New Chess Club hosted at the Lion's O'Connor Hall Robert Monyamane, of Henley, approached the Henley on Klip Lions Club for assistance with a venue for his newly established Chess Club. The idea was born out of the need for the youth of the community to be occupied and to enjoy a constructive activity on Sundays. The Lions Club approved his use of the Lion's O'Connor Hall, free of charge, with alacrity and Mr. Monyamane and friends meet every Sunday

To meet the ever-changing security needs of the Henley community

as effectively as possible, a new partnership has been formed

between Henley Watch and Henley Rangers Reaction. This new partnership is the latest community driven initiative to improve security services to Henley residents by eliminating outside influence and replacing it with a total in-house managed operation. As the largest and longest serving security provider in HOK, Henley Watch has always strived to provide its members and the community with the best possible service built around local knowledge and experience. Since its inception 27 years ago, The Watch has progressed from a simple neighborhood watch to a well-equipped security organisation providing radio linked alarm monitoring with 24/7 armed response to its large member base. Being a non-profit, community financed and managed operation “The Watch” is focused entirely on the well-being of Henley residents and does not answer to anybody other than the community it serves. The formation of Henley Rangers Reaction and the subsequent partnership agreement has enabled Henley Watch to eliminate the one area of its operation that it did not fully control namely professional armed response. For the past three years, The Watch has relied on an outside security company to provide its members with an armed response service but unfortunately, the contracted service provider did not always act in the best interest of HW or its members. A change was needed. Henley Rangers Reaction (HRR) has been formed by an independent Henley businessman and property owner for the sole purpose of providing a Henley dedicated security service to HOK residents by way of a 24/7 mobile armed response as well as on site property guards to anybody requiring such a service. All guards and

New Security Partnership In Henley response personnel are trained, licensed and fully equipped to perform their duties effectively and responsibly. The mobile-armed response crews are contracted to Henley Watch on an exclusive basis and their movements are managed by HW control via the HW radio system. HRR also offers property alarm installation and financing with HW providing the ongoing monitoring of such alarms. By working hand-in-hand with other community driven anti-crime bodies, this new partnership aims to provide the best possible security service to its fellow Henleyites.

Herdenking by die Blokhuis

Organisasies soos die Rapportryers en Voortrekkers het elk reeds 'n u i t g e b r e i d e i n f r a s t r u k t u u r w a t d i e r e ë l v a n gemeenskapsvergaderings en -werkswinkels baie sal vergemaklik.

Councillor’s CornerWomen and girl empowerment and economic development within a country are highly correlated. Treating women and girls equally is not just a moral position or one of the core values of a civilised country, which it is, it is a strategic imperative. That women might have the chance of a healthier and happier life should be reason enough for promoting girls' education. However, there are also important benefits for society as a whole. An educated woman has the skills, information and self-confidence that she needs to be a better parent, worker and citizen. An educated woman is, for example, likely to marry at a later age and have fewer children. If you really want to empower societies, reduce poverty, improve health care, reduce the population explosion, the answer is to educate girls. An inability to afford menstrual products can affect girls' productivity in school. The embarrassment that many girls are made to feel about this normal biological process and periods can be a major disruption to their schooling. No one should have to miss school because of menstruation. According to AfricaCheck there are approximately seven million school-going girls in South Africa. Of these, approximately 1.6 million are on the lowest economic level where putting sufficient food on the table is a challenge. These girls are at risk of missing

25% of their school days because of a lack of sanitary resources. The last time you went to a public rest-room, how much did you pay for the toilet paper you use? For sanitary reasons, we as a society have decided to encourage people to wipe their bottoms. For sexist reasons, we don't afford that same consideration to women and girls who don't want to bleed through their clothes. Sanitary products and menstrual hygiene are basic human necessities and rights, and not luxuries. If condoms are freely available to all, then there is no reason why sanitary products should not also be available. For seven years, the ANC-led government has promised women and girls free sanitary towels but still has not delivered. Minister of Women, Bathabile Dlamini promised school-going girls would soon receive free sanitary towels but they are still waiting. Whilst I applaud and support the recent initiatives from service organisations to collect sanitary pads I have a few concerns. When we give a girl a pack of sanitary towels, it only lasts for a month and they have to be supplied again the next month and the month after. There is also the problem of waste disposal. There are now reusable pads on the market which if managed correctly can last a girl from three to five years - In other words most of her high-school life. They also minimise the problem of waste disposal. An average girl would probably need six to eight of these as they can be washed overnight and dry quickly. At a cost of approximately R40 per pad, a school girl can be protected for three to five years for a total of R240 to R320. Every year on 9 August we celebrate Women's Day, a public holiday that pays homage to the women of our nation. This year the ward committee of Ward 15, Henley on Klip, would like to organise a “Women Walking for Women” event to raise money for this cause; (Men would also be welcome). However, if you would like to get involved before then, please get in touch with me. I have a sample of the re-usable pad to show you.

Henley on Klip Lions Club assiststeenage school girls to attend school.

For two recent functions held at the O'Connor Hall by the Henley on Klip Lions Club, the entrance fee was a packet (or more) of sanitary pads. Many girls in our community are unable to attend school regu-larly due to the lack of money to buy the necessary sanitary protection. The Lions decided to hold a drive to collect the much needed items to assist the girls in not having to stay at home each month. The club also distributed knickers, which had been donated to the club, to the children. The first beneficiaries were learners at the Randvaal Primary School in Daleside where donations were, as seen, cheerfully received. – Roger Skudder

On Wednesday, 6 June 2018, the Midvaal Local Municipality (MLM) and Gauteng provincial office of the South African Human Rights Commission (SAHRC) entered into a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU).

The MOU was signed as a commitment by the municipality to ensure its administrative processes, planning and decision making is guided by the Constitution and aligned to human rights principles. Executive Mayor Cllr Bongani Baloyi signed the agreement on behalf of the municipality, along with the Commission's Gauteng Provincial Manager Buang Jones, (seen here on left) during a meeting at the Mayoral Offices in Meyerton. The meeting included detailing of the nature of the collaboration and the scope of agreement between both parties. “In view of the critical role played by local government as the lead agent in fulfilling some of the rights enshrined in the Constitution, the Commission has deemed it

appropriate to forge institutional links with Midvaal given its track record of service delivery and for having recently received a fourth consecutive clean audit. Moreover, the Auditor General has rated Midvaal Municipality as the best run municipality in Gauteng. This positions the Municipality as an ideal partner for the Commission as good governance is an integral part of the provision of basic services and fully encompasses respect for human rights. Without good governance human rights cannot be advanced in a meaningful manner.” The Midvaal Local Municipality recognises the importance of cooperating with Chapter Nine institutions such as the Commission, which has been mandated with the crucial task of monitoring the implementation of human rights as stipulated in the Constitution, including highlighting and addressing human rights violations and seeking effective redress where necessary
