Message from the Business Association

Greetings from the Chairman and the Committee of the Mairangi Bay Business Association. Who would have ever thought that world events over the past couple of months would have so much impact on our country and so many people in our community? At the time of writing this while at Alert Level 2, hopefully, we are now well on the way to getting some sort of normality back into our lives and businesses, albeit slowly in our amazing and vibrant community in Mairangi Bay.

We are excited about having our own Mairangi Bay magazine back as a hard copy issue this month. Our sincere thanks to all our advertisers and contributors who continually support our magazine that allows us to communicate with our community.

Once again, your Business Association is about to launch our annual “Buy Local Campaign” in July.

This fabulous promotion (which has some amazing prizes up for grabs) becomes more poignant than ever to encourage you all, where possible, to support all our amazing

businesses in Mairangi Bay. Your support will help them get back on their feet, post lockdown and provide stability for our community.

Until the next issue, on behalf of the Business Association committee.

Bruce Martin Chairman

The roadworks are almost completed – there will be no dangerous speeding through our village now! – the cafes are back in full swing, schools, clubs and churches are opening their doors, stores are re-stocking and parking is at a premium. The high demand for parking is normally an issue, but in this case, it is a very good sign; people are coming back. We learned a lot during lockdown, especially new ways of doing business such as on-line retail and church services via Zoom and Skype. We should continue to support these initiatives which will be advantageous to all of us.

But there is still a way to go and we shouldn’t take it all for granted. Keep supporting each other and if you are struggling, please reach out for someone to help you, business-wise or mentally.

Auckland Council is consulting on a post-COVID-19 emergency budget so do try and read it and especially be quick to put up your hand and have a say. You are the ones who live and work in this community; you are the ones who know best what we need. Check it out at www.ourauckland.nz

And, as always, flick through this copy of Mairangi Bay Village News and note who your local providers are and start swinging through their doors. Ma mahi, ka ora – work and live, by work we prosper.

Check out our new website: www.mairangibayvillage.co.nz

Work and live, by work we prosper. The ‘new normal’ as a phrase has been overused in the wake of COVID-19 but in Mairangi Bay we’re going to keep using it because our new normal is great. Sure, it was tough, but there is so much to look forward to.

Live your retirement dream in a boutique apartment in Browns Bay, with fewer neighbours, spacious private decks and access to an exclusive indoor pool, spa and gym.

Perfectly Polished is the new boutique nail studio that opened just before the lockdown which meant, of course, that it then had to close, but the staff made the most of the enforced shutdown updating their skills and knowledge through online tutorials. Nearly two months later the studio is open again and the first week back has been a busy one.

Owner Nicole Harvey has been part of the Mairangi Bay community for many years and was previously co-owner of The Polished Studio. “I love the community spirit in Mairangi Bay, people are so friendly and really want to support local business”.

“We offer a wide range of products, from natural nails through to extensions and very cool and stylish

So, what are you waiting for?

Second, until recently, a landlord could terminate a tenancy where the rent was 22 days in arrears. Now it’s the Tenancy Tribunal that will decide if the tenancy will be terminated but the landlord cannot apply for a hearing until the tenant is 61 days in arrears. Then, the delays will result in more debt for the tenant.

Third, it now requires an order from the Tenancy Tribunal to terminate a troublesome tenancy, meaning delays of weeks/months. Meantime the tenant can stop paying rent and continue the bad conduct which was the reason for wanting them out.

Fourth, the penalties on landlords are getting tougher. Merely serving notice before 26thSeptember of a rent increase after that date can result in a fine of up to $6,500.

Obligations on landlords now are such that many are putting their properties into professional management which, of course, increases the landlord costs and therefore rents.

Tenancy Law Changes

The government has used the Covid-19 conditions to impose tenancy law changes until one week after the election when they will probably be entrenched in law if they are re-elected and the changes are not landlord friendly.

Your feedback during the project led to changes in traffic management and the relocation of the temporary bus stop in Sidwell Street to a more well-lit site on Montrose Terrace.

consultation which will provide important context and to give your feedback by 19 June. Local Boards have already had an opportunity to provide initial feedback. We have both heard a lot from people in our community on this issue which we have passed on - that you don’t want to see a drop in service standards. You want to see things being renewed when needed and for our community assets like parks, libraries and leisure centres to continue to operate well. We’ve also heard that you want Local Boards to retain their discretionary budgets (which account for less than 2% of Council’s overall budget). Following public consultation, Local Boards will have another opportunity to provide feedback. Please get in touch with us to share your thoughts – we want to hear from you so that we can truly reflect what our community wants.

It’s 1952 and in Wooster, Ohio, the switchboard operators love nothing more than to eavesdrop on their neighbours conversations and gossip about what they learn. Vivian Dalton is no different and always longs to hear something scandalous. But on the night of December 15th, she wishes she hadn’t. The secret that’s shared by a stranger on the line threatens to rip the rug of Vivian’s life from under her. Vivian might be mortified, but she’s not going to take this lying down. She wants the truth no matter how painful it may be. But one secret tends to lead to another…. This moving, heart -felt and ultimately uplifting novel brilliantly weaves together an irresistible portrayal of a town buzzing with scandal, and an unforgettable story of marriage, motherhood and family.

Thank you to all of our readers who took the time to enter the competition to win a copy of “American Dirt” by Jeanine Cummins courtesy of Malcolm’s Take Note.

Congratulations to Jane Dwen who correctly answered the question “How old is Lydia’s son?” The correct answer was “eight years old”.

For those readers that would like to purchase a copy of the book, it is $34.99 and available at Malcolm’s Take Note, Mairangi Bay, 09 478 5328.

hours to see how tender the meat is. The meat should be almost falling apart., Return to the oven for a further 30 minutes.

While meat is cooking prepare final ingredients; Put onions, sugar and butter into a small saucepan, cover with water and a lid, bring to the boil. Turn down to low and cook until all the water has evaporated and sticky caramelized

syrup remains. Toss onions through the caramelized residue until glossy and put aside.

In a large fry pan add a drizzle of oil. Cook bacon until lightly golden, remove to a plate. Cook mushrooms in the oil from bacon until golden. Set aside.

Cut peeled tamarillo into wedges. Once the beef is tender after 2 hours add tamarillo, onion, bacon and mushrooms. Cover and cook for a further 15-20 minutes or until the meat is tender and ready to eat. Season to taste.

Serve this delicious dish with a simple potato dish such as roast or mashed Agria or Laura potatoes and freshly steamed green vegetables.
