2019 SC Synod Assembly Spartanburg Marriott

May 30 - June 1, 2019

About Our Assembly

2019 is the Thirty Second Assembly of the South Carolina Synod – ELCA and the 194th meeting of the

Lutheran Church in South Carolina. The 2019 Assembly will include several items of business for our

consideration, including the election of a Vice

President for Synod Council using the

Ecclesiastical process and the presentation of

Nominations for other various offices and

committees.

At this Assembly we will also look forward to

welcoming our Companions from the Japanese

Evangelical Lutheran Church as our guests. We

plan to share in Worship, Bible Conversations,

Mission Moments, and a Keynote Presentation. We

will sing together at Beer & Hymns. We will work

together at Lunch & Learn when we consider the

upcoming ELCA vote on Ordination as the

entrance Rite for Deacons, and at Dinner when we

will consider the needs of the South Carolina

Synod as we approach the election of a new Bishop

in 2020.

We have two Special Focus times planned for this

Assembly. Friday afternoon everyone will have an opportunity to watch a movie together and join in

discussion about being good neighbors. Saturday morning attendees will be able to attend two

workshops on Resourcing Congregations.

We have a lot to accomplish in the work of our Lord here in the South Carolina Synod, and we truly

enjoy being together to do this. We hope you will join in with us as we seek to join God in the

Neighborhood.

Health Ministry

--Camp and Sports Physicals were done by Dr.Chris McCarthy and volunteers Joanne Kopchik, Judy Drake, Patty Culbreath, and Kitty Hagglund on Monday evening, May 20th at the Church. Many thanks to Dr. Chris for volunteering his time! We had 33 people attend! --Flu Shots may be offered at St. John’s by a local pharmacist on Sundays between services! If we can get enough interest it will be sometime during the months of October or November. The pharmacy would take care of not only giving the injections, but filing insurance or Medicare. We need a rough headcount no later than June 15th so that the pharmacy knows how many vaccines to order. Please contact Judy Drake at 864-237-8167 if you are interested in this. When calling, please specify your age (there is a different vaccine for seniors).

Congratulations St. John’s on a successful Blood Sunday on May 19. We had 26 donors from St. John’s! These donations stay in our community for those who need it. Each pint can be divided into 3 separate components as packed red blood cells, plasma and platelets so each pint can help more than 26 patients. Also a big THANK YOU to all who gave, as well as, the first time teen givers – Hannah Weber, Will Hendley and Nathan Shackelford. Our Church will receive $20.00 a pint from Blood Connections which will go for a good cause.

Women of St. John's

ROYALTY FOR A DAY

The Saint John’s Women of the ELCA invite all women and girls of our

congregation—and their female friends and family—to attend our

upcoming event, ROYALTY FOR A DAY. On Thursday evening, June

20, at 6:30 p.m., we are having “High Tea” in the PLC.

Our Guests of Honor will be the members of the former Circle One. We

also are featuring a “Princess Table” for elementary-school age girls. If

you’re in a mood to dress up, we’d love to see you in your lace and hats or

“fascinators”…but come as you like, we simply hope to see you there.

Tina Nichols is preparing a special English meal for us all. Please register

after either service on June 2 or June 9—only $10 per adult, $5 per

“princess”. As an outreach project, we are collecting toiletries for Greater

Spartanburg Ministries, so please bring an item to share. Come enjoy

shepherd’s pie, scones, a variety of teas, and much more!

Wednesday Prayer Services continue this summer. This will be an opportunity for members to pray for each other every Wednesday from 12:15-1:00pm in the nave. This will run from May 29th – August 28th. Our regular Wednesday schedule will resume on September 4th. During this summer prayer experience there will be soft music playing in the background as participants will take a prayer guide that will help them pray for St. John’s, pray for the needs of others as the Holy Spirit leads, and reflect upon what God is saying to each person. There will be pages dedicated to embracing

A.C.T.S. (Adoration/Praise, Confession, Thanksgiving, Supplication/Intercession). There will also be a sheet containing those members and friends on our church’s prayer list and an opportunity for each participant to lift up prayers for themselves. This will be a self-led prayerful experience and open to everyone. Please make plans to at least try this unique opportunity to deepen your relationship with God. At 11am there will be a Bible Study in the PLC conference room led by Leslie Connor and John Scherberger.

Summer Sunday Fundays begin June 23rd

“Summer Sunday Fundays” for children begins June 23rd. We have a need for leadership on these Sundays. If you feel a call to serve in this way and share with children your interests, hobbies or anything related to your occupation, please contact Erica McCarthy at [email protected] or 541-7897 to arrange for your 1-hour Sunday to do this! It is a lot of fun, and a Bible story is always incorporated into the theme of your choosing. It was well-attended last summer and children have been excited for it to happen again!

FIRST HOLY COMMUNION CELEBRATED

First Holy Communion occurred on Mother’s Day this year during the traditional service with 7 of our St. John’s children and it was an exciting day of celebration! Congratulations Christopher Depra, Carter McCarthy, Hannah McCarthy, Megan Merkel, Emily Merkel, Wyatt Nestlen, and Dylan Park.

Let’s go to the ballgame at Fluor Field on July 5th, 2019 vs. Charleston starting at 7:05 pm. For details, please contact Doug Kurz (256-476-6043) by June 15th if you are interested in going. There is limited space on the bus.

John's will partner with Total Ministries Mobile Food Pantry to provide much needed food to families in our area. WE NEED YOUR HELP!! Please put this date on your calendars. Sign-up sheets will be at various locations around the church as the date approaches. Volunteers are needed to organize, pack, and hand out the food bags. Let's have another successful event and feed a hungry Spartanburg!

Social Ministry is now collecting Education Box Tops for donation to the McCarthy Teszler School so the school can obtain needed supplies. You can place those box tops in the small plastic sandwich bag on the bulletin board on the wall in the Fellowship Hall. Thanks!

BINGO at Mountainview Nursing Home happens at 6:30 p.m. the second Thursday of each month, when 16-20 residents come to play and win prizes, so there is a need for bingo prize items such as body wash, cologne, stretch bracelets, lap blankets, jewelry, large print word search books, just to name a few suggestions. You'll find a complete list of suitable items on the bulletin board near the bingo collection box in the Fellowship Hall. Any church member can come to Mountainview

on a bingo night and join Social Ministry in assisting residents with their bingo buttons and cards. Contact Luann Bryant or Brenda Ellison if you'd like to help.

Backpack Buddies is a ministry with a continuing need for food supplies for weekend meals for school children in need. Check out the list of items you can donate for these children. It is posted on the Social Ministry bulletin board in the Fellowship Hall. The green collection bin for Backpack Buddies is in the hallway near our church office. .
