She created Work Reimagined Job Fairs, as well as Lunch & Learns in order to keep seniors in the workforce longer and stop age discrimination. She also created the Vertical Communities Project for keeping seniors at home longer. She’s currently the Project Director for the Toronto Council on Aging’s Age Friendly City project and was recently appointed to the Toronto Seniors’ Forum, the advisory committee on Aging to Mayor John Tory. OurOffice-Before&AfterWhenyougetachance,doclimbuptothe3rdfloortoseeour“new”office.Itcertainlyisn’tlovely-butwe’vedonethebestwithwhatwe’vebeengiven,andhopetodomore.Atleastallourstuffisnowinoneplace,andourfilesareorganizedandwelllabeled.Suchanimprovement.BEFOREAFTER

PreservingourHistoryTheUniversityWomen’sClub(Toronto)membershavebeenentrustedwiththestewardshipofourcollectivehistorydatingbackto1903.Themanagementandcareofourrecords,minutes,awards,photographsandpastnewslettersisourstosafeguardforthebenefitoffuturemembers.Ourmandate,toprovideeducationalopportunitiesforwomen,remainsasrelevantnowasitwasmorethanonehundredyearsago.Sincethemovefromtheoldclubhouseat162StGeorgeStreet,ourbelongingsandourhistoryhavebeenstoredattheFacultyClubonthethirdfloorwhereUWCvolunteershaverecentlybeguntoorganizeallourfilesanddocuments.WehaveasmallspaceallottedtousbytheFacultyClubforthispurpose.Ourhistoryisuniqueandwellworthprotecting.Wehopetokeepthespiritofourfoundingmembersalivewiththecarefulpreservationofourhistoricrecords.-JaneReflectingon29yearsofvaluingandsupportingtheeducationofwomen

IjoinedtheUWCtwenty-nineyearsagoat162St.GeorgeSt.Ithadahome-likeatmosphereinatraditionalsetting.Itwasanopportunity

tobeactiveinstudygroups,listentointerestingspeakersandtakepartinmeaningfulconversation.Therewasthechancetobeoncommittees,takeleadershiproles,anduseone’sskillstoservetheClub.Iwantedtobeassociatedwithlike-mindedwomenwhocelebratededucationforwomen.

Myfavouriteactivitiesaremany.ForthreedecadesIhaveattendedtheEveningBookGroupwhereImadefriendswithacommonloveofreadinganddiscussion.IlikedservingontheGraduatesCommittee,whichlookedaftertheinterioroftheSt.Georgebuilding.Mypassionforinteriordecoratingandarchitecturewereputtogooduse.OntheBoardItookpartinimportantdiscussionsontherunningoftheClub.TheFinanceCommittee,wherethemonetarydecisionsweremade,alsoattractedme.TherewerespecialholidayactivitiesatEaster,Mother’sDayandChristmas.IntheearlieryearstherewasaFallFairwhereeverybodyworkedtogether.BBQsonthedeckinthesummerwerepopular.MostrecentlyItookbridgelessonsandplayedwithsomeformidableplayers.MycareertookplaceatUofTinMississaugawhereItaughtintheDept.ofMathematicsfor29years.MykeyinterestwasCalculusandinthelatteryearsIwasresponsibleforthelargefirstyearcourseinCalculus.IwashonouredwiththeFacultyTeachingAwardin1993-94.Mymemoriesofcolleaguesandstudentsareprecious.OneofthechangesIsawintheClubwasthereductioninthenumberofmembers.Iamdelightedtonotethatourmembershipisincreasingwithvibrant,capablewomenwithmanydegrees.Wecannowfocusoncontinuedlearningandhelpingothers.InthelateryearsatSt.Georgewewereusingmuchofourenergytomaintainourbuilding.Inthefuturewecanlookforwardtoharnessingwomen’senergytocontinuetobeabeaconforwomenwhovalueandsupporttheeducationofwomen.Withtheprivilegeofahighereducationweareequippedtouseitforthegoodofothers.Withregularmeetingsandactivitieswehavetheopportunitytoencourageoneanotherandtomentorthosewhoneedit.Ourmemberswilljoinforthejoyofgivingtheirtimeandtalentsforothers. - Doris Geddes
