June 24: Birth of John the Baptist

John the Baptist plays a key role in the New Testament.

He is the bridge, the Forerunner, the one sent to prepare

the way of the Lord. His holiness turned the hearts of the

Israelites to repentance, thus making them capable of

accepting the coming of the Messiah.

The commemoration of St. John’s Nativity is one of the

older, if not the oldest, feasts in honor of any Saint found in

the Church. Ordinarily the Church observes the day of a

Saint’s death because that day marks his entrance into

heaven. St. John is an exception to this rule because he

was “filled with the Holy Spirit from his mother’s womb.” His

nativity, therefore, is already a day of triumph. Nothing

can be said with certainty as to the date of the birth of St.

John the Baptist. The gospel suggests that he was born

about six months before Christ. (Luke 1:5-25)

St. John the Baptist is represented with two large wings

because he is the messenger of the Messiah. It is about

this man that Scripture says, “I send my messenger ahead

of you to prepare the way before you.” (Mt. 11:10) In the

icon, John makes the gesture of the preacher with his

right hand and holds an open scroll in his left hand which

proclaims the message of his preaching. “Reform your

lives! The reign of God is at hand.” (Mt. 3:2) As a man of

the desert, he is clothed in a camel’s hair garment. The

rocks behind the Forerunner represent the wilderness, and

the strip of water below his feet represents the Jordan River. We also find some bushes and

an axe “laid to the root of the tree.” (Mt. 3:10) alluding to the words of his preaching. In the

lower left hand corner, a cup with the head of St. John recalls that he would end his life in

martyrdom. St. John the Baptist stands before us and calls us to repentance before the

Lord.

Wednesday is a Solemn Holyday. The liturgy will be celebrated at 7:00 p.m. at the St. John Paul II Chapel. After services plan to enjoy some fellowship and cookies/punch courtesy of the Ladies’ Auxiliary.

on the website. Applicants need to submit a

cover letter, resume and references to Father.

The deadline is July 13.

We have a new website

featuring improved

informative experience! The new site is more

easily updated/modified than the old,

enabling the current team (Dennis Sedlak,

Linda Szucs and Michele Wiltshire) to keep

things fresh. We thank the generous donor who

funded this undertaking. Please visit soon and

encourage your friends/family to do the same!

Deacon Kenneth Malley, serving as deacon here since February 1, is being considered for ordination to the presbyterate (priesthood). All the church faithful are to make known to Fr. Bruce Riebe impediments or other reasons why the candidate is not fit for ordination.

The Ladies’ Auxiliary made a donation of $250 to the “Wounded Warrior Project” in honor of our fathers. Thanks to

the Auxiliary for providing the danish/muffins after liturgy today.

The Building Commission will meet on Tuesday at 6:00.

New lector schedules will be coming out by the end of the month. Anyone interested in being part of this ministry should contact Father.

!Father will be training new altar servers in July. Any boy going into fourth grade (thru 12th) is eligible. Please let

Father know if your son is interested (by June 30).

" !# A lot of time slots are still open to staff our “Brecksville Home

God Placed a Trust in Fathers

God placed a trust in fathers for strength to support their family’s needs, to serve them and yet to keep enough sensitivity to support the small and fragile hopes of a little child.

• To guide in gentleness, to love, and to teach with corrective discipline, not with anger but with a calm mind and an active heart.

• To know that not all the pain or scratches in life can be seen from the

outside and to realize that sometimes it is the inner pains a child has that needs the most comfort.

• To set an example of goodness of heart and though a father may hold a

child’s hand with his own calloused fingers, he will know when to hold on firmly and when to reach out gently.

• To care enough to know that love is built in small ways in shared time in the

on-going days. Sharing love and laughter are also elements of his care. • To be so strong that he can be leaned upon and yet wise enough to know

that God awaits to help him with each decision of the mind and will.

God placed a trust in fathers to be strong in love, persistent in forgiveness, consistent in the sharing of all he has with all of those he loves, and to guide his children in walking uprightly before the Lord.

Father’s Day Prayer God our Father,

In your wisdom and love you made all things.

Bless those fathers who have taken upon themselves the

responsibility of parenting.

Bless those who have lost a spouse to death or divorce who

are parenting their children alone.

Strengthen them by your love that they may be the loving,

caring persons they are meant to be.

Grant this through Christ our Lord. Amen
