We invite all parishes, missions, other churches, parish organizations, and Catholic organizations to bring banners identifying themselves, please stay away from the issue of abortion. We oppose Planned Parenthood wholly in there mission. They are a humanist organization which rejects the belief that God has anything to do with salvation.
Hermana Gertrudis Muñoz Mendieta I.C.A.S.

A man came into our office earlier this week wanting assistance for rent. He came without an appointment. We told him that appointments for that day were already scheduled, and that if he wanted assistance it was necessary that he call our helpline. We attempted to give him a slip of paper that had our helpline number plus the information that he needed to leave on the helpline, however he tossed it on our table. Along with a stream of profanities, he yelled “You people only help women!” as he stomped out the door.
We looked apologetically at the person who was waiting for the next appointment — a man who sheepishly shrugged his shoulders as he stroked his beard.
If the desperation of the man seeking help had not been so tragic, the scene would have been comical. In the past we, (and all benevolence agencies that assist the poor) have been accused of helping only women...only Hispanics...only African Americans...only, only, only. And we have heard that we only help a few people, but we help them over and over and over again (and of course, according to those pressing the charges, those people don’t even really need the help….).
By way of explanations: we do not accept walk-in clients at Helping Hands (and again, nor does any other benevolence agency in Midland), because in order to do our jobs properly it is necessary to research and get background information on those coming to us for help. We have found in the past that those people who walk in and demand help right then and there are oftentimes people with something to hide, as though the dramatics of screaming for help might coerce us into giving them what they want just to get them out of the building.
When a person calls our helpline they are asked to leave their social security number. From there we are able to look up that person’s history with past help and help given by other benevolent agencies. We will oftentimes make a phone call to the home to get additional information, and it is not unusual to contact other agencies that have helped that client in the past to get their “take” on the situation. The people with whom we meet are not scheduled randomly and without careful research. We do not look at a person’s heritage, ethnicity, or sex. But we do look at history. If a person has a long history of asking for help, but has done little to improve his or her living situation, we will not schedule an appointment. We look at the need. Legitimate need.
Once we feel that the need is legitimate we will schedule the appointment. The person’s sex and ethnicity matter not at all. What we want to do at Helping Hands is help any person who is willing to make an effort to help themselves. We will bend over backwards to help a person get over a bad time in their life as long as they are willing to take the initiative (provided they are physically and medically able), to try to rise above that hardship and move on with his or her life. Sure, we could just throw the money you give us to the first five or six people who approach us each day, but we will never do so. We feel it is important, as stewards of the money you give to us, to be sure that the assistance is given responsibly. We thank you for entrusting us with the money that you give us to spend in caring for the poor of Midland. Thank you very, very much!
