As we heAd into June, many CYC members will be leaving town for a few weeks, which might have been why the Club was one big party after another in the month of May. Our group raised $10,000 for The Arc Tampa Bay; Todd and Aimee Crosby organized a fabu-lous beach party; the Clearwater Challenge brought out Captain Morgan and his rum; and the guest speaker at the Celebration of Yachting told a harrowing sea story of wind and waves that makes Florida’s hurricanes look like baby puffs. And Memorial Day weekend was rainy – who cares? We still had a great time!

MAy wAs Another fantastic month at the Clearwater Yacht Club! We had many great events and it was great to see so many of you participating in so many ways.

The Yachting Committee hosted the Clearwater Challenge on May 19. We had a great kickoff party the night before and it was a beau-tiful day for sailing. The Celebration of Yachting was well attended on May 24th, thanks to PC Tish Wold who put together an interesting program featuring Neil Harvey, a world-famous sailor, as the keynote speaker. It is important to keep the traditions of yachting alive in our Club and May was a month that proved that Yachting is alive and well at CYC!

Fleet Captain Todd Crosby and Aimee Crosby, with the support of the Entertainment Commit-tee and many members, hosted the Castaway Dayaway sandbar party at Three Rooker Bar. It was great to see many members out on the water and having a great time together on Saturday the 19th. There was a barbeque, music, giant beach pong and a volleyball net on the beach. A great time was had by all, and many of the participants continued the after-party at the Tiki Bar and Pool at CYC.

On the 12th, your Club hosted The Arc Tampa Bay for its clients. There are too many members who contributed their time and donated funds to even begin to recognize every member and spon-sor who contributed. This event is very special to our Club and to the clients of Arc. The attend-ees look forward to coming to CYC for months ahead of time and enjoy the music donated by JR Connection, the burgers donated by Venus Res-taurant, the boat rides provided by Clearwater Marine Aquarium and the T Shirts featuring art from the Arc art contest winner. The kindness and generosity of the membership and the rela-tionship between CYC and Arc is something very special. I was proud to present, along with PC Rowland Milam and GM Tom Brusini, a check to Arc Tampa Bay for $10,000 to support their ongo-ing programs in the community. Thanks to all who contributed and participated!

See you at the Club!

WatersideBy todd CrosbyFleet Captain

MAy 19th wAs the inaugural CYC beach party and raft-up at Three Rooker Island!!

We were blessed with great weather and warm light winds for all to enjoy, and what a great turn-out we had! There were well over 100 people and 20 plus boats. A special thanks to Commodore Collin, First Mate Abbey and Marine Max for helping with coordinating the event and for providing 100 custom designed Castaway T-shirts.

And a big thanks to all in attendance!!! It’s the people that make an event a success!!!

There are just a few maintenance projects still pending, and all our club boats are back from the repair shop and in good working order.

There are no waterside meetings scheduled now. If there are any topics or concerns that need to be discussed with

the group, please let me know and I will schedule a meeting. As always, if you see any needed repairs, maintenance or

safety issues around our docks, please be sure to let Tom, Linda or myself know.

See you around the club!!I can be reached at [email protected] or on my cell

Yachting

APrIL showers brought May flowers, light wind (not good for sailboat races) and end of school-year celebrations.

The Clearwater Challenge, was rescheduled from October to Saturday, May 19, and the “wind gods” were not kind. We knew we’d have a scorcher when Princi-pal Race Officer Margo Currey announced at the start “and they are off like a herd of turtles!” The first leg of the 11-mile course took an hour. Luckily the entire rest of the race didn’t take another hour! CYC members Paul Guidi aboard You Know Who won the spinnaker division, and Dick Crowl, Larry Steele, Curtis Wold and myself, aboard Riva, won the cruising division.

We kicked the Clearwater Challenge weekend off in style! CYC member Jim Hannigan and Coastal Pacific Wine and Spirits sponsored the kick-off party Friday evening, bringing plenty of Captain Morgan, the Morganettes, and goody bags for each of the skip-pers. We were all pleased that so many members came out to join in the party!

To finish off the month, and our race year, we held our annual Celebration of Yachting on Thursday, May 24th. The full dining room was treated to Neil Harvey’s har-rowing tales from the 1979 FASTNET race off the coast of England. Neil is the southeast U.S. and Caribbean rep for Harken, which manufactures sailboat hardware, and he also has an incredible sailing resume. He was a crew member of the 1974 Americas Cup challenge team, the 1979 Yachting World Ocean Racing Championship, plus he sailed in Trans Pacific races and the Sydney to Hobart races from 1976 until 1979 aboard the famous 79-ft. Ki-aloa III. He also skippered the 51-ft. Freres Acadia in the 1979 FASTNET (coming in second to Ted Turner) and another Yachting World Ocean Racing Championship.

Dinner guests asked some good questions, and Neil was more than happy to answer them all. He also chose to do-nate his $100 honorarium to the Never Say Never Foun-dation, which was founded by CYC’s own Brad Kendell for children with limb loss and limb difference.

Following Neil’s talk, PC Ed Proefke awarded coveted race committee yachting shirts to those volunteers who made our 2018 regattas possible (See photos on page 10).

We aren’t abandoning the waters for the summer, but beer can racing will be held only on Saturdays, June 16 and June 30.

See you on the water!!

For 25 yeArs, CYC has given back to the com-munity with a fun day for the intellectually and devel-opmentally challenged citizens of Pinellas County. Kathy and PC Rowland Milam, along with Phyllis and PC Johnny Cardosi and Evelyn and RC Greg Garner were this year’s organizers for The Arc Tampa Bay fun day that included a BBQ, ice cream station, boat rides and dancing.

MAy FoUnd the Cruiser’s busy planning their Annual Long Cruise. The original plan was to cruise across the state through the Okeechobee Waterway and up to St. Augustine. Unfortunately, we discovered some of the Waterway locks were going to be closed for at least two weeks for scheduled maintenance when we’d be traveling through.

We quickly regrouped and planned a different trip staying on the beautiful West Coast of Florida. The 20-day trip includes stops at the Venice Yacht Club, Fort Myers’ St. Charles Yacht Club and Pink Shell Beach Resort, South Seas Plantation in Captiva, Boca Grande Marina (formerly Miller’s Marina) and the Sarasota Yacht Club.

Ten boats were set to leave CYC on May 28th and as you read this, they are eating, drinking and cruising their way south. The group plans to return home on June 16.

A group of cruisers joined the fun at the Three Rooker Beach Party Raft-up, sponsored by CYC and hosted by our fleet captain Todd Crosby. This fun event

is a must-do if offered again next year. The Dinghy Poker run is just around the corner –

July 14. Once again, a group of cruisers will be par-ticipating in this hilarious day full of mischief and shenanigans.

July 19-22 the group will be at the Longboat Key Moorings. August 23 – 26 there will be a trip to the Tampa Yacht Club. This beautiful club has recently completed new docks and is a great stop.

This year’s Commodore’s Cruise will be Sept. 27-30. Everyone is invited to this annual party. We will be at Longboat Key Moorings, but the big party will be hosted by Bird Key Yacht Club. For those who don’t want to travel by boat, there will be a block of rooms reserved at a nearby hotel.

Save the date for the Cruiser’s Annual Fishing Trip, Fish Fry and Potato Races weekend, Oct. 6-7.

If you would like to join us on any of our cruises, make your reservation with me well in advance to make sure you will have a slip. You can reach me at 813-300-4176 or by email at [email protected]. Non-boaters are always welcome to drive and join in the fun!

Join the Cruisers on the second Wednesday of the month at 6:30 p.m. on the Dry Dock to socialize and plan upcoming trips. Most of us head upstairs after-wards for dinner. Everyone is welcome!

the BooK CLUB meets the third Tuesday of every month at 6 p.m. in the Board Room. All members and their guests are welcome to join our stimulating and fun discussions. If you enjoy read-ing; this is the place to be!

Many of us stay for dinner and if you do plan to do so, please make reservations with Virginia at 727-447-6000.

All books are predetermined by the members prior to discussion. Our upcoming meetings will feature the following:

every weeKend in May was covered at CYC, starting with Cinco de Mayo on the 5th followed by another great The Arc of Tampa Bay Fun Day on the 12th and a sump-tuous Mother’s Day Brunch the following day!

The next weekend Fleet Captain Todd Crosby, with help from Commodore Collin and Marine Max held our first CYC beach party at 3 Rooker! Despite dire predictions of a rain-out, over 100 members and friends gathered on the island for fun, food and music! An-other CYC tradition begins! End the month with our Memo-rial Day Cook-out and I’d call that a busy month….

This summer we’re adding outside entertainment each Sunday between Memorial weekend and Labor Day be-ginning after the Club’s Sunday brunch. Come with your family and enjoy our great pool and libations from Gage

while enjoying your own private “island retreat.”

Speaking of island retreats, why go to Hawaii and deal with a volcano…. join us right here at CYC on Saturday, June 9th for our version of Paradise. Chef John will prepare a feast of tantalizing island

It BeGIns…our humid days are upon us.

We continue to finalize the plans for the Club’s short shut-down Sunday, Aug. 19-Monday, Aug. 27. We have arranged with Carlouel Yacht Club to welcome our members for dining during this time. When we get closer I will post their hours of operation.

Be on the look-out for a few new items around your Club. We have custom rugs coming for the lobby, CYC logo soap dispensers and hand towels for the restrooms, a new teak bench for the updated ladies’ restroom in the Dry Dock as well as a towel shelf and hooks for the men’s dry dock shower area.

The nicest new addition is our new menu covers that have been donated by the Gulls. Thanks to our Gulls for this generous donation!

When our summer renovations are complete our Club will look fantastic on all levels. Thank you for your continued support of our wonderful Club!

A whale of a tale – a true one! noBody Loves a sea story more than a sailor, and that’s what a room full of regatta volunteers got during the Celebration of Yachting on May 24. Guest speaker and world-class sailor Neil Harvey had the audience enthralled with stories of 100-foot waves during a race off the coast of England. Check out PC Tish Wold’s Yachting column on page 4 for more details. After Neil scared everybody half to death, PC Ed Proeffke Jr. handed out coveted race shirts to our stalwart regatta volunteers.

FLAG dAy commemorates the official designation of the Stars and Stripes as our national ensign and is celebrated an-nually on the 14th of June. Traditions regarding proper flag etiquette are centuries old among mariners and have always held a special place within the yachting community. Proper display of the flag is not only an important sign of respect for our nation’s foundation of “liberty and justice for all,” but is, as well, an outward sign of a mariner’s adherence to nautical tradition. Such being the case, the month of June is a good opportunity for us to review the basics of that tradition.

The United States Power Squadron offers a fine series of documents covering flag etiquette in general and that which concerns our nation’s flag. I hope the following article from the USPS website will be a helpful tool for celebrating the great traditions of yachting at CYC:

UniTeD STATeS enSiGnThe U.S. national ensign,

sometimes called “50-star” or “Old Glory,” is the proper and preferred flag for all U.S. vessels. Your boat should wear it from

0800 until sunset, and when you enter or leave port dur-ing daylight or at night, weather and rig permitting. While in port, if you leave your boat and will not return before

sunset, lower and stow the national ensign before you go. The national ensign worn by a vessel must be the flag of her registry — not necessarily that of the owner or opera-tor. Generally, the national ensign should be displayed at the peak of the gaff, i.e., the outer end of the spar extend-ing aft from the mast of your boat if your boat has a gaff. If it does not, fly it from the flagstaff at your boat’s stern. If your boat has an overhanging boom or an outboard motor, your flagstaff may be offset from your boat’s centerline.

On a sport fishing boat, where a stern staff might in-terfere with the gear, fly the ensign from a halyard rigged amidships on the after part of the superstructure.

Marconi-rigged sailboats may fly the ensign from the leech of the aftermost sail (or from the back stay), ap-proximately 2/3 the distance up its length. This puts it in about the same position it would occupy if the boat were gaff-rigged. At anchor or made fast, the ensign should be flown from the stern staff of all boats. The U.S. national ensign has a 10:19 hoist/fly ratio.

UniTeD STATeS YACHT enSiGn

The U.S. yacht ensign fea-tures a blue canton (the rectangle at the upper corner nearest the staff) having 13 white stars and a fouled anchor. Originally devised

as a signal to identify documented yachts to relieve them of certain customs formalities, it is now flown on recre-ational boats of all types and sizes instead of the national ensign in domestic waters. However, the preferred flag is the 50-star national ensign, especially since the yacht ensign must never be flown in international or foreign waters since it has no standing as a national ensign.

Gulls TracksBy Lynne shackelford,

Gulls President

whose yoUr dAddy?? Or who is your great-great-great grandfather? Many of us learned about genealogy from Bob Bryan at the Ladies Luncheon in May. Bob is a volunteer with the Pinellas Genealogy So-ciety who entertained us with some great humor but also lots of information on how to track your family. If you are interested in getting started or want more information I suggest you contact the Pinellas Genealogy Society c/o the Largo Public Library, 727-586-7410.

Again, we were pleased to see gentlemen taking ad-vantage of the Gulls programs. Remember!! The Gulls may sponsor the event, but it is open to all club members (male and female) and their guests.

Speaking of luncheons, we award a gift certificate to the winning “Thought for the Day” at each luncheon. We have a fish bowl at every luncheon for you to drop your Thought for the Day in. We do keep unread thoughts from one month to the next. However, you must be present to win. (Sounds like you need to come to all the luncheons, hint, hint).

This month’s winner was Fay Nicholson with the thought, “I opened two gifts this morning. They were “My Eyes.”

As I wrote this article, the Royal Wedding was being dis-

cussed, including predictions on what the flowers will look

like. Floral arranging! When someone brings you a won-derful bouquet, do you know what to do with the flowers? Or are you like me and just stick them in a vase? Come to the next Ladies Luncheon to learn more about that subject:

Wednesday, June 20thSocial hour 11am lunch around 12Our own Phyllis Cardosi will help us with flower arrang-

ing. She has some ideas that sound like we will learn a lot and really have a great time. Make your reservations now. Reservations are important, so we make sure we have enough flowers for everyone to participate.

Wednesday, July 18th will find Gulls and friends play-ing bingo and/or playing in the pool and enjoying a great cookout. Some of the water aerobics ladies will be there to demonstrate their exercises.

August and September will find the Gulls resting up to

get ready for a busy season stating in October. Speaking of next season, most of our programs have been deter-mined. BUT, we need volunteers to make it all come together. Ladies are needed to help with the sign-in table, sell 50/50 tickets or many other small but necessary jobs. Please consider helping so we can keep all these great programs coming.

As the summer approaches and many folks travel there still are a few Gulls in the Nest every Wednesday. We gather between 10:30-11:00 am to socialize and plan and then have lunch in the Main Dining Room around noon. Look forward to seeing you soon.

CYC lost two members in the spring who were strong con-tributors to our Club and both are greatly missed.

H. James Eaton, 91, died on April 4 at home. At the time of his passing, he was still serving as a CYC Trustee, the last of a long line of offices he held at the Club – in fact, only two members have memberships that precede his. Jim grew up in Reading, Pa., and moved to Florida in 1955. He played in a dance band, held a private pilot’s license, served as a commodore in the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary and was an usher for more than 60 years at Anona United Methodist Church. He retired from First National Bank of Clearwater as an EVP and board member. At CYC, Jim served as treasurer, director, FCYC director, rear com-modore, vice commodore and chairman of the Board of

Trustees. His wife Florence prede-ceased him in 2008 after 48 years of marriage.

CYC lost a true friend and mem-ber on March 16 when Earl “Skip” Wallace Moore Jr. died at age 78 of complications from COPD. Skip was a familiar and friendly face -- along with his wife Sharon Nusman Foster -- for many years at CYC. He also served as Fleet Captain and as a member of the Board of Directors for several years.

Born and raised in West Virginia, Skip lived in the Baltimore, Md., and Virginia Beach, Va., areas before mov-ing to Clearwater about 10 years ago.

Skip served in the U.S. Navy, was a licensed electrician and worked in corporate sales for many years. He was a business owner with multiple successful retail locations throughout Virginia.

I AM hAPPy to report that the CYC Board of Direc-tors approved 10 summer memberships, one social and one trial membership in May. May was full of so many social events starting with Cinco de Mayo. Following Cinco de Mayo, Mother’s Day Grand Brunch, Arc Fun Day, Jazz Night, Saturday Half Price Wings at the Tiki Bar, Captain Morgan two-hour free drinks at the Tiki Bar, Memorial Day Cook-out, Bingo and Trivia Nights with free gifts, Friday Night live music, and a Troops Reward Cook-out. With so many events going on at CYC, I encourage all members to come to the club often and bring guests that might want to join. Finally, I want to thank all members who donated to the Arc of Tampa Bay. We collected $10,000 for such a worthy cause. CYC members are the very best!

Thanks and hope to see you at the Club often.

Christian Worms, whose last name is the same as the city in Germany his family may have hailed from, has been with CYC since January 2014! He tends the Grille Bar most evenings, sharing his radiant smile with everyone who walks in. He not only mixes perfect cocktails, he also has a perfect memory for who drinks what! At 6’7”, Christian easily reaches all glasses on our top shelves, plus he can change our lightbulbs without a ladder! An avid hockey player and Bolts fan, Christian is an absolute (Absolut?) ray of sunshine in the Grille most evenings!
