“I was 9-years-old and saw a couple guitarists on local television, thought that was neat, and found myself drawn to it,” said popular island performer Bill Zink. “I’d like to tell you it was from watching The Beatles, but mine is a simple origin!” He came to Southwest Florida 14 years ago, from Rhode Island, “where I was a welder, electrician, then supervisor on nuclear submarines. I did that for 23 years, raising my family, but my wife hated the cold, so we came down and took a leap of faith into music. Within the first month, I had a couple of steady gigs, and it took off from there.” Bill does not have one standard style. “Here you have to play everything, like Country and Island and Rock-&-Roll, but my favorite is surf-guitar, made famous by Duane Eddy and Dick Dale.” Requests range all over the board, “but my favorite is ‘Pipeline’ by Dick Dale. I have my own rendition that is very quick, and in the middle, I throw in some of ‘The Green Hornet.” Check that out on YouTube, from a performance from about 10 years ago, when my hair was darker!” Known as both Bill Zink and Smokin’ Bill, he performs half the time solo, and the rest with daughter Meagan Rose as “Meagan Rose & Papa.” “She has a great voice and plays piano, in an Elton John style, and we work off each other well. We started performing
together in Rhode Island when she was a teenager, and she came down about a year after I did to get into music. Our shows are completely different from my solo stuff, so that keeps everything fresh for me.” To catch him on the beach, Bill is at the Pierside Grill Tuesdays through Thursdays from 1 to 5 p.m. and Sundays 6 to 10 p.m.; and Nervous Nellie’s on Sundays from Noon to 4 p.m. and Tuesdays 6 to 10 p.m. He and Meagan Rose are at Shoeless Joe’s in Fort Myers on Thursdays from 6 to 9 p.m., Key Lime Bistro on Captiva Fridays from 6 to 10 p.m., and The Outrigger Saturdays from 2 to 5 p.m., as well as private performances at country clubs and gated communities, “so that breaks up my schedule and is cool!” To book Bill, see his Website at smokinbill.com or Facebook at smokin-billzink. What make Bill unique is that “I finger-pick guitar, using a thumbpick, like Tommy Emmanuel and Jerry Reed, rather than just strumming away like everyone else.” Bill is known for another interesting aspect – bread! “My hobby is baking breads, like sourdough and bagels, and I pass them out to bartenders and waitresses and audience members and people love it!” For Bill, the best aspect of playing on the beach “is knowing how much people appreciate me, whether they are dancing or sitting back tapping their fingers and toes. Another wonderful part is during season, when snowbirds return, as it becomes a big reunion!”

Cover Photo: Least Terns Spring and summer find many shorebirds nesting on our beaches. In our Cover Photo, Least Terns are seen gather-ing in a grassy area at Lovers Key State Park. Designated as a Threatened Species in Florida, habitat loss is the main threat Least Terns face due to coastal development and increased hu-man traffic on the beach. Rising sea levels and more frequent strong storms that may wash over nests are also a threat. Cover Photo courtesy of Lovers Key State Park.

From fall through spring, right in time for snowbirds and seasonal residents, Lee County Parks & Recreation hosts Fort Myers Beach nature walks, but when tourists depart, so do those walks, so what is a person to do who needs a regular dose of nature? Fortunately, the historic Mound House has you covered, with their “Guided Beach Walk” at Newton Park at 4650 Estero Boulevard every Tuesday, weather permitting, at 9 a.m. While the walk is free and does not require reservations, there is a $3-per-hour parking fee, unless you ride your bike or the trolley to the park. Volunteer Gayle Crabtree-Pergoli led a recent program the Sand Paper attended with roughly 10 adults and children, though Mound House staff takes over for the summer. Even before we hit the beach, Gayle talked about sea oats adjacent to Newton Cottage. “They withstand hurricane-force winds, keeping our sand in place. Now let’s walk to the beach, to see what funky things we find!” The first thing we see are pen shells. “These are bi-valves,” explained Gayle, “with an orange-colored mollusk inside.” We find remnants of a horse conch egg case, that Gayle stated can hold up to 200 eggs. “This is the State shell, but rare to find on our beach. Boring sponges get their name, not because they have dull personalities, but because they cover other shells entirely, then drill multiple holes. Slipper snails look like tiny bedroom slippers that you could slid a small foot inside! When you see a sand dollar, you find what looks like little doves, that are actually parts of what people think of as their mouths; they are not really

doves, but it makes a good story!” She reminded everyone that it is illegal to take live shells from the beach. “Should you find one and want to save its life, please don’t chuck it back into the Gulf, as they are little animals, and smacking around inside their hard shells will kill them; gently take them to the edge of the water and place them back in.” Gayle picked up and discussed whatever she found on the beach that day, and identified what those on the walk saw as well. By the time we finished, each child had a handful of dead shells. The entire program occurred directly in front of Newton Cottage, so despite its title, there was actually little walking! Every “Guided Beach Walk” is different, depending upon what is discovered that morning. Newton Park is the former Seven Seas estate of Jim and Ellie Newton. Jim (1905-1999) became well known through his book, “Uncommon Friends,” detailing his personal relationships with key 20th century figures such as Thomas Edison, Henry Ford, Harvey Firestone, Charles Lindbergh and Dr. Alexis Carrel. The approximately one-hour free “Guided Nature Walk” is offered every Tuesday, weather permitting, at 9 a.m. Meet at the thatched hut and wear sunscreen, appropriate clothing, shoes that can get wet, sunglasses and a hat; for details contact the Fort Myers Beach Cultural Resources Department at 239-765-0865 or see www.moundhouse.org.

Field Guild to Fort Myers Beach:Snowy Plovers
By Rae BurnsEnvironmental & Stormwater TechnicianTown of Fort Myers Beach
Snowy plovers, in my opinion, are some of the cutest shore birds that call Fort Myers Beach home. The snowy plover is a very small shorebird, approximately the size of a sparrow, with short, thin black bill and gray legs. Their body color runs from very light grey-al-most white to grey brown with a white stomach. They also have what is called a necklace of black feathers around their neck that becomes more pronounced in males during breeding season. Typically when they move, they will run forward a few steps, pause, and then run again. When they really want to go fast they will their body down and stretch out their head and neck in a faster version of their go, pause, go fashion of moving. Their diet includes crusta-ceans, insects, mollusks, and marine worms that they pick out of the washed-up material from the tides known as the wrack line. Some-times they will hold one foot forward and shuffle it rapidly over the surface of the sand, like they are trying to startle their prey into moving. Snowy plovers can be found on sandy beaches along coast-al areaof the Americas. Within Florida, one group occurs in the north-west, from Franklin County west, and the other occurs from Pasco to Collier Counties in the southwest. Fort Myers Beach is lucky enough to have Snowy Plovers who live on the island year-round. The best place to see them is at the wrack line during the early morning and early evening. They tend to stay in the southern section of the island, but can be found all over Fort Myers Beach. Nesting occurs on open sandy beaches between the months of February and August. Nests consist of a small depression in the sand, sometimes with bits of shell, and are well camouflaged to avoid detection by predators and humans. Females usually lay three eggs during each nesting attempt, which are tan and speckled to cam-ouflage them in the sand, and will hatch in about four weeks. Both the male and female share responsibility for incubating eggs and rearing chicks. It is a sight to see both parents trying to corral their chicks, who enjoy roaming the beach just a few hours after hatching.
The chicks stay with the parents for 28 to 35 days before they head out on their own. Anytime the chicks are in danger, the par-ents will give a call that tells them to stay put, and the chicks will sit down and stay perfectly still. The parents will also do a broken wing display in order to draw predators away from the babies. They will drag one wing behind them as they walk away from their chicks, trying to get the predator’s attention. Once the predator is far enough away from the nest, the parent will quickly fly back to where the chicks are hiding to give the all clear!

In an island full of living legends, Chester Rogers is a legend’s legend! Chester is a fixture outside “The Surf Club” on Estero Boulevard, for over a decade, sketching the faces of Fort Myers Beach residents, guests and their children. Many may not know, however, that Chester’s portfolio far exceeds his well-known portraits, but you can rectify that by viewing his exhibit at the 3rd floor gallery of the Fort Myers Beach Public Library during the month of June. “Last fall, Library Director Dr. Leroy Hommerding asked if I wanted to do an entire exhibit and booked me for June,” Chester recalled. “People will see illustrations of seascapes and other beach works, like sunsets and shrimping boats I have done over the years.” A Fort Myers native, art is his lifelong interest. “I never took lessons, but remember as a child, my brother and I played with crayons, and rather than drawing on paper, I doodled on the wall. Instead of being mad, Mom put a frame around it!” When his own kids arrived, however, “I gave up art for about 25 years, for a real estate career. But I had major surgery, then a stroke and ended up homeless for two-and-a-half years.” During that time, Chester’s mother became ill and passed away. Chester shows off a few of his wildlife masterpieces!Cont’d pg.16

Library Artist of The Month: Chester Rogers, Cont’d from pg.15“My brother bought me an art pad and supplies, to give me an outlet, and I rediscovered art.” You can find Chester under his shade tree outside “The Surf Club” “any day it does not rain, from 10 a.m. to around 3 or 4 p.m.” As for how he became “The Surf Club’s” resident artist, he credits its original owner, the late Bruce Cermak, who passed away nearly two years ago. “Supposedly in his business sales agreement, he wrote that I come with the deal, and Ron and Diane, the current owners, are super people.” Chester is proud to be the June Library Artist of The Month, “They only display the best of the best on the island, so this is good for my ego! Plus, other artists will evaluate my work, as I always try to move the bar, though you never achieve perfection and all art is subjective.” He anticipates having roughly 35 drawings in the show. To view Chester’s artwork, visit the Fort Myers Beach Library’s 3rd Floor Gallery throughout June. The Library, at 2755 Estero Boulevard, is open Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Saturdays 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., and closed Sundays and holidays. For information, see www.fmb.lib.fl.us or call 239-765-8162; to hire Chester, telephone 239-878-5119. “I spend my days on this island,” Chester reflected, “and people take care of me. They bring me art supplies and clothes and gave me my three-wheel bicycle and moped. They love me and I love them back. Sitting here in the shade, drawing pictures of people and Paradise; what more could an old man want!”Chester Rogers, at his traditional location at “The Surf Club.”

Hurricane Prep 101Get Ready Now
By Gary [email protected]
“No one should be afraid of hurricanes,” said “Hurricane Jim” Bjost-ad, the Emergency Management Program Manager for Lee County Emergency Management. “Not even a potential monster like Irma that struck last September 10. That’s because six days out, we gave a re-liable warning to prepare. If you live in ‘Tornado Alley,’ you may get six minutes; if you are in an earthquake zone, you don’t get six seconds!”Bjostad cautioned that Lee County is the most dangerous area in the nation for hurricane threats, specifically storm surges, “because our Gulf of Mexico coastline is so shallow, making evacuation zones cru-cial, from ‘A’ in the most flood-prone areas to ‘E’ in the least. Statisti-cally, Lee County will incur a 1-in-11 risk of a hit in any given hurricane season. That is higher than Tampa Bay at 1-in-25, but safer than Mi-ami at 1-in-6.” All of Fort Myers Beach and South Fort Myers are in Zone A, the most dangerous and prone to evacuation. When it comes to preparedness, he sums it up in one phrase: “’Respect the wind, fear the surge!’ If we have a significant storm surge, there is no place to run! Evacuating is a tough decision and shelters are not fun, but during Irma we safely housed over 35,000 people and 5,000 pets. Wear short sleeves and pants; bringing your cellphone charger, board games and reading materials; and baby wipes are your best friend!” All Lee Coun-ty shelters accept pets. Whether you stay or evacuate, Bjostad encourages every-one to have a Hurricane Preparedness Kit ready well in advance. “You
need water and non-perishable food-per-person for 3 to 5 days, with additional water for food preparation and sanitation, and as much ice as possible. Have a portable battery-operated radio, flashlights and batteries; at least a 7-day supply of prescriptions and cash! If power is out and you can’t swipe a credit card or access an ATM, nothing beats good old-fashioned money!” Hasten your evacuation by previously assembling the fol-lowing materials in a water-tight, fire-resistant box that becomes your “To-Go Bag.” Bring key personal and financial documents and make an electronic copy you can upload into a secure cloud storage service. Include important medical records and insurance policies, agent con-tact information, and recent home inventory and video of your posses-sions. Relevant documents are birth & marriage certificates, social se-curity card, passports, driver’s license, wills and house deed or lease. Pet owners must keep pets in a carrier if in a shelter, and take their medical records, a recent photograph should you separate, up-to-date identification tags, and adequate water, food, and medication. Keep your vehicle gas tanks full, because when power is out and you have no air conditioning, you can hop in every so often to keep cool! For additional hurricane information, contact Lee County Emergency Management at 239-533-0622, see www.LeeEOC.com, or call the United Way Storm Information Hotline at 211. For hurri-cane preparation specific to Fort Myers Beach, see the upcoming July SAND LIFE.

page 32 SAND LIFE FORTMYERSBEACH.NEWS June 2018
GENERAL COMMENTS: This month the future is guaranteed to happen just the way it unfolds, day-to-day, week-to-week, exactly as written in the twisting, turning cosmos, spinning endlessly in an ever expanding fractal of space and energy. The scope is so vast as to seem meaningless to a bunch of people walking their meat bodies around on a rinky-dink planet in a third-rate solar system. But this month, somehow, we’re going to mud-dle through it together.
GEMINI (May 21 - June 21)Stray, random particulates of your imagination will appear in your pe-ripheral vision, kinda like dust motes floating around in the sunlight. Your mind will stray off onto thoughts of whole civilizations living on each of these dust motes, in which you play the all-seeing God. Real-izing you’re staring at dust motes, and kinda drooling a bit, you snap out of it and take another sip of morning brew. That’s when you’ll notice it’s still dark outside. It may just be one of those days.
CANCER (June 22 - July 22)You must realize by now that none of us speaks English. (I’m talking to the Americans reading this - those of you who are Europeans please sit quietly; this doesn’t apply to you.) My muse and I can get into it a bit over this: Nationalism over what language we speak. Ever look at the etymology of words? Indo-European? Who the hell’s that? Every word, in every language, was invented by one person somewhere on the planet. We need to track each of these people down and put them back in the Tower, and I predict it won’t be you that does it.
LEO (July 23 - Aug. 22) Ever read about how they make hot dogs and sausages? Oh, come on - we all eat them! This actually has nothing to do with your horoscope, but I got hungry and my mind wandered. Sorry. It happens sometimes … actually, a lot. Anyway, sorry. I’ve only got so much space allocated for your future, and it’s just about … VIRGO (Aug. 23 - Sept 22)This is a very auspicious month to use the word auspicious. If you’re in my kind of work - you know, horoscopes - the word auspicious is like a cornucopia of possibilities. You can never go wrong with auspicious. “And I say unto you: This will be a very auspicious month!” So, that’s your horoscope for this month (I’m talking to you. No, the other one. The one who isn’t a Virgo). Go forth and be happy!
LIBRA (Sept 23 - Oct 23)This month expect to see peripheral geometry playing a big role in your day-to-day life. This will become unsettling because-hey-there are no straight lines in this universe! (Sorry flat worlders!) It’s like trying to jam a cube into a sphere, right? But, then again, you’re the great equalizer! So you’ll just turn cubes and spheres into geodesic domes.
SCORPIO (Oct 24 - Nov 21)A good month to stay away from all advertisements. There’s one out there for microsurgery to replace your middle ear with tubular bells. This is reportedly for people with ringing in their ears. It’s supposed to make that sound more enjoyable. Stay away from these ads. You know how spontaneous you get. You didn’t even know you had a prob-lem until they told you! Like those micro-clothes you kept buying, that now out-number your BIC lighters! Stay away from all ads.
SAGITTARIUS (Nov 22 - Dec 21)The original Sagittarius was an insect-like extraterrestrial that, unfortu-nately, has been lost to history. It was because they developed a nasty habit of biting their nails. Since they fought primarily with their nails (or talons, if that makes this clearer) you can understand how this may have dropped them off the predator list and onto the prey list. The rest is history. So, for the sake of the species, stop biting your nails.
CAPRICORN (Dec 22 - Jan 19)Like little mini-muffins, your thoughts will be filled with ideas that are cute and tasty, but ultimately not really filling unless you ingest a whole bunch of them. Of course, after that you’ll be half asleep from the influx of sugary ideas and unfit for normal conversation. You didn’t feel like talking anyway.
AQUARIUS (Jan 20 - Feb 18)I see belly dancers, or belly dancing, in your future. This will be addi-tionally fun if there are two of you. Any configuration will do. For those of you too young to know what that is, just substitute twerking in place of belly dancing. I suddenly feel like Marvin the Robot in Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy. That’s so depressing. Twerking replacing bel-ly dancing. Please stop. No, go ahead. No stop. Avoid twerking this month! Why did I even bring it up? Moving on now.
PISCES (February 19 - March 20) Do not let an errant muse guide you into doing something really crazy this month! You know the one I’m talking about. Yeah, that one. Keep an eye on that one. They’ll probably goad you into having some fun. Or to go listen to some good music. Or just have a good time. Gawd, they’re so insidious! Well, this month try not to be so melodramatic. Go along with them. That’ll show them!
ARIES (March 21 - April 19)I was conferring with a fellow astrogator about the effects of being able to see in 360 degrees, and what that might do to your mindset. Kind of like being in zero-gravity. We had been discussing clear kayaks and the eventual effect on your psyche. I can see you’re thinking about those clear kayaks now, so they may be in your future. If you are going to try it on one of the many beautiful, clear water parks in Florida I re-ally suggest you put in some time in a zero-G chamber before you do. You’ll thank me later … when you finally find solid ground.
TAURUS (April 20 - May 20)Have you ever seen tuna swarm? Me neither. I’m not sure why I brought that up, but when the muse hits you you’ve got to pay at-tention. The muse hit me. Like being slapped in the face with a tuna. And the idea she was trying to impart had something to do with tunas swarming. Only I wasn’t really paying attention, so I ended up with this prediction that could mean just about anything, but for sure watch out for tuna!
Disclaimer: I’m not an astrologer. My knowledge database pre-dates all existing studies made on Earth. Most astrologers believe they’re of this planet. Walking around in meat bodies, staring at the stars, they figured out what they figured out. I laugh at such impudence. Written history, max, goes back 17,000 years. And this planet is how old? 4.54 billion years old (same age as the rest of the solar system). I used an app that I found on FB and tracked my DNA back to those dudes. See what I mean? I predate astrology by a mile of light years. Just kidding! I’m just a piece of meat spouting pseudo-horoscopes.
