What is your name, and what are your additional nicknames?
Bailey – My parents are Davis Pilson (PSA Treatment) and Pauline
Pilson (County Finance). I am a Mini Australian Shepherd.
I am sometimes called Boss Dog, Monkey (Not sure about this one
since I am not a monkey), Sugar, Pretty Girl, etc. – And a few things
I probably should not put into words… If you know what I mean!!
How did you come to take over your current owner’s life?
I moved to my new home in Woolwine, Virginia from a farm in
Mount Airy, North Carolina. Look at me - I was so cute who would
not pick me! I even made it to my new home without getting sick!
At first, I didn’t like riding in vehicles. Now when my Daddy says
“let’s go riding,” I’m the first to the car door.
What is the most trouble you have ever been in?
Probably when I was little bitty puppy. I used to climb out of some
sort of cage Mommy and Daddy tried to keep me in all the time.
Not sure why? It didn’t work very well. Back to my story, I found
some newspapers that looked like they needed reading but for
some reason I couldn’t read so I just chewed them up! All I heard
when Mommy got home was, “What a mess!” I thought I did a
good job! One other time I stole Mommy’s Chapstick (I love
Chapstick) and my Daddy tried to take it away from me, so I bit
him. To make a long story short – Daddy and I had what he called a
“Coming to Jesus Meeting,” and I got a little spanking!!

me do every afternoon. After some good ole
loving (hugs & kisses), we play some ball. See

911 Dispatcher April Wright was recently recognized
as the 2018 911 Communications Officer of the Year
by the Martinsville & Henry County Crimestoppers
Program, Inc. April joined the team in 2008. Over
the past 10 years, her hard work, dedication to
serving our citizens and agencies, and overall
positive attitude has excelled her. April currently
works one of our busy day shifts which process on
average 300 incoming calls. In 2017, April processed
8,741 calls, the most of all 911 Center
employees. This is a huge amount of calls for one
dispatcher to process alone, especially considering
the national average is 5,200 annually for a
dispatcher.
April also recently completed 40 hours of Field
Training Officer (FTO) School. She will now assist
our team in training new employees as they work
through the ranks. April is a pleasure to be around
and we are thankful she is a part of our team at the
Martinsville-Henry County 911 Center.
Merle Spencer recently retired from the Public Service Authority after more than 32 years of service to the organization and to the citizens of Henry County. At the PSA Board meeting May 21, Merle received a plaque in recognition of his years of service. After receiving the plaque, Merle spoke of his fondness for the PSA and the co-workers with whom he shared so much time.
“This is not just a place to work, this is my family,” he said. “It was an honor to come to work every day with the people here.”
Pictured in the presentation, from the left, are Gerry Lawicki, Chairman of the PSA Board of Directors; Merle’s granddaughter Anala; Merle Spencer; and Tim Pace, Merle’s department head

Going Beyond
Whitey Coleman and James
Nunn are truck drivers for the
Refuse Department. Here they
are repairing a pump for a
knuckle boom truck. Because
the part was not sent out for
repairs, the cost savings to
their department were close
to $800.00!
On April 28th, Refuse workers collected
more than eighteen 55 gallon drums full of waste at the biannual
Household Hazardous Waste Day
