Traveling with DementiaFor people with Alzheimer’s and other forms of dementia, travel can be stressful. Being away from afamiliar environment and established routines may result in an increase in disorientation andagitation. However, with careful planning, it is quite possible to travel safely and well with someone inthe early stages of the disease. Someone in the middle stage would present more of a challenge, and travel for someone in the late stage would not be recommended under normal circumstances.

To Travel or Not to Travel?

If the answer is yes to any of the following questions, travel would most likely not be tolerated well:

Are there periods of agitation, aggressive behavior, and significant disorientation even whenin the home environment? Being in unfamiliar surroundings will only make this worse.

Is wandering a concern? If so, wandering may increase in unfamiliar surroundings.

Is there fear of new places and experiences? If so, the new sights, sounds, and peoplecould prove overwhelming.

Helpful Suggestions

Once the decision has been made to proceed with the travel plan, there are a number ofconsiderations and preparations to think about in order to ensure a successful outcome.

If traveling by plane, try to schedule the flight on a low travel day (generally Tuesday–Thursday). As much as possible, avoid traveling during peak travel periods, such as holidayand summer vacation times.

Prior to travel, arrange for airport escort services to and from the gate.

When booking the flight, inform the airline of any special needs you might have and let thesecurity and flight attendants know you are traveling with someone with dementia.

Accompany the person to and from the restroom. Do not leave them alone.

If traveling by car, many of the previous considerations remain the same. In addition, set upa comfortable place in the vehicle conducive to napping and be prepared to stop as often asneeded for comfort and stress reduction.

If staying in a hotel, inform the staff ahead of time of any special needs. Be prepared toshare the room and secure the door to prevent wandering at night. One recommendationwould be a childproof doorknob cover.

Find out about medical facilities at your destinations in case of an emergency.

Be sure to take an adequate supply of medications.

Make sure the person is wearing full identification that is not easily removed and is completewith name, address, destination, and contact numbers. It is recommended that travelcompanions carry a current photograph of the person as well.

Make sure you have enough people to assist you every step of the way.

Stop the spread of germs that can make you and others sick!

You may be asked to put on a facemask to protect others.

If you don’t have a tissue, cough or sneeze into your upper sleeve or elbow, not your hands.

Wash hands often with soap and warm water for 20 seconds. If soap and water are not available, use an alcohol-based hand rub.

Cover your mouth and nose with a tissue when you cough or sneeze.Put your used tissue in the waste basket.

Key Steps to Reducing Hospital Admissions for People Living with Dementia During

COVID-19 Pandemic

Emergency room (ER) visits and hospital admissions can be extremely traumatic forpeople living with dementia. Imagine the lights, sounds, unfamiliar people, sense ofurgency, and not being able to explain how you are feeling or understand why youare there.

Compared with other older adults, older people who are living with dementia have:

●Three times as many hospital admissions

●Four times as many hospital days

●Almost three times as many ER visits

It is crucial to reduce hospital admissions for people living with dementia during theCOVID-19 pandemic. We recommend that communities consider implementing thefollowing key steps to avoid unnecessary hospital admissions for their residents:

●Train staff on how to monitor for a change in status including examining forskin breakdown, increased bathroom visits, signs of pain or increased confusion

●Implement routine environmental sweeps to identify potential fall hazards withinresident rooms. Instruct staff to ensure mobility aids are accessible.

●Educate caregivers on how to be an advocate for residents. For example, ensurethey understand the resident’s cognitive baseline, transfer and ADL status.Provide a list of questions to ask while in the hospital.
