all Souls takes place on Sundays at 10:30 AM, followed by food and fellowship at an informal coffee hour. Our church is handicap accessible. All are welcome.

Minister's ReflectionOne of the initiatives of the Board retreat this year is developing a congregational covenant. The congregation

has been working on this for several months. This is a process and the final draft of the covenant will be the product of the hopes and creativity of this congregation and its aspirations in this part of the South Shore.

Every Unitarian Universalist congregation is unique, it needs to articulate its most important values, and identity but the covenant does not only speak to the members, it is one of the ways to speak to the wider

community. It functions as a way to tell our visitors “who” All Souls aspires to be. The congregational covenant gives newcomers insight into the community they are visiting, it suctions as a way of inviting people to continue to check the congregation out. It answers two questions; who is this congregation, what do they stand for, and

what would be expected of me I joined.~Rev. Clyde Grubbs

June 2 - Keep the Hope

There is so much bad news. There are threats to our democracy, to our civil rights and to our planet. How do we cultivate the hope that is needed to face these challenges and affirm our Unitarian Universalist values.

June 9 - Earth Centered Traditions in Practice

The Sixth Source claims that our living tradition is rooted in spiritual traditions that teach “us to live in harmony with nature.” Let us think about how we live into that wisdom.

June 16 - Flower Communion

This is the last service before the Summer. We share flowers and remember that just as we all bring a flower and take another one home, all contribute something to All Souls, and then leave with gifts that the congregation

gives back.

From the Board of Trustees

As we come to the end of another church year and move toward our more informal summer services, there is still quite a lot happening at All Souls. The annual meeting has been set for Sunday June 9, 2019 at noon so save the date. While proxies will be available for those who absolutely cannot make it, it is important for as many members as possible to attend as this is the time that we discuss and vote on important church issues. Please make every effort to attend. We still do have some positions to be filled. On the Board of Trustees, we need a Clerk as Diana Althouse is completing her term. This position is a critical but not difficult one. It entails recording and providing copies of the minutes of each monthly Board meeting and the Annual meeting. All that is required is some computer word processing skills and a desire to serve. It is a voting position on the Board. This was my own first step into a leadership position a number of years ago. It is a great way to become familiar with the workings of keeping the church

running so new members as well as those who have been here for a while are encouraged to self nominate. Please speak with Linda Steiner or Joe MaloneyOther positions still unfilled on the ballot are Social action and Environmental chair, and Finance Committee chair. At the most recent meeting, the ministerial search committee, after reviewing 9 applications, recommended the Rev Joanna Lubkin to be our new consulting/contract minister. Rev Lubkin has preached here on 2 occasions. The Board unanimously approved her candidacy and Rev Lubkin has accepted the position. Mary Mitchell, Linda Steiner, and Joe Maloney will work with her to formulate a 1 year contract which will begin on August 1.We will also be saying goodbye to our present contract minister, Rev Clyde Grubbs, who completes his service here on July 31. We thank him for his commitment to All Souls over the past 2 years and will honoring him later this summer at a special coffee hour after a worship service – date to be determined in conjunction with Rev Grubbs. On May 6, Linda Steiner, John Cobble, and Mary Mitchell met with the architects and preservation specialists from Spencer, Sullivan, and Vogt for a preview of the church conditions report that they will be providing under our grant from the Massachusetts Historical Commission. The report is due June 30 and we will share it with the congregation after we have had an opportunity to review and absorb their recommendations. With warm regards,Linda Steiner and Joseph Maloney

From the Book Discussion Group

The next All Souls Book Discussion Group meets Tuesday, June 4, 2019, at 7 PM, our last get-together before we enjoy a summer break and a summer book selection. For June we have chosen E.L. Doctorow’s novel Ragtime.

“Ragtime …published in 1975…is a work of historical fiction …mainly set in the New York City area from 1902 until 1912. The novel blends fictional and historical figures and ideas important in American history.”

After a summer break, we will resume our monthly book group discussion meetings beginning on September 3, 2019, to discuss Lisa See’s Snow flower and the Secret Fan.

“Snow Flower and the Secret Fan is a 2005 novel…set in nineteenth-century China. Lisa See's historical novels follow the best feminist scholarship on women in the Ming-Qing period.”

All are welcome to join us.
