and cannot waituntil the festivities begin!

What are your future goalsand ambitions?

As a current student at theUniversity of St. Thomas, I lookto graduate and receive mybachelor of science degree. From there, I have full inten-tions of attending dentalschool, preferably at the Uni-versity of Minnesota, tobecome a general dentist.Upon graduating dental

school, there is no doubt that Iwill return to the community ofHutchinson, the place I callhome, with the anticipation ofstarting my own dental prac-tice. After successfully estab-lishing myself, a great ambitionof mine is to settle on myfather's farm where a dream ofmine is to develop a grapevineyard and someday have awinery. A future ambition ofmine that I find extremelyimportant is to someday giveback to the community ofHutchinson by actively partici-pating in community events, getting involved in my church,as well as coaching youthhockey players in the Hutchin-son Hockey Association.

What is one of your favoritememories of Hutchinson?

One of my favorite aspectsof Hutchinson is our commu-nity festivals and events, suchas the Taste of Hutchinson,Arts and Crafts Festival,McLeod County Fair, and theHOPE walk for Relay for Life. When I was a senior in highschool, I was able to puttogether a community event ofmy own: a 1940s-style mock-USO dance at the HutchinsonEvent Center. I loved theprocess of finding a Big Bandgroup, community sponsors, concessions, and memorabil-ia, and working with interest-ing people throughout ourtown. However, the best partwas the culmination of workon the day of the dance, seeingnew and familiar faces havinga wonderful time together andbeing able to offer an eventwhich brought forth so manythings I love.

Why did you decide to par-ticipate in this year’s WaterCarnival?

Growing up, the Hutchin-son Water Carnival has alwaysbeen one of the most enjoy-able events of the summer, especially the Grande DayParade. Recently, I've beenlucky enough to be a part ofthe film crew with HutchinsonCommunity Video Network, which allowed me to see a lit-tle more of the events from adifferent perspective. This

year, after having watched thepageant and parade throughthe camera lens for a fewsummers, I decided that I justmight be brave enough to tryparticipating as a queen can-didate. I'm looking forward topartaking first-hand in all theweek's activities and enjoyingthe unique opportunities ourWater Carnival presents.

What are your future goalsand ambitions?

This fall, I will begin attend-ing St. Catherine University inSt. Paul, earning my master oflibrary and information sci-ence degree. Ultimately, Ihope to enjoy a career as apublic librarian in Hutchin-

son, or a similar community. Iwas fortunate in being hired atthe public library in townwhen I was in high school, and I have truly grown to lovemy work there, building rela-tionships with my coworkersand the regular librarypatrons, and constantly learn-ing a new aspect of the libraryfield. I am also very interestedin community and nonprofitorganizations, and I just fin-ished my bachelor's degree inbusiness management andsociology at Concordia Uni-versity so that I might be moreprepared to work or volunteerin that field, possibly assistingand giving back to the seniorcitizen community.

For almost 70 years, theHutchinson Jaycee Water Car-nival celebration has been afixture of summer.

From 1916 to 1940, Hutchin-son celebrated the Fourth ofJuly with a variety of activitiesranging from a parade and pic-nic to patriotic addresses andbaseball games.

In 1941, the decision wasmade to create a new town festi-val. The first Water Carnival wassponsored by the Junior Cham-ber of Commerce and tookplace on the Crow River Satur-day and Sunday, June 21-22. Thesale of a commemorative buttonwas the only way of financingthe event. It’s a tradition theJaycees continue to this day

The first festival included anafternoon and evening paradefeaturing 30 water floats, rides, shows and concessions.

The national magazineFriends, published by theChevrolet Motor Co., featuredHutchinson and its carnival. Itwas written, “Hundreds ofswimmers and bathers tookadvantage of the beautiful set-ting to try out the mill pond.”

Although the Water Carnivaltraditionally takes place nearHutchinson’s scenic CrowRiver, this hasn’t always beenthe case. Several years ago,Water Carnival events werescheduled at the McLeodCounty Fairgrounds.

Why take the water out ofWater Carnival? Ease of accessand parking were two factorsconsidered when the movewas made.

Interestingly enough, thiswasn’t the first time the fair-grounds were used for theWater Carnival.

It happened once before —in 1942. That year, the WaterCarnival was expanded tothree days, July 3-5, and tookplace at the fairgrounds, at thattime north of 3M.

Due to World War II, therewas no Water Carnival celebra-

tion in 1943. The following yearit was scheduled again, butmost events were rained out. Itwas cancelled again in 1945because there were no carni-vals available due to the war.

The festival returned in 1947.The two-day event featured 20queen candidates vying for thetitle, a pilots’ breakfast and twoparades. Cedric Adams broad-cast his radio show fromHutchinson and Don Shaw’sorchestra played for the Satur-day night dance. On the river, there was continual entertain-ment with 50 speedboats andseaplane rides.

Someone had written in anote attached to the file, “Per-fect weather, a few water floatsburned up, celebration went

into the red.”No official record exists

describing the fiasco thatresulted when floats in theboat parade caught fire andwent over the dam. Even theHutchinson Leader doesn’tmention it.

Mr. Hutchinson, an impor-tant honor bestowed duringthe Miss Hutchinson Pageanton Friday night, began in 1957.The first Mr. Hutchinson wascity and county civil engineerLew Merrill.

As much as Water Carnivalevents haven’t always takenplace near water, they alsohaven’t always taken place inHutchinson.

In an interesting twist, theSaturday night Queen’s Ball

featured live music by Guy DeLeo and took place at the newPla-Mor Ballroom in Glencoe.

In 1967, the Queen’s Ball wason the move again, this time ittook place at Lake Marion Ball-room.

Like Mr. Hutchinson, theHutchinson Woman of the Yearhonor is bestowed during theMiss Hutchinson Pageant.

The first Woman of the Year,Jean Peterson, was selected in1977. The tradition was sepa-rate from the Water Carnivaland continued to be this wayfor more than 20 years. In2002, it became part of the Fri-day night pageant festivities.

At one time, the Water Car-nival was considered to be thelargest summer celebration inoutstate Minnesota, onlyeclipsed by the MinneapolisAquatennial. Today, it attractsthousands of people toHutchinson. The largest draw-ing events are Sunday’s GrandeDay Parade and the evening’sfireworks.

The Water Carnival contin-ues to offer fun in the sun foreveryone. For a complete list-ing of events, see the poster adon the next page.

Water Carnival is aHutchinson tradition

THE 1941 WATERCARNIVAL waspromoted in a newspaperstory with an illustrationof that year’s WaterCarnival button. Salesfrom the button havealways helped supportthe festival’s events.

FILE PHOTO

THE BATHING BEACH at the Crow River dam in downtown Hutchinson was the original site ofthe Hutchinson Water Carnival. According to the Hutchinson Leader, the first year offered “freeacts and promises to give the audience a real show.”

WINTHROP-BASED COVER BAND 2nd Notionrocked the crowd at Masonic West River Park. Leadsinger and guitarist Ryan Jacobson sang everythingfrom John Mellencamp to Johnny Cash.

HUTCHINSON MAYOR STEVE COOK donned sun-glasses at the Water Carnival Queen Cornonation whileexplaining to the audience that he wanted to create analterego similar to one created by the event’s emcee,Bill Corby. Corby, president of the Hutchinson AreaChamber of Commerce and Tourism, brought out hisown sunglasses during the program to portray a char-acter he called “Chamber Guy.”
