“Just when I thought I was out (free of them), they
draw me back in!” Michael Corleone, Godfather III
On May 15, I attended the annual
Holocaust Days of Remembrance
sponsored by the Burbank Human
Relations Committee. It was the second evening
dedicated to the 75th Anniversary of the Warsaw
Ghetto. It was attended by over 100 people. I left
there thinking about how much people cared
about ending racism, anti-Semitism, bigotry and
prejudice.
Unfortunately, my euphoria ended the next afternoon, when I had to testify in Burbank Court against a man who threatened some of our congregants and myself with bodily harm, but more importantly, threatened to burn down our building. For those of you who don’t see this as a hate crime, let me tell you, the felon knew we were Jews or at least members of a religious group when we asked him to leave so we could hold religious services.
My positive feelings are returning, because
although, I have not heard yet, but given the tenor
of the judge and both attorneys, prosecution and
defense, I believe he will be incarcerated in some
facility, either penal or hospital.

But one thing from which I cannot derive any joy! There is a candidate running for the U.S. Senate from
Northern California who is anti-Jewish and by extension Anti-Israel. He believes that we Jews control the
government, the Holocaust never occurred, we Jews made it up, and that America should stop
supporting Israel.
I have never before spoken out against a candidate for election, but the President signed an executive
order this year allowing clergy to express political views.
The name of the candidate is Patrick Little, he is a member of the Republican Party in the Primary
election being held on June 5. He is listed as a Civil Rights Advocate whose party preference is
REPUBLICAN. Now it is true that he was asked to leave the California Republican state convention in
San Diego, but no one in the California Republican leadership has rebuked or repudiated his comments
on Israel, American Jewry or the Holocaust!
Honestly, while overall California has been golden to our people from Levi Strauss to Daniel Pearl to
William Kramer, the citizens of Fallbrook in San Diego County elected Tom Metzger to the United States
House of Representative, in 1980. Thank G-d it was for only 2 years. So please, please, please talk to all
you know who vote no matter where in California they live. Show them this column, forward the two
videos below to them, make sure they vote and then organize groups to act as have our friends at the
BHRC, SPEAK OUT FOR TRUE CIVIL RIGHTS FOR ALL PEOPLES.
These videos clearly show the type of man Patrick Little is:
Patrick Little speaks after getting kicked out of the GOP convention
OR
Vote/Our Guy/ Patrick Little US Senate for California
The time is exceedingly short, as of the writing of this column, Patrick Little has 18% of the vote
according to the polls, but he is tying Diane Feinstein in the Central Valley. Please remember, California
has a 2 top vote getter primary system which means that in November it could be Diane Feinstein verses
Patrick Little. And if through some unimagined result was to have Little win in November, we would be
stuck with this anti-Jewish, anti-Israel, Holocaust denier for 6 years.
The US Senate primary is JUNE 5. There is not much time to stop this violent bigot, who walked out of
the Republican Convention dragging an Israeli flag under his feet and then stomping on it for the
cameras!
We must show him that the Israeli Flag and we are not ones to be stomped on or defamed. Join me as
we rally against those who would finish the Job Norman Lincoln Rockwell, Tom Metzger and Edgar Ray
Killen began!
In Love and in Solidarity,
Rabbi Mark

President’s Message
PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE – June 2018
The internet blew up a couple of weeks ago over what seemed to be a simple recording.
The voice on the recording said a single word over and over. The word was – well that
is where the fuss arose. Some people heard the voice clearly repeat “Laurel.” Some
people heard the voice clearly repeat “Yanni.” The resulting furor was reminiscent of
“the dress” image a few years ago, where some said the dress was black and blue,
while others said it was white and gold.
Without a doubt, it was Laurel. Or Yanni. I heard the former and was surprised when Diane said it was
clearly Yanni. I starting thinking “how could she ever have heard anything else but “Laurel!” I’m sure
she thought there was something wrong with me for not hearing what she heard. We both heard the
same recording, and we both were adamant our interpretation was correct.
Our country is deeply divided. Those who consider themselves progressive cannot understand why
those who consider themselves conservative hold the beliefs they do, and vice versa. This ideological
division is mirrored all over the world. We have become a divided world. One nation or ethnic group or
religion holds views diametrically opposed to some other nation or ethnic group or religion. Our divisions
all too often results in violence or oppression. Perhaps this is the way things have always been, but at
least in the United States, it seems that it wasn’t always this bad. We seem to be unwilling and unable to
see any merit in the other side.
The New York Times posted a “tool” on Facebook to help Yanni people hear Laurel and Laurel people
hear Yanni. It was a simple slide. Starting with slide in the middle, if you moved it one way you would
clearly hear Yanni, move it the other way and you would start to hear Laurel. The tool worked by
boosting or attenuating certain frequencies that made up the voice. I was astonished to hear “Yanni” as I
moved the slide to one end. The interesting thing is that as I moved the slide back to the middle I kept
hearing “Yanni.” I had to keep sliding until “Laurel” finally came back. Returning the slide again to the
middle resulted in a verbal jumble.
It would be wonderful if there was a tool for the divisions in our country and the world. If people on one
side of an argument could just slide over to the other side for a moment, perhaps we would start to see
the merit of the position opposite to our own. Returning to our own position on the other side, it would be
harder to see the other side as absolutely wrong or our side as absolutely right. If we recognize the value
of our opponents’ view and they did the same with ours, we could cooperate and compromise. We could
elevate respect and restore courtesy. We could advance those values where we have common ground.
We wouldn’t be so quick to criticize or dismiss opinions other than our own.
I’m not sure there is such a tool, but if we are to survive as a country or a people, we had better start
working on one.

EDUCATION MATTERS - RSPA President, DAVID GOLDSTEIN
Our Religious School year has come to an end and we hope that all of our students and their families are enjoying their summer vacations. Although the end of the year field trip we had been planning was postponed (maybe next year), our students enjoyed a fun filled final day of Religious School on May 20 which also coincided with the holiday of Shavuot. After a school wide game based on Torah and the holiday our students were treated to ice cream courtesy of our Parents Association and donuts courtesy of Confirmation class teacher Britany Amster. Before concluding for the year we celebrated our annual Teacher Appreciation Day and our teachers and staff were presented with gifts purchased by our Religious School parents in honor of all of their hard work this year. As some of you know, after 6 years in the position, this will be my final year as President of our Religious School Parents Association. It has been an honor to work with all of our great parents and a privilege to watch all of our children learn, grow and develop but it is time for me to turn leadership of our Parents Association over to some of the Religious School parents with children a bit younger than mine are now. I am delighted to announce to you that Cherie Rye will be taking over as President of our Religious School Parents Association for the 2018/19 school year. Many of you know Cherie as she and her family are long time Temple members; Cherie has been an integral part of our Parents Association for many years and is quite familiar with both our Religious School operations and our holiday celebrations; I can think of no one more qualified to take over as President and she is to be especially commended for doing so, despite the fact that her daughter Rebecca’s Bat Mitzvah is just week away (Mazel Tov!) [at the time of this writing]. Should you have questions about our Parents Association Cherie can be reached at:
I wish everyone a healthy, safe and happy summer and I’ll look forward to seeing all of you in the fall.

May has been a very busy month for TBE's littlest learners. Along with celebrating Mother's Day with a special morning of Muffins with Mom, our Lions were rehearsing for TBE's first preschool graduation ceremony. Understanding that change is not always easy, much care and reassurance was given to our Lions as they prepare to leave our preschool and continue on their educational journey. Did you know that in Kindergarten there is a rug to sit on for circle time… just like preschool; and cubbies to put backpacks and lunchboxes in...just like preschool; artwork hanging on the walls and sometimes from the ceiling...just like preschool. Our Lions now know this and so much more! With the practice of some yoga moves and meditation, as well as the introduction of Miss Shy and Mr. Nervous, our Lions were ready to talk about their feelings. We hope you can join us on Thursday, June 7, 5:30 p.m. for TBE's first preschool graduation. The program should last about 35 minutes.

Do You Have a Son and/or Daughter In College?
Temple Beth Emet has started a program to connect with our students
attending a College. We would like to help them to continue their Jewish
way of life and offer them additional support. This way, they will always have
an open line of communication with our Rabbi, should they have questions
or need direction; and we will remind them of their link to Israel and to keep
connected to the Jewish Community. After college, we hope to have them
join our Temple, as an adult.
Please send an e-mail and give me the following information:
The name of the Student;
Class Level;
Address;
Name of the University, and;
If the Student is a member of any organization or club on
campus.
The Temple will send a care-package for each holiday, as a gift to the
Student with a calendar of events at the Temple for each month. The
Student will be invited to all events sponsored by the Temple. We would like
to encourage the Student to return to the Temple as often as they wish; as
the Temple would like to offer itself as a second home and place of Jewish
learning. I look forward hearing from you!

We have a wonderful Jewish Book Club at Temple!
Conducted by Fran Bourne-Johnson.
Where: Blum Hall at Temple Beth Emet of Burbank
When: Tuesday, June 26, 2018 7:00PM to 8:30 PM
What is the book we will read and discuss: The Man in the White Sharkskin Suit: A Jewish Family's Exodus from
Old Cairo to the New World by Lucette Lagnado.
Where to get the book: The book is available on Kindle, Amazon.com or Alibris, as well as local
libraries. Please read the book and be prepared to discuss it.
Cost of Participating: Free!
*Synopsis: Lucette Lagnado's father, Leon, is a successful Egyptian businessman and boulevardier who, dressed in his signature white sharkskin suit, makes deals and trades at Shepherd's Hotel and at the dark bar of the Nile Hilton. After the fall of King Farouk and the rise of the Nasser dictatorship, Leon loses everything and his family is forced to flee, abandoning a life once marked by beauty and luxury to plunge into hardship and poverty, as they take flight for any country that would have them.
A vivid, heartbreaking, and powerful inversion of the American dream, Lucette Lagnado's unforgettable memoir is a sweeping story of family, faith, tradition, tragedy, and triumph set against the stunning backdrop of Cairo, Paris, and New York.
Winner of the Sami Rohr Prize for Jewish Literature and hailed by the New York Times Book Review as a "brilliant,
crushing book" and the New Yorker as a memoir of ruin "told without melodrama by its youngest survivor," The Man in
the White Sharkskin Suit recounts the exile of the author's Jewish Egyptian family from Cairo in 1963 and her father's
heroic and tragic struggle to survive his "riches to rags" trajectory.
The Book Club meets on the 4thTuesday of every month. The group will discuss what the next book will
be at the meeting, as well as the format of the discussion group.
You may contact Fran at [email protected] or call her at (617) 306-3835.
Fran Bourne-Johnson is enthusiastically inviting you to attend. She will warmly welcome the readers and a lively
discussion is expected. The book she is recommending is both exciting and interesting. What a great way to
socialize AND improve your mind! Let’s get together and share a great reading experience.
