Join in Bidding Farewell tothe Sherwood’s

On Friday, June 2nd our congregation will bidfarewell to Rabbi Jay and Lisa Sherwood andtheir daughter Ilana as they prepare to leave fortheir new home in Colorado Springs. RabbiSherwood has served our congregation for thepast three years. From July 2014 through June2015 he served as our Director of Education. OnJuly 1, 2015 he began his service as our rabbi.During that period Rabbi Sherwood has endearedhimself to our congregation and community. Hehas led us through celebrations as well assorrowful times. He has been a consummateteacher and has also participated in manyactivities in the wider community. One of the things that Rabbi Sherwood willbest be remembered for are the monthly“Shabbat Alive” celebrations that he created andled. It is therefore most appropriate that theservice at which we bid the Sherwood familyfarewell be a “Shabbat Alive” celebration. Theservice on June 2nd will be preceded by a buffetdinner beginning at 5:30 pm. The menu willfeature “Mediterranean” delicacies. As we honor Rabbi Sherwood we will also bepaying tribute to Lisa Sherwood. She hasbecome an active member of our Sisterhood. Most recently she and Rabbi Sherwood led aweekly group for congregants who had recentlyexperienced bereavement. Come and join in thanking Rabbi Jay and LisaSherwood for their years of service and wishthem well as they prepare to leave for Coloradowhere Rabbi Sherwood will assume the duties ofrabbi of Temple Shalom in Colorado Springs.

Rabbinic Reflections In Ecclesiastes (Kohelet), Chap-ter 3, we read:

purpose under the heavens... a time to plant, and a time to uproot... a time to embrace, anda time to refrain from embracing...a time tokeep, and a time to cast away...and a time ofpeace. If I might add to this classic piece of biblicalliterature, we could say that there is a time to sayhello and a time to say goodbye. After leadingmy final Shabbat Alive service (June 2),davening my last Shabbat morning service (June3), and joining in the School for Jewish Livingend of the year picnic (June 4), it will be time forgoodbyes. As Ecclesiastes teaches, change iscyclical – just as for every planting there is areaping, so for every goodbye, there is a hello. As we say goodbye to each other, we will alsosay hello to the future. I will say hello to my newcongregation in Colorado Springs, Colorado. Ifyou ever find yourselves in the Centennial State, please come visit – my door will always open toyou – and we can say hello again. And you will say hello to both an interim rabbi, and a process of building the future ofCongregation Emanu El. As you enter this timeof potential, I leave you with this advise fromPirkei Avot: "It is not for you to finish the work,(nevertheles) you may not desist from doing it." Iencourage you to say hello to the future ofCongregation Emanu El with your participation. While each of you does not have to do all thework, the process will result in a better future ifall of you participate. And as we say our goodbyes and our hellos, may God bless all of us with the successful workof our hands. And for now, I bid you allgoodbye, with l’hitraot (until we meet again) andshalom (blessings of peace and completeness).

Kol tuv,

Rabbi Jay Sherwood

Cantorial CommentsTransitions ….

Torah teachings, life cyclerituals, holidays and festivalshelp us transition from timesof grief to joy, contemplationto revelation, and intro-spection to celebrationthroughout the year. Ourmusical traditions contributeto that framework byproviding powerful aural and

sensory vibrations that reside deep in our emotionalmemories. We have just finished counting the weeks leadingup to the Festival of Shavuot, once again, ‘receiving’the Ten Commandments, and we have begun thefourth book of the Torah, Bamidbar or Numbers. It isimportant to note that we received the Torah in the‘midbar’ – the desert – not in Eretz Yisrael. Not yet.We are not there yet. We are still wandering and havea-ways to go. So too, at this time, we bid farewell toRabbi Jay Sherwood, who has been our rabbi, teacherand friend over the past three years. We wish RabbiJay, Lisa and Ilana much happiness and success inthe next chapter of their lives in Colorado. You willbe missed. In a few weeks, we will be welcoming our interimrabbi, Darryl Crystal, who will be guiding us thisyear as we take the next steps on our path to greaterdiscovery in learning who we are as a congregationand how we want to proceed. What is important to usand how do we define ourselves with regard to ourMinhagim ha-makom – our customs – our traditions, our children’s education, our liturgical style, ourclergy leaders, etc.? We, like the Israelites, received the Torah. But nowwhat? Rabbi Morris Adler suggests that we live “in adesert age.” The “voice of God does not sound clearand true in such a time.” Confusion over right andwrong, faith and reason prevails. In such a time, itmay feel that God is absent. But it is precisely atsuch times that it is helpful to remember that Godgave the Torah in the desert, not in the lush land ofmilk and honey. In his book, The Voice Still Speaks,Rabbi Adler says “Whatever your particular desert, Isay to you, ‘Listen. Listen, for even there, Godspeaks….” (pp.265-269). Counting is an important part of our tradition – weconcluded the counting of the Omer with Shavuot.Bamidbar begins with census-taking. How importantthis is for us now too – not as a call-up for militaryservice but the creative organizing of a community, recognizing everyone’s individual talents andabilities as well as everyone’s needs and interests. InBamidbar, we count, not just randomly numberingthe people, but as Moses instructs: in a manner thatwill give honor and importance to each person. Aswe work on defining and redefining ourselves as acommunity, we encourage you not only to let yourindividual voices be heard but to keep ‘listening’ forkol d’ma-mah dakah, the “still, small voice orwhisper of God”.

Presidential PerspectivesI don’t know which bestdescribes the last 24 months– The Beatles’ “Long andWinding Road” or theGrateful Dead’s “What aLong, Strange Trip It’sBeen,” although occasionallyAC/DC has crossed my mind.At any rate, the journey

which was my time as president now draws to aclose. Thursday May 18th marked the annual meetingof Congregation Emanu El. The temple Board ofDirectors provided and prepared a picnic for themembers attending and we worked through afairly packed agenda. Here is a quick summary. The proposed slate of officer was unanimouslyelected. The results: President-Greg Weissman,First Vice President-Stuart Sweet, Secreatry-D.Richelle Ghazal, Treasurer-Marvin Reiter,Financial Secretary-Stacy Knox, Immediate PastPresident-Craig Beasley. Owing to a quirk in ourrecent board recruiting there is but one outgoingboard member. Adding to our extant group wehave Julie Strain, Harriet Briant, Steve Becker, and Sheri Maltzman. The only outgoing memberof the Executive Committee is our SecretaryRachael Raynes to whom we offer our thanks forher time and a job well done. This is a strong andexperienced group who will bring continuity toour congregation as we experience our rabbinicaltransition. Our congregation received a wonderful andgenerous gift of $18,000 from our Sisterhood. This group of ladies embodies a truecommitment to our temple and to the cause ofTikkun Olam, repairing the world. As I said atthe meeting, “If I didn’t think it would irritate theVatican, I would call them The Rock upon whichour temple is built.” Todah Rabah Sisterhood! I was happy to present two President’s Awardsfor Exceptional Volunteerism. The first award isto Julie Strain for her unflagging efforts insupport of our congregation in the front office. The second is to Susan Shimoff who has workedtirelessly on many projects, like our SimcahTree, to beautify our temple. Thank you both forthe love you show our congregation. As the year progresses, our temple will join inthe Brit Olam project to heighten our awarenessof local and national social issues and interactwith local faith organizations to strengthenbonds within our city. And on rabbinical transition – the following:June 2nd marks Rabbi Sherwood’s final Shabbatwith us. There will be a dinner at 5:30 PMpreceding services to celebrate his time with us.Contact the office for details. Our incoming

Interim Rabbi, Darryl Crystal, will be visiting inJune ahead of his start date of July 1st to meetwith congregants and get to know the area. Lookfor further details to be announced. And so I relinquish the gavel to my worthysuccessor and wish him good luck and Godspeedon his upcoming journey. Thank you all for theopportunity to serve Congregation Emanu El andvery special thanks to my wife Emily EbertBeasley who bore the slings and arrows of thepast two years with exceptional grace. Onreflection, I think I will go with The GratefulDead on this one and just, “Hang it up and seewhat tomorrow brings.”

Treasurer’sReport

Fellow Congregants,Our annual meeting was heldthis past month. At themeeting, it was reported byme that we are about toconclude the deliberations

over the Budget for the year 2017-2018. It is anticipated that we will be budgeting justunder $600,000 for our income and $599,000 inexpenses. This will be in effect a break-evenyear. WE are depending on our membership toanswer the call for strong financial support as weanticipate extra ordinary expenses due to thetransition from Rabbi Sherwood. The increases will enable us to develop astronger School for Jewish Living program andimprove our outreach to members. We anticipatedeveloping programs that will appeal to allmembers and develop increased involvement inthe Jewish community we serve. Please be a partof this outreach and help us to provide for yourJewish needs for the future. Thank for affording me the opportunity toserve as your Treasurer for this past year.

Warmest regards,

Mental Health AwarenessMay Was Lime Green!

Thank you to all who wore the lime greenribbons last month, encouraging questions andconversation about mental illness. Eachconversation, however short or even if a bituncomfortable, was another step towardlightening the stigma. Hopefully, w e are on ourway to eliminating it. In the not too distantfuture, we will live in a society that acceptsmental illness as it accepts any other illness. We heard a fascinating speaker on the bema atour Shabbat service on May 19th. She gave usinsight after insight into moral injury, aparticularly painful juncture of mental disorderand soul harm, often occurring in war, or duringthe Shoah. And Heidi and Nancy talked to us aboutaspects of mental illness and mental health at theother Erev Shabbat services during May. Some of us walked, ran, or just hung out withNAMI San Bernardino Area, the NationalAlliance on Mental Illness, at their May 21st

event at Loma Linda University BehavioralMedicine Center on Barton Road. We all worried that with the repeal andreplacement of the national Affordable Care Actthat mental health insurance coverage might bethrown out again. Mental healthcare parity hasonly been required since 2013, and strengthenedonly last year. But with each passing year, we see more talkand action in the United States, the UnitedKingdom, and elsewhere that improves mentalhealth. The stigma loosens its grip, and MentalHealth Awareness In Action is shouting:

Each Mind MattersTalk About It – Stop the StigmaNot Every Disability is Visible

Know the Signs – Suicide is PreventablePromote Wellness, Recovery, and R esilience

all year long.Heidi Nimmo & Nancy Sidhu

Congregation Emanu El Adopts Brit Olam: The World We Want Covenant

Congregation Emanu El has joined scores of synagogues around the country in becoming a Brit OlamCovenant congregation. This action was taken at the Annual Meeting of the congregation on May 18thand was adopted unanimously. Brit Olam is an effort of the Religious Action Center of Reform Judaism and has its roots in the workof Reform CA, an effort initiated by dozens of reform synagogues throughout California over the pasttwo years. The document which the leadership of our congregation signed on behalf of the entire congregationis one which commits the staff and leaders of the congregation to respond against hatred and bigotryand to be advocates for dignity and fairness in our community and country. The Brit Olam Covenantsays:

Our country faces a new reality, and the need for tikkun olam, world repair, is enormous. The normalization of bigotedrhetoric has led to increase in hate crimes and hate speech against Muslims, immigrants, low-income people, AfricanAmericans, LGBT people, women, Jews and others. There are proposals to deport immigrants, create a registry of AmericanMuslims, reduce health care coverage to elderly and low-income people, curtail basic safety net programs for those most inneed, increase the scope of mass incarceration, and roll back measures to combat climate change. We don't know which, ifany, of these or similar proposals will move forward, but we know we must be ready to respond to the Torah's call to rodephtzedek - pursue justice - and assert the importance of eternal Jewish values: equality, fairness, and the dignity of everyindividual.

In signing this Brit Olam, we clergy and lay leaders of Congregation Emanu El in Redlands, California commit to form a teamwith at least one clergy member and two lay members that will lead the response against hatred and bigotry, and for dignityand fairness. We commit to lead this team and our congregation or community to:

• Take action in solidarity with vulnerable communities - Muslims, immigrants, low income people, African Americans, LGBTpeople, women, Jews and others• Work to pass key proactive city, county, and state policies that model the world we want to build, in one of these five issueareas: criminal justice reform, health care, immigrant rights, climate change, and religious freedom• Support the statewide and national campaigns of the Religious Action Center (RAC) and the Reform Movement. This meansweighing in on state and national issues and policies; taking up campaign actions when appropriate to our congregation orcommunity; and sharing successes and challenges with other Reform congregations and communities • Build relationships with congregations and organizations of other religious traditions, races, and classes than the majorityof our congregation or community • Create a culture of civic dialogue and discussion in our congregation or community where everyone, no matter the politicalparty or perspective, feels valued and heard

Reform CA, a state-specific project of the Religious Action Center of Reform Judaism, in turn commits to provide ourcongregation or community with: • A variety possible actions and activities so our congregation or community can take up the actions most appropriate for us. • Regular opportunities to receive training, the latest analysis of federal and state politics, and the sharing of successfulcongregational actions. • An online space where Reform clergy and lay members across the state engage in dialogue and share best practices. • Regular email updates with political news and analysis, as well as suggestions for actions.

In keeping with eternal Jewish tradition of lifting up the fallen, healing the sick, and freeing the captive, we agree to theaforesaid and commit to lead our congregation or community in collective acts of love to counter bigotry and the climate ofhate and to advance Jewish values in the public sphere.

This covenant was signed by the leaders of our congregation. The effort to engage fully in this projectis beiung led by Leone Hyman and Nancy Sidhu. They welcome input from any member of thecongregation.

You Can Host an OnegShabbat or Kiddush

The Oneg Shabbat following our Erev Shabbatservices and the Kiddush following our Shabbatmorning services provide wonderful ways toenhance our celebration of Shabbat. Theopportunity to socialize with others is animportant element of our Shabbat observances. Sisterhood has always taken on the responsi-

bility of making surethat there is a lovelyand festive OnegShabbat to follow ErevShabbat services onFriday evenings.Sisterhood invites youto host an OnegShabbat to mark aspecial occasion of joy

such as a birthday or an anniversary. Our kitchenstaff headed by Lorraine Freeman will make surethat all of the foods are beautifully displayed andthat the paper goods and utensils are there.Lorraine and/or one of her staff also take care ofthe cleaning-up after the Oneg Shabbat so thatthe hosts and hostesses can go home. If you want to host an Oneg Shabbat pleasecontact Phyllis Sweet at (909)253-9150 or emailher at [email protected]. She will be able toadvise you on the necessary donation or anyother details you might need.

The Kiddushfollowing ourShabbat mor-ning serviceincludes thesharing ofKiddush wine or

grape juice as well as Shabbat Challah as well asother tasty food. It can be “simple” or“elaborate.” This allows everyone present to joinin reciting the traditional blessings and then toenjoy some more “nourishing” foods. A Kiddushcan be hosted to mark a special occasion such asthe Yahrzeit of a loved. Or, you can host aKiddush just because you want to provide a timefor you and your fellow-congregants to celebrateShabbat together. To host a Shabbat morningKiddush please call the temple office and speakto our administrator Judy Filsinger. You can hosta Kiddush either by bringing the food yourself orby making a donation allowing the temple topurchase the foods on your behalf.

Our Wish ListFrom time to time we publish a “wish list” ofitems that the temple could use. We are nowseeking a donor to enable us to purchase aquality carpet-cleaning machine that can be usedby our maintenance staff to “spot-clean” thecarpets in our sanctuary and Social Hall. Thecost of such a machine is $500.00. If you wish tocontribute this piece of equipment send yourcontribution to the temple and specify that it isfor the carpet-cleaning machine.

Volunteers Needed to HelpCare For

Temple Grounds We have a lovely buildingthat evokes admiration frommany. And, of course, ourbuilding is located on a largeparcel of land. That parcel ofland has numerous areas thatrequire steady attention in

order to keep our “campus” attractive. We arelooking for a group of volunteers who will takeon the responsibility of general upkeep of thegrounds by doing some we and other workregularly. While we have a professionallandscaping service do some of the work weekly, there is a lot of work that needs to be done thatwe can’t afford. That’s why we need a VolunteerGrounds Committee. If you are interested in serving on thiscommittee please contactGreg Weissman, ourincoming temple president at(909)362-2895. The com-mittee will find convenienttimes to meet and worktogether on some of theongoing projects of groundsmaintenance. Doing this will not only be a wayof performing a Mitzvah. It will allow you towork together with other members and get toknow them better and spend time togethershmoozing. It might even be that there will berefreshments for the volunteers when they meetto make sure our grounds are well taken care of. We are also looking for someone to volunteerto be our “Plant Advocate.” This would meancoming to the temple on a somewhat regularbasis and looking at all of the plants, shrubs andtrees to make sure that they ate being properlycared for. If you have some interest andbackground in caring for plants this would be afine volunteer service to provide. If you thinkthat you could serve as our “Plant Advocate”please contact our administrator Judy Filsingerand set up a time to meet with her.
