June 21, 2020 The Twelfth Sunday in Ordinary Time

F irst Reading: Jerimiah 20: 10-13

The prophet Jeremiah was ridiculed and harassed by his contemporaries because of his

unsettling proclamations. In this excerpt from the book attributed to him, Jeremiah bemoans his rejection but he trusts that the Lord will stand by him.

S econd Reading: Romans 5: 12-15

As his letter to the Church in Rome unfolds, the Apostle Paul compares Christ to Adam. Christ’s selfless death offsets the selfishness of Adam.

G ospel: Matthew 10: 26-33

In today’s Gospel reading, Jesus instructs his disciples that they must not fear persecution. Like Jeremiah centuries before, they must instead place their lives in God’s hands.

We invite you to prayerfully reflect on the Readings for the week of June 21

SPEAK IN THE LIGHT

“What I say to you in the darkness, speak in the light; what you hear whispered,

proclaim from the housetops.” (Matthew 10: 26-33)

On this Father’s Day weekend we honor our fathers who, like our mothers, love their children unconditionally and show us how God loves us. We return this week to Matthew’s Gospel and the teaching of our Savior who gives us hope and sends us to bring joy to those in sorrow. Here is a reflection I hope you will enjoy. Tom Moore is a hero in the United Kingdom. In the midst of the coronavirus pandemic, the World War II veteran decided to mark his 100th birthday on April 30 by walking 100 laps in his garden — a total of 1.6 miles. Using his walker, Captain Moore walked 10 laps a day in his garden to raise funds for British hospitals and organizations helping those affected by the virus. Moore hoped his effort would raise maybe 1,000 pounds from his friends — but soon word of his effort went viral and pledges poured in. When he walked his 100th lap on April 17, Moore had raised more than 19 million pounds — $23.7 million. But that’s not the best part of the story. Frank Mills is six years old and lives in Bristol, England. Frank has spina bifida — he was born prematurely with a gap in his spine that prevented his spinal cord from developing properly in the womb. Frank struggles to get around with a walker. When Frank watched Tom Moore walk his 100 laps, Frank wanted to walk with his own walker to raise money for National Health Services’ Charities Together — 10 meters a day, about 33 feet. Frank only started walking with assistance 18 months ago, so 10 meters is a huge challenge for him. So Frank’s mom and dad marked off 33 feet outside their home and Frank started walking. The boy’s initial goal was 99 pounds — the age of Tom Moore — but Frank quickly surpassed that objective. After only five days, Frank had raised more than 90,000 pounds — $110,000. There are no shortage of heroes and saints among us: a 100-year-old father and grandfather, a member of the “greatest generation,” takes to his walker to do what he can to raise money for his country’s severely strained health care service — and his courage and generosity inspires a little boy to take up his walker to do the same. For both Tom and Frank, the good they can realize inspires them to put aside whatever fears and doubts they have about their physical limitations. Too often, we let our fears slowly kill our hope, our enthusiasm, our spirit. We desperately fear and strike out at whatever we don’t understand, at whatever threatens the life we have grown comfortable with, at whatever

challenges our vision of the world that enables us to make some sense of life. Three times in today’s Gospel, Jesus tells his disciples not to be afraid, that we have nothing to fear before God who loves us unreservedly. May Tim and Frank inspire us to embrace Jesus’ words to put aside our own doubts and fears to move forward to proclaim the good news of Easter’s empty tomb. (Connections)

WHAT ARE YOU AFRAID OF?

Matthew displays the intensity and scope of God’s love. Not even a single sparrow will fall without God’s notice. God’s care is precise enough to count the hairs of our head. No detail escapes God’s care. No moment evades God’s love.

Adults: Have I ever doubted God’s love for me? What signs of God’s care can I use to dispel fear?

Children: What makes me afraid? How can I remember that God is always with me?

A Family Perspective: Jesus says, “Do not be afraid” three times in today’s Gospel and reminds us “all concealed secrets will be revealed.” Do not be afraid to acknowledge problems in your family. If they remain “hidden in darkness” they will “destroy body and soul.” Healing, understanding and hope are found only “in the light” of openness. “Do not be afraid.”

Use one of these suggestions or one of your own to respond to God’s word this week.

In the home: Invite each family member to share one thing that they fear. Then join in prayer and claim God’s love.

In the workplace or in school: Identify someone who is undergoing a difficult time. Share your faith that God is present.

In our community: Use reason and faith to dispel false fears which are present in your surroundings.
