George was an inaugural and integral part of the Mt Pleasant Men’s Shed, and no Community Dinner was complete without him and daughter Leona. His funeral was held at Ridgehaven, as restrictions had been eased slightly, the funeral home was able to accommodate around fifty, whilst due to the wonders of modern technology, livestreamed back to the Men’s Shed, to interstate relatives, and a little house in Western Australia. George’s son Adrian gave a heartfelt account of some of the wonderful times he shared with George, and we could all understand the devastation he, Leona, and the other members of George’s close family were feeling. George was larger than life, and it’s so hard to know that we’ll never see that sly grin again, or hear those dry words. The Shedders are already feeling it – especially as they all have to step up with the cleaning! Murray delivered the eulogy on behalf of the Shedders, and we’ve included it below. (John Mac has also sent us a special article from the Wild West, and you’ll find that on page 2.) My name is Murray Henderson, and I am the President of the Mount Pleasant Men’s Shed. George was a foundation member of this shed. He started at the inaugural meeting with 5 other men in October 2012 where they met in the shed behind the Mount Pleasant Library. They decided that they would meet on a fortnightly basis and this has gone on since then. George became the first treasurer although later decided that this was not his forte – so he passed it on to John Bowd. As a member he was instrumental in raising well over $20,000.00 for the shed through wood collection, delivery and sales, along with Bob Long. His participation in all activities was second to none. The times at the Farmers Market gate are the times that are to be treasured, by me and others. His tales of his travels with Barrie and family brought much laughter. Repairing the most unrepairable vehicles especially Bob Longs’ tractor, and his experiences of driving buses. He participated to a large extent in the construction of and refurbishment of the Rockleigh School and a ramp for the church. He had a major input into the construction of the shed as it stands today -please look at the two books I have brought for your viewing*. He never failed to be involved in and develop new ideas and projects, one of which the 707 train, is on display at Talunga Park. George was the only one who could get in it and get it to drive. He did this by getting under the train, using cameras that gave wrong directions, right would show left and vice versa, but for all that it was a great hit at the Mount Pleasant Street Parade and the Lobethal Pageant. You could count on George at any time. He was quick to get things to a conclusion in meetings, and I always remember him saying, and I quote “Let’s get the F??? on with it.” At the opening of the new shed on the 14th of February 2018 he was made a Life Member, this brought some tears to his eyes. The organisation is managed by a board of industry and stakeholder representatives from across the region.

Interesting fun fact: On average, Australian export wines garner around $6 per litre, whilst wines with the Barossa brand receive on average around $16 per litre, so you can see why they guard their reputation as premium wine producers zealously.

Peter’s poems Diary of an Adopting Dog Chapter 5 - My Pedicure .

There’s a wooden floor in the kitchen, my claws go clickety clack, So it’s hard to get much traction if I need to get out the back. Sometimes there are Magpies out there, trying to steal my food, If I can hit top speed quick enough, I know I can nail ‘em good. But the long claws are a nuisance, If I’m trying to sneak up quiet, The humans think they can cut them, so I guess I might let them try it. And then, of course, I’ve got dewclaws, that never got removed, Though the value of them to a dog like me, has never yet been proved. Still, I’m good at training humans, as anybody can see, So if any dog’s going to train them, I guess it’ll have to be me. I admit, I feel a bit nervous, my claws are black, and quite thick, They’ll need to make sure not to prune too hard, and cut me right to the quick. But alas, the claws are way too long, I can’t delay any more, I’m doing a lot of running about, and my feet are getting quite sore. So it’s outside on the verandah, with clippers shiny and new, And a few special treats to bribe me with, while they work out what to do. It’s cut one claw, then give me my treat, this could take quite a while, There’s sixteen standard, plus dewclaws, so it may be a bit of a trial! But I’m very patient (and hungry), dog treats are not all that filling, So I’ll just keep doing one-for-one, as long as my humans are willing. At last, with no pain or wounds at all, the entire set is done, So I’ll let them reward me with a handful, and go for a sleep in the sun.

Pheew.... Zeus, Wonder Dog and human trainer

Zeus in all his glory – wondering what all the fuss is about – eyeing Peter, a close-up of the offending claws, and looking all regal, sunning himself on his throne!

Chapter 6 – Dancing with Roos

Living in the suburbs wasn’t much fun, In a small yard, with nowhere to run, When I moved to the country, nothing to lose, And that’s when I came to know Kangaroos. There are plenty ‘round here, all new to me, All bouncing around, furry and free, Down by the dam, eating our clover, So I sauntered on down, just looking them over. I got called away, and told not to chase, But soon they moved off, all over the place. Now Boy! I can move, and got quite a bound, But these furry creatures seem to fly off the ground. So despite being called, well – Yelled at in fact, I had no intention of going straight back. This seemed my best chance, nothing to lose, And that’s when I first started, dancing with Roos. I headed one off, as onward I sped, But the damned Kangaroo bounced right over my head. Back in paddock, flat as a tack, I chased the Roo all the way to our back. But just when I had him, cornered and tense, He hunched up his haunches, and hurdled the fence. Now each day when I stand, checking the views, I’m hoping again to go Dancing With Roos.

COVID Funnies Twelve Commandments for Seniors 1 - Talk to yourself. There are times you need expert advice. 2 - “In Style” are the clothes that still fit. 3 - You don't need anger management. You need people to stop pissing you off. 4 - Your people skills are just fine. It's your tolerance for idiots that needs work. 5 - The biggest lie you tell yourself is, “I don't need to write that down. I'll remember it.” 6 - “On time” is when you get there. 7 - Even duct tape can't fix stupid - but it sure does muffle the sound. 8 - It would be wonderful if we could put ourselves in the dryer for ten minutes, then come out wrinkle-free and three sizes smaller? 9 - Lately, you've noticed people your age are so much older than you. 10 - Growing old should have taken longer. 11 - Ageing has slowed you down, but it hasn't shut you up. 12 - You still haven't learned to act your age and hope you never will. And one more: “One for the road” means peeing before you leave the house.

Thanks-Roger&Collette
