You know you’re Catholic when you get into debates about who has the better patron saint. Of course, it’s sort of hard to find a measuring stick to compare saints. The saints, after all, are people who lived life fully. That is, they lived the life God invited them to, with their whole heart. The saints are an incredibly diverse group of people. But they certainly have one thing in common, their commitment to follow their shepherd wherever he led them.

And if that’s what we admire in them, how do we compare whether one saint is “better” than another in any objective way? Is it better to live to be elderly like St. Josephine Bakhita, or to die young like St. Therese of Lisieux? Is it better to be a great scholar like St. Thomas Aquinas, or to be a manual laborer like St. Isidore? Is it better to be beautiful like St. Catherine of Siena, or to be ugly like St. Margaret of Castello? Is it better to court martyrdom like St. John Fisher, or to run away like St. Athanasius? Is it better to be a cloistered contemplative like St. Teresa of Avila, or to be active in the world like St. Elizabeth Seton? Is it better to be a warrior like St. George, or to be a pacifist like St. Francis?

What we would recognize, I hope, is that part of the greatness of the saints is that they did God’s will within the cir-cumstances of their lives. To say one is better than the other is to somehow suggest that the life to which God called them wasn’t good enough; that they should have followed a different path than the one God laid out for them.

I was thinking about all this because this coming Wednesday is one of the two feasts associated with my Confirmation saint, St. John the Baptist. We celebrate the Nativity of John the Baptist on June 24, and then we celebrate the Behead-ing of John the Baptist on September 11. And while, in theory, it’s difficult to compare the saints, I cannot help but notice that there aren’t many saints with two feast days. The Blessed Mother, of course, is celebrated on several feasts. St. Joseph has two feast days (two and one-third if you count the Feast of the Holy Family). St. Peter and St. Paul have one-and-a-half each, since they split the Feast of Sts. Peter and Paul. But St. John the Baptist has two feast days all to himself.

So if you’re going to engage in the venerable Catholic tradition of arguing about who has the better patron saint, it’s good to realize that it’s difficult to apply the notion of “better” to the saints. That being said, my Confirmation saint has two feast days. Does yours?

Sacrificial Giving and some thoughts…. “Brothers and sisters: The cup of blessing that we bless, is it not a participation in the blood of Christ? The bread that we break, is it not a participation in the body of Christ? We though many, are one body, for we all partake of the one loaf.” (1Cor 10:16ff)

Summertime Faith Formation Mass Hymns

Processional:

1. There's a wideness in God's mercy Like the wideness of the sea; There's a kindness in God's justice Which is more than liberty. There is plentiful redemption In the blood that has been shed; There is joy for all the members In the sorrows of the Head.

2) For the love of God is broader Than the measures of our mind; And the heart of the Eternal Is most wonderfully kind. If our love were but more simple We should take him at his word, And our lives would be illumined By the presence of our Lord.

Responsorial Psalm Lord, in your great love, answer me

Recessional:

1. Awake from your slumber Arise from your sleep A new day is dawning For all those who weep The people in darkness Have seen a great light The lord of our longing Has conquered the night

Ref. Let us build the city of God May our tears be turned into dancing For the lord our light and our love Has turned the night into day 2. We are sons of the morning, We are children of day. The one who has loved us Has brightened our way. The lord of all kindness Has called us to be A light for his people To set their hearts free. Ref.
