The P&C of Ettalong Public School have recently held some ‘fun focused’ events to raise funds to support the schools ongoing growth and desire to provide the best educational opportunities for the children of the Peninsula.

The recently held Trivia Night proved to be “a great success”. With brain busting exertion being the main requirement, it was not all serious with the teams involved have an entertaining evening.

Principal, Colin Wallis stated in the school’s newsletter that he “would like to thank all those who attended for their support, we raised approximately $1,000 which is an outstanding effort.”

The school is very grateful for the support of local businesses for their generous donations.

Principal Wallis said “We would also like to thank the following companies for their generous donations Westend Pharmacy, Express Lube West Gosford, Chris Holstein, Hair by Danielle, Plus Fitness – Ettalong Beach , Kings of Punjab Restaurant, Goddess By The Sea, Siagon Garden Restaurant and Kabbakaze”.

The week of ‘fun-draising’ is wrapped up with a Pyjama Mufti Day on Friday 20 June.

Jersey Boys (CTC)Starring: Christopher Walken, Francesca Eastwood, Freya TingleyDirector: Clint EastwoodStarts: 3 July, 2014Summary: The story of four young men from the wrong side of the tracks in New Jersey who came together to form the iconic 1960s rock group The Four Seasons.Run time: 134 minutes

The Plot: Jersey Boys is a musical biography of the Four Seasons. The rise, the tough times and personal clashes. The ultimate triumph of a group of friends whose music became symbolic of a generation. This movie gets to the heart of the relationships of the group, especially focusing on frontman Frankie Valli, the small man with the big falsetto. We see the quartet’s coming of age as performers, and how an allegiance to a code of honor learned on the streets of New Jersey got them through a multitude of challenges: gambling debts, Mafia threats and family disasters.

Calvary (CTC)Stars: Brendan Gleeson, Chris O’Dowd, Kelly ReillyDirector: John Michael McDonaghStarts: 3 July, 2014Summary: Father James (Gleeson), a village priest in coastal Ireland, is told in the confessional that one of his parishioners is going to kill him. The man was abused by a priest as a child; that priest has died, killing the innocent Father will be revenge for his abuse of an innocent boy.Run time: 100 minutes

The Plot: Having been married (and widowed) before he answered the Call, Father James has an unhappy daughter (Reilly) down from the big city, her wrists bandaged from a suicide attempt. We meet most of the locals to find his stalker. A sinful lot for such a small village. The butcher who beats his two-timing wife; the aggressive local publican; the cynical doctor; the alcoholic landowner; the police inspector with a taste for rent-boys; and an exiled American writer. A black comedy.

The Perfect Meze - Safran style

It is hard to know what to say about Safran at Ettalong, so let’s start with, if you haven’t dined there you are missing out on a top shelf dining experience.

Everything works at this dining venue from the seriously stylish interior fit out to the thought that has gone into the way that the alfresco dining areas extend the feeling of contemporary dining out into the courtyard.

The presentation of the menus, signage and the consistency of branding adds to the sense of vision and professionalism that defines this restaurant from others.

This restaurant is owned and operated by husband and wife Sulo and Natalie Kirbancioglu. They established their reputation for high quality food and service with the establishment of cafe 304 on West at Umina. The same high standards are clearly visible at Safran.

Given that Turkish food, has not been common on the Peninsula we asked Natalie to suggest what would be her perfect meze lunch selection. Natalie, a foodie has suggested the following delicious options for you to include in your Turkish feast.

“The perfect meze lunch would be to pick some light fresh dishes. I love the rocket salad, oven dried Roma tomatoes, flaked almonds, goats cheese. We keep our dishes fresh and light doing our best to use the best ingredients available for the season.

A serve of zucchini fritters, garlic and dill yoghurt, micro saladcoupled with some meat meze contrasts from the rocket salad adding protein and broadening the range of flavours.

If you like strong flavours try the filo pastry borek, air dried beef, smoked cheese, char-grilled zucchini and herb oil.

We often serve lamb shanks, wrapped in marinated eggplant, lamb jus or char-grilled lamb kofte, eggplant puree, tomato, strained yoghurt as a popular dish for the men.

Couples enjoy our seafood meze which might include char grilled squid dolma filled with herbed seafood, saffron tomato sauce combined with prawns, wrapped in shredded pastry, orange syrup.”

Safran is a great place to go for a weekend lunch. During our visit there was an irresistible offer of any two mezes and a glass of wine or beer for $28 per person. This is great for couples as they can choose and share four meze plates between them.

Safran are open for weekend lunches from 11.30 am and evening dining from 6pm, Wednesday to Sunday.

Beloved author and poet Judith Viorst on the complexities of old age.

It is tempting to delude ourselves that 80 is the new 60, but it isn’t. There’s no question that I, and many of the 80ish women I know, look dramatically different from the way our mothers looked when they were our age. We pump iron, watch our weight, we no longer smoke. We eschew old-lady-ish clothes and too-done hair-dos. We live energetic lives; we notice who’s a sexy guy; and we have not yet given up on our own sexuality. Younger women — by which I mean those who are 50 or 60 years old — often tell us they find us most inspiring, assuring us that we surely can’t be anywhere near 80, because 80 to them means one foot in the grave.

It’s an age at which we’re attending a lot of funerals. It’s an age at which we get up in the morning achingly and gingerly, and swallow at least ten pills in the course of the day. It’s an age at which our every symptom

strikes us as probably fatal and every trip to the doctor is yet another chance to hear some really bad news.

And “old” means that whatever we accomplish from now on will burnish not our resume but our obituary.

Do I think about death? Every single day. But I’m also thinking, Lady, don’t waste this day.

Is Health Related to Happiness?

We are very excited to announce that we have added Hamish and Bonnie from Plus 24/7 Fitness to our expert team of contributors.

They are opening their gym in early July and have brought together the very best professionals to the business to ensure top rate service and results.

We visited the gym this week to see the vibrant colour scheme and natural lit work-out spaces thoughtfully layed out to separate the clients who are working to different goals.

The winter opening date is perfect for those who over eat with the “Winter Blues” and find that there summer beach bodies are a distant memory by mid Spring.

Is your health related to

your happiness? Sure you have an answer to that question, but how honest is that reply?

Some people can accept their bodies for what they are. A healthy self image can be maintained what ever shape you may be if it really doesn’t bother you.

Most people will agree when they are happy with how the look they feel better in themselves. If that is the case for you it would make sense to do something to move you in the direction that will help make you happy.

Is it time to change something in your diet or when you eat? Maybe it is time to take advantage of the extended Autumn and take some walks along the picturesque foreshore.

Maybe it’s time to bight the bullet and get some professional assistance to get moving.

Meet our Money Man, Bendigo Bank Manager - Peter McKeon

Is your mortgage working hard for you, or are you working hard for your mortgage?

In this electronic and internet age there are a number of ways that you can reduce your interest costs. Ask yourself are you making the best of the facilities available to you to get the most benefit from your mortgage?

The more respected banks, including Bendigo will provide a free internet redraw on your home loan, which can be utilised to save you many thousands of dollars over the life of the loan.

By depositing your salary directly into your home loan you are affectively reducing the balance of your principle, reducing the amount of interest that accrues. As the month goes on you slowly redraw the funds that are required taking advantage of the lowering of the principle and the related saving of interest.

You must however be disciplined to make sure that you leave your monthly mortgage amount in the account by the end of the month so your debit does not grow.

More saving tips are on the way but if you would like to have a chat drop into your Bendigo Community Bank at Ettalong to discuss your financial goals with me personally. We can have an obligation free chat and I’ll even make you a cuppa when you come in. Call 4344 4206

Home Styling Meet our Interior Stylist Suzanne Nash. Suzanne of S for Style and co-owner of Style House Ettalong has the experience and creativity to make any room look great and function perfectly. She offers colour and styling services for builders, real estate and private clients.

Styling with Cushions Cushions are like shoes & handbags; you can never have too many. Interior stylists use cushions in all areas of the home. Cushions are an accessory that transform the look and feel of a room for a very small investment. One or two statement cushions will set the tone. Cushions add colour, texture or pattern to a room, emphasising a theme e.g., Coastal, Country, French provincial, Hampton’s style.

Bring bling to the bedroom - mixing a vibrant colour or heavily beaded cushion with your existing cushions and pillows, transform a room delivering a bold statement.

Cushions Outside - The brighter the better. When you entertain at home you want your guests to be comfortable. Use large floor cushions for outside entertaining, especially cushions in bold colours and patterns. There are a wide range of outdoor fabrics available that are UV resistant, contact your nearest upholsterer to view their samples.

This winter - cushion lovers be daring, add a pop of colour or bold pattern cushion with a fur cushion & throw…. Instant chic!

A new delivery of cushions have just arrived at Style House Ettalong. Hope to see you soon.

How to Protect Your Timber Floors

It is simple to protect your timber floors if you ensure that these steps are undertaken regularly.

1.It is important to keep them swept. Especially if you have little rocks outside that might be tracked in. They scratch the wood.

2.It is also a good idea to keep your floors dusted, not only for your own health and safety (dusty floors are slippery!) but just because the floors present better when they are free of dust. Use washable cloth dust mop covers or disposable dusters. The dust mops with pivoting handles work much better over large areas.

3.Regular dust rags are great for quick hand-dusting of the stairs. It takes just a minute to do the entire stair case and is often easier than lugging the vacuum cleaner up and down a staircase.

4.Be very careful about vacuuming a wood floor because sometimes nozzle head or the vacuum wheels can scratch and damage your floor. It is worth getting a light weight canister style machine that you can carry around and gently use the hose to quickly grab dust and debris from corners.

5.It is very important to make sure that you maintain the finish on your floor to make sure that any spillage can’t be absorbed into the timber flooring which ultimately will lead to re-sanding and coating a much larger area than just the spill mark.

If you ensure that you routinely carry out these simple steps you will save yourself a huge amount of money and you will enjoy living with the natural warm and high end appeal of your timber floors.

When looking to buy always have the property inspected by an experienced and respected inspector. David Hook Coast Wide Property Inspections 4344 3444.

Tips for Selling

Let go emotionally before you list.

When selling it is time to let go. If you can’t unpack yourself from your property, no amount of pretty pictures and nice furniture will help sell it.

Home stylist Barb Schwartz quote “How you live in your home and how you prepare your house to sell are two different things” is at the core of home staging.

Some of my selling clients understand the need to think about the most likely buyer of their property, then present their property to attract that buyer. They are happy to pack away family photos or change the craft room back into a bedroom so that prospective buyers can see themselves living in the house.

But for many, these simple actions are difficult, as they’re still emotionally tied to their home and find it hard to unpack themselves from the property. Emotionally detaching from your house before you list it the first step to getting it sold. Your next property is your new home. Start to transfer your emotional connection.

If you still see your property as your home and not as a product to be packaged, you won’t see what needs to be done, or be willing to make the changes necessary.

Everything will seem harder until you realise that your house is now a property. Your next property is your home.
