ASPELegislative

Report

The Atlanta Board of Di-rectors held their annualPlanning Meeting last month. There was a lot discussedand some very good ideascame from our meeting. These ideas will be dis-cussed at the July Boardmeeting and decisions willbe made.

One idea we discussedwas to bring back a passprogram “Bring a Young orOld Engineer/Designer tothe Meeting”. This is a pro-gram that we would like to

see get back up and run-ning. How this works is aVendor or Engineer bringswith them to the DinnerMeeting a young or old En-gineer/Designer that has notbeen to a meetings and payfor their meal. However, if itis the Engineer/Designersfirst time attending a dinnermeeting the meal is on thechapter. So we will reach outto all of our members to helpwith this program and bringa Young or Old Engineer/Designer with you to themeetings.

Another idea was to havea trivia question located

somewhere in the newslet-ter. The question will be re-lated to an article written byone of the Board members.A chapter member will sendme their answer via emailand if it is correct their mealwill be free at the next din-ner meeting. This is just an-other way to give back toour members.

The Board also dis-cussed updating our website, but we need someone

within the chapter with knowl-edge of web site creation.Everyone tells me that cre-ating a web site is so easythat I could even do it and Imay even give it try. But ifthere is someone out therein our membership thatwould be interested in tak-ing this task on please getin contact with our SocialMedia Coordinator, JimAllen.

Nick Mosley is busy put-ting together the seminarsand speakers for the up com-ing year. If there is a specialseminar that you would liketo see please let Nick knowso he can prepare while fill-ing out the schedule.

This is my first article asthe new VP Legislative of theAtlanta Chapter. I would liketo thank John Royds for do-ing such a good job as VPLegislative. He set the stan-dard so high that it will makemy job very difficult. Satur-day we had our ASPE AtlantaBoard Planning Meetingwhere we covered a lot oftopics and future ideasabout our 2014/2015 yearcycle. I am looking forwardto this fall’s 2014 ASPE Con-vention and our chapter’sGolf Outing in addition to ourmonthly meetings. Hope I’llsee you at all of theseevents. On the legislativeside I have a couple of ideasin order to keep you up todate about codes and try tomake some interactive chal-lenges.

For keeping up to datewith the codes please visitthe DCA’s websitewww.dca.ga.gov and even ifit is sometimes hard to navi-gate it is worth the try be-

Legislativecause there are a lot of re-sources there. I recommendthat you register to receivethe Codes Update newslet-ter which is free and you’llget them by email. You canalso read them directly fromthe website. Let me know ifyou have any difficulties, Ican try to help.

For interactive chal-lenges I have few ideas. Please send me any code re-lated issues you experi-enced in the past and howyou resolved it. John men-tioned in his last month’s ar-ticle about “dry vent flat”comment. I had that com-ment in the past on many ofmy projects and I was ableto resolve them with a fewsolutions. I can let you knowif you’re interested. Pleasesend me any suggestions forplumbing related code

amendments, so we can dis-cuss them here and apply forthem. You can apply for acode amendment by just fill-ing the form on the website, but I think having a profes-sional community discussionwill be more beneficial. Also, please let me know of pastexperiences and presentchallenges on projects. Many times we design sys-tems just because it wasdone like that, but currentcodes open some flexibilityfor simplicity. Hope all of theabove will open some goodfuture topics and maybe we’llachieve some good results.

Please email me directlywith any question and/orsuggestions [email protected] I’ll try to answer them. Ifsome of the topics becomehot items we’ll have an openforum and discuss them atour monthly meetings. I’llkeep you updated on my fu-ture articles.

Hello everyone, many of you mayknow me already, but in case wehave not formallymet, my name isCarl Garofalo andI am the new VP ofeducation for theASPE Atlantachapter. To getsome ideas for

content and writingstyle for this news-letter article, I re-read some of Jim’ssubmissions fromlast year and I will goahead and formallyapologize rightnow….you guys arein for a bit of a drop-off in quality. Hiscommentaries were

hilarious yet informative atthe same time. If Jim everwalks away from his hugeASPE salary, pension andcompany supplied Sebringconvertible; he could have alucrative career in the boom-ing coffee table book/bath-room reader industry!Though my writing gradedout as at a mere B- levelduring my only semester ofEnglish in college (in a classcomprised mainly of stu-dents who spoke English as

a second language) I prom-ise to do my best to carry thetorch this year and help ev-eryone to become bettereducated industry members.

Speaking of education, the 2014 ASPE conventionand expo is fast approach-ing. Registration is nowopen, and attendees canearn up to 16.75 hours ofCE credit by taking full ad-vantage of the opportunities

available at this event. Justwalking the Expo floor canearn you credits as youlearn about cutting edgetechnologies and networkwith industry members. by Jeff Long VP MembershipIn July of 2012 I took over

the VP-Membership dutiesfor the Atlanta ASPE Chap-ter. At that time, we had 190members, enough to rank usas the 7th largest Chapterwithin Society. In my firstmembership article I set agoal for our Chapter to climbthe ranks and eventuallybecome the 3rd largest.Even though I thought thegoal was lofty, I consideredit to be attainable. While wehave yet to reach that goal,we currently have 212 mem-bers, and are the 5th largestChapter. This is the year wemove up a couple morespots and accomplish that

Membership Reportoriginal goal.

So what exactly is it go-ing to take to surpass NewYork City and Dallas/Ft.Worth Chapter’s for the3rd and 4th spots? The literalanswer is, 31and 10 mem-bers respectively. The meta-phorical answer is, you! It’sgoing to take all 212 mem-bers of the Atlanta Chapteractively working together inrecruiting new members.

I’ve said it more thanonce that I am a firm believerin you get out of organiza-tions what you put into them.ASPE is a Society youshould be proud of beingassociated with. It’s madeup of some of the top engi-neering, architectural, whole-saler, manufacturer repre-sentative, and contractorprofessionals in your indus-try. It should be easy for youto talk up the organization toyour friends not currentlyinvolved. If you need talk-ing points use the following.

· The networking oppor-tunities are endless.

· The ability to earn CEU’sat every meeting.

powder coated, cast alumi-num handles, brushed alumi-num edge guard and I-beamplate are also manufacturedat various locations aroundthe country. Additionally, theentire system was engineeredto meet strict load bearingrequirements and fit stan-dards by Altair Product De-sign, an engineering firm inDetroit. The DECKED systembecame available to truckowners mid-January and cannow be found in more than175 select dealers across thecountry. The DECKED sys-tem is also available for im-mediate purchase on theirwebsite.

“One of the things that we

were very passionate aboutwhen we started DECKEDwas to make sure it was madein the USA. With so muchmanufacturing outside of theUnited States, we knew wecould achieve the best qual-ity and price by investing inthe country and making ourproducts right here on Ameri-can soil,” said Scott Mavis,Vice President of Marketingfor DECKED. “We were con-fident when we started thisproject that we could build aproduct that was competi-tively priced, met our strictquality standards and overall,be a better product that wouldsurpass anything manufac-tured out of the country. Wealso understand that manytruck owners are loyal toproducts made in the U.S sowe wanted to meet their stan-dards as well.”

“Hole making is an impor-tant and time consuming ap-plication for the electricalcontractor, and over the last50 years, the incrementalimprovements to this cat-egory have been focusedaround making small parts ofthe step by step processeasier,” says Corey Dickert,Director of Product Market-ing for Milwaukee Tool.“Building our system from

the ground up, Milwaukeebrings a fresh perspective tothe category that has notonly improved, but actually

redefined the process ina way that the userwill experience

breakthrough easeof use and produc-

tivity.”Traditionally, the

most challenging step inthe hole making pro-cess is setting up thepunches and dies onthe material as align-ment lines on competi-tive units are very hardto see and the weight

of the tool that is attachedto them works against theuser as they try to align.

Featuring the clearestalignment in mild and stain-less steel, Milwaukee’s EX-ACT™ punches and diesfeature bold, laser engravedcrosshairs and a clear viewof the work surface to makealignment fast and easy. They are also set up sepa-rate from the tool for extremeease of use, utilizing a quickconnect alignment systemthat allows the user to snapthe tool onto the punches

and dies once set up is com-plete, and pull the tool trig-ger to punch the hole withease.

In addition, Milwaukee isthe only manufacturer whosestandard punch and die setscover both Mild and Stain-less applications up to 4”.This provides unparalleledvalue as the competitionsells stainless steel setsseparately at a premiumthat can cost up to threetimes more than sets formild steel. The punchesand dies are also designedfor optimal slug removal andcompatible with competitiveKnock Out Tools*.

Powered by MilwaukeeREDLITHIUM™ batteries, the new M18™ FORCELOGIC™ 10 Ton KnockoutTool features a powerful Hy-draulic System to punch upto 4” holes in 12 gaugestainless steel. With a com-pact right angle design tooperate in tight spaces, thetool is also compatible will allmajor brands of punchesand dies** for users thathave already made signifi-cant investments in othersystems.

Dave Runyan

Dave Runyan makes it snow

Dear Ellen,I have known Dave Runyan or 23 years, and in that

time he has been a lot of things to me: customer, teacher, consultant, historian, scientist, philosopher, mentor andfriend. In a world where many just choose to pass thetime, Dave has made a concerted effort to make everyminute count.

A couple of Dave Runyan originals:·Creating a southeast Georgia presence for the PMA,

something that had been tried many times before, butDave made stick.

· Becoming Glynn County’s, and in my mind, Georgia’sresident master plumber expert. When plumbers do notknow how to do something, they ask Dave. Amazinglyhe knew the answer most of the time. But woe to thosethat did not do it his way-because it was the right way!He is truly the “Mr. Miyagi” of the plumbing world.

·Who else could figure out a way to make a threefoot snow drift, in South Georgia, for his family so theycould have a White Christmas?

·Dave showed both of my daughters Mars and Venusthrough a telescope. I still do not know where those are!

·But what really makes Dave a true original, is hissincere and unwavering friendship. He has been a trulywonderful person to me, my wife and both of my chil-dren.

He is in a real fight right now, but in Dave’s typicalfashion, he has analyzed, philosophized, meditated andcomprehended that fight. All bets are on Dave, he hasthe will, and nobody would make more people happy intheir time remaining than Dave Runyan.

We love you Dave! Keep fighting!David, Michelle, Meredith and Ansley Weiss
