The Blessing of

Andrew’s House Jubilee individuals, staff, fam-

ily, friends and parishioners gathered

at the St. John the Baptist Catholic

Church in celebration of the newly

opened Andrew’s House on Sunday,

June 3, 2018. Being the fourth house

provided by the partnership Jubilee

has with the Rosaria Communities it

will serve as new home for three of

Jubilee’s individuals: David Metz, David Mahler, and Michael Ryan Lewis. The

home was originally named St. John The Baptist home, however the home was

eventually renamed Andrew’s House to honor a former Jubilee individual An-

drew Vocke who passed away last year. Cardinal Donald Wuerl, Archbishop of

the Archdiocese of Washington blessed the home with a prayer and the sprinkling

of holy water. Guests then traveled for the

mass at St. John the Baptist where Cardinal

Wuerl led a mass to celebrate God’s protec-

tion of the ministry and partnership that Jubi-

lee and Rosaria have formed. Guests in at-

tendance included Carol Fried, Jubilee Asso-

ciation Board member, and mother of David

Metz; Chess Campbell, grandmother of Da-

vid Mahler; Tom Welch, President of Rosar-

ia Communities; Peg Kolm, current board

member of Rosaria Communities; as well as

a group of Jubilee employees, individuals,

family and friends. This event reflected Jubilee’s three anchors: faith, as we pro-

tect the home of our individuals with a holy blessing; partnership, as this could

not have been possible without the partnership between the Rosaria Communi-

ties and Jubilee Association of Maryland; and innovation, as Jubilee is mov-

ing from the norm of owning group homes and is utilizing the communi-

ty to fulfill their housing needs. Thank you to everyone who made the

blessing of Andrew’s Home a successful event!

On May 23, one of Jubilee’s first individuals and biggest personal-

ities Laura Jean Kuster attended the Maryland Association of Community

Service (MACS) conference in Linthicum Heights, MD and received the

MACS “Achievement Award.” Laura Jean was nominated by Jubilee pro-

gram managers for her work in the government for over 26 years, being

active in her community, and more importantly advocating for the ability

to administer her medications on her own. Her support counselor Rose

Kachuchuru, Tim Wiens, Sakiru Salami, and Nana Anane were present to

support her. Congratulations to Laura Jean, your Jubilee family is proud of

you!

The County Council passed the FY19 Operating Budget in May that included an additional $316,844 to fund the Developmental Disability (DD) Supplement at an amount that will allow providers to pay up to an average of 125 percent of the County’s minimum wage to direct service workers. This is added to the $2,515,579 that the County Executive included in his budget to bring the total fund to $17,562,134. This is a major victory for Inter ACC/DD and our Direct Support Professionals. On July 1, 2018 the County minimum wage will go up to $12 an hour, this means that Jubilee and other similar services providers will be paying, at least, an average of $15 an hour. Please make a point to thank County Executive Isaiah Leggett and the County Council members for supporting this.

On June 6 Director of Program Support Services Tigest Alemu graduated from Leadership

Montgomery’s Emerging Leaders Program. This program is focused on training the Montgomery

County’s leaders of tomorrow. Once per month, for nine months, participants engaged in a blend of

professional development and county exploration to help prepare them as well-rounded future lead-

ers. Participants explore meaningful ways to strengthen their communities and add value to the or-

ganizations they represent, while advancing their professional goals. Touching on topics such as

civic engagements, leadership fundamentals, economic development and more, the program helps

professionals 25 – 35 years old work within the public, private and nonprofit sectors to network and

build skills. Furthermore, the program gives opportunities to be paired with a mentor. Tigest and

her mentor, the former President at MedStar Montgomery Medical Center, Peter Monge, met twice

a month and he helped her with her professional goals and to network with other professionals in healthcare. Tigest also

enjoyed working on a project with a non-profit organization, Hospice Caring, Inc. The organization focuses on non-

clinical support needs of hospice care such as taking care of a pet, picking up groceries, or cleaning for the family.

Tigest is grateful for the networking and skill building opportunity that Leadership Montgomery provided.
